Hi everyone,
i am 37 years old and i had a LTHR 4 weeks ago, i think i am recovering ok as now using 1 crutch for short distances, but still use 2 when walking long distances. All of a sudden i have developed a pain in the front of my thigh, im due to see my consultant in 2 weeks and i have been doing the exercises ive been given ( not had any physio). i have tried walking unaided which i can do, but i still limp, so stopped that for now, does the thigh pain mean im trying to to too much too quickly?

Hi, Like yourself I had left THR 4 week ago and again like yourself on one crutch most of time and doing relatively well. My pain is in the left bum cheek rather than the thigh. I had my first face to face physio appointment yesterday and got me walking unaided although with a limp but also on the bike for a few minutes. I also have a weird feeling in my thigh and around hip flexor area when I stretch my leg out like muscle or tendon sliding over bone. Anyway he reassured me all this is normal and its a long healing process and will be another 8 week before back to near normal and will still get pain 6 and 12 months later if overdo something after all its a major op. So I would just back off a bit if you get pain. I take it you have uncemented hip with your age? I think that's usually the case with younger patients because they are easier to get out if you need another doing. All the best!!

hello, i assume its uncemented, but i havent seen my surgeon since my admission into hospital and wont see him until my 6 week review appointment, i've not had any physio, just the booklet of exercises i have to follow at home.
i know we all recover in our own time, but ive been told due to my age, i should recover reletively quickly, but i feel i am not, i do walk around my flat without an aid, but im worried limping alot will cause more issues in the future, so i dont want to loose the crutch until my limp goes, i also go out on one crutch as i walk without a limp
on 1.
good luck with your recovery x

I see my surgeon next Wednesday at 4 and half weeks post op because he is on holiday after that so I will let u know any info after that but according to the physio with uncemented there is a bit more muscle and things to heal in there and got to be a little more wary at the beginning as opposed to cemented so sure we will get there in the end. like you say we all heal at our own pace but alot that are flying after a few weeks have either had cemented or got very lucky. Its a long process hang in there even though its frustrating and want to get active again soon.

Hi, I understand your concern. The pain could be from over extending your weight baring limits too soon. Try not moving around unaided as much until you have discussed the pain with your doctor. A little about me, I'm a 26 year THR recipient, I've had 3 revisions in the last 5 years, the last 2 revisions for bone degeneration in my acetabular, which I eventually had to have a "cage" implanted. With this being your first THR, you should take it easy and allow your bones and muscles to heal. Hope this helps, God bless!
