Hip replacement after 8 weeks

I was so excited that I finally was able to cut my toe nails on yesterday’s post. However, I was feeling more pain lasr night. I took the meds and slept on the recliner. I don’t think that I pulled the hip, but I still feethe pain when I get up from sitting. I guess it will subside. Any suggestions?

Well done with the mobility.
All you have done is stretched your muscles and they are complaining. Just rest for a day or so and continue. I also have managed to cut my toe nails unaided and it hurt the same as you.
i had my 6 week check up today and the surgeon put my leg in positions that i thought were not allowed. He said that the time had passed for being pampered and I now had to take some pain and needed to exercise my muscles. He gave me a set of exercises that look like something out of the Spanish Inquisition.
If we want a good and healthy recovery, we have to exercise our muscles and stretch them back into shape. It will hurt but it wont last.
At least you don't have a wife who has nearly 40 years of nursing experience and takes the side of the surgeon. No sympathy at all.
Don't worry, it's only temporary and will pass.

I am only just now setting up insurance in the US to go forward with surgery. I think my selection for surgeon is pretty solid after researching him extensively so I can't provide any suggestions based on experience but you situation brings up a question I've had for awhile after reading this forum for several months and that is: with the 90 degree restriction how are people supposed to stretch their glute muscles? The exercises I know all requiring either crossing the foot over the knee or pulling the knee to the chest. With the restrictions it would seem to me those important muscles aren't allowed to get stretched properly for healing to occur. I'd like t know what exercises you've been doing and if Tony the other responder checks back in here might share the exercises he is doing now [under orders from his doctor and wife/nurse]. Cutting my toenails is a painful ordeal I've worked out a few tricks to accomplish but either way it sure stretches the glutes out and I could see where that would cause some next day discomfort especially if they have been stiff and unstretched for a long time. Hope you continue to improve and regain mobility/freedom from pain.
Best,
Jim

Jim-
I went for my 8 week checkup with my surgeon. Tells me that the pillows or towel between my legs are not needed. Further, I may bend down, further, as long as I feel comfortable. I have been doing basic exercises such as moving my bad leg sideways, up and down, standing on my toes- all for about 10 repetitions. Still a little painful, now and then, but from what I've read on the posts, it's to be expected. Time will heal all wounds. I've got to stop feeling that I want the pain to stop YESTERDAY!!!!!!!! Hope you are feeling better, soon!

Perhaps it is simply because you stretched your muscles more than they were used to. A nice hot bath and take it a bit easier for a day or so.
Cheers, Richard

Hi Richard,
I see that the stretching of my muscles seems to be the trend in answers to me. That's a relief!!!

Steve

Steven, I'm now at 11 weeks and I am finding that my operated hip gets better and better. But there is still some stiffness in there that needs to be worked out. I think that it is just a matter of time.

I understand where you are coming from, I too could not cut my toenails for a long time and I hate long toenails. I went for a pedicure and even though I now (5 months post-op) am able to reach my toes I keep going back for the pedicure. Try it, it is absolutely delicious and so so relaxing, very good therapy for our tired bodies.
