Hip replacement after surgery for hip dysplasia

Hi - I am 37 years old and found out recently that I will need to have my right hip replaced. It looks like the timeline on my previous surgery for hip dysplasia has almost run out. Right now I'm just waiting for the pain to get intolerable, before having the surgery. I'm not taking the news very well, but wondered if anyone has gone through the same or similar?

I had surgery for dysplasia when I was 7...right one as well. I'm 47 now...and had my replacement done about 15 weeks ago. I had issues over time but it got really bad the last couple of years. At that point, I had a consult for surgery. It's been a slightly rough recovery due to scar tissue from the old surgery, but, man...I'm really starting to see the light.
If you can get it done before the pain starts, that would be fantastic! The bone on bone pain is no joke.
Good luck with everything. Sending good hip vibes to you!

That’s so great to hear that things are working out for you!
My surgery was only 13 yrs ago, so I was expecting/ hoping to get a few more years out of it (at least another ten). The pain has definitely started, but is more intermittent now rather than constant, so I’m not sure how long to wait before trying to schedule the surgery. It can vary from no pain to intolerable depending on activity, which doesn’t seem consistent, making it difficult to alter activity to suit. I’m doing physiotherapy to try and strengthen, and I guess will just continue with that and prepare for the right time.
I’ll be prepared for the possibility of added recovery time for scar tissue issues - thanks for the tip!
I wish you all the best in your continued recovery

Hello
I'm 43
I've just had my right hip replaced up until 18 mths ago I was still playing football running no problems except slight pain in my hip
Since the I have continued with swimming boxing running with my children until January this year
Then bang pain started to increase nearly every day
I'm a window cleaner so to be able to work all sport exercise stopped
After physio chiropractor over last 3 years telling me im on the mend playing football by the end of the year i was told
I only found out my hips needed replacing in January
My right hip first then my left
I've always been and my children a outdoor family
I was absolutely gutted ??
But after sitting down wiping away my tears realizing there's alot of people who are worse off than me talking to people looking on the internet
at a younger age most people with slight adjustment to there life get back to normal and free of pain 😁😁
I will be able to get my life back with my family my children
When I came round after my op it felt like all my pain had gone 😁😁 walking on crutches 3 hrs after op not very far mind
home the next day wife and children drove 30 miles to see me and I went back with them lol amazing
Then the realisation sets in plenty of pain killers make sure you take all you need to keep the pain away this will allow you do your physio comfortably
Sleeping is a nightmare can't get comfortable 😮
14 days since op I'm out for 10 - 15 min walks on crutches with wife kids and dog morning and evening
Make sure you elevate your leg and try and have a sleep during the day plenty of ice on leg I find this helps
Good days and bad
but just to realise I'm not I'll I'm mended well the right side is lol I'm just regaining my life amazing
Your body starts to adjust and you live with the pain I will be able to do more once I'm fully recovered than before the op
Exercise make sure your as fit as you can be when you go for op get all your leg muscles both legs exercised as much as possible
This will help with a faster recovery
There will be ups and downs don't ever give up we have one life live it pain free
see the positives keep smiling
I hope this helps and makes sense I've been awake for a good few hrs lol
Kids will be getting up soon
Good luck 😁😁😁

Thanks for all the tips andylk! I am definitely trying to get back into shape before committing to surgery (tough with the added pain, but trying). I was 24 and very active when I had my first surgery and recovered quickly. Two babies in less that 18months, however, has not helped in the ‘fit’ department.
I know all about pain management from the first surgery, then two cesarean births and a galbladder removal within the last 4 years, but it’s always a good reminder to stay on top of it (I try to be tough sometimes and end up paying for it).
Can I ask how old your kids are? I would say that’s my biggest concern right now, is how do I take care of a 3 & 4 yo while recovering from a major surgery like this one. We also just bought a cottage so have plans for lots of hiking and kayaking, skating and tobogganing and I’m selfish and don’t want to miss out on any of it so depending on how long I can hold out, would it be better to wait until they’re a little older and dont need mama so much - just a few of the things constantly running through my brain.
I am doing my best in trying to be positive and look on the bright side, but my kids are the kicker and trying to make the best decision for them is tough.
All the best in your recovery and hope you get some sleep soon! I already have a tough time sleeping, so not looking forward to that again!

Hello
My children are 7 year old little girl and 8 year old boy
For me I would have had operation 3yrs ago if i could
I think as long as all goes ok after about 2-3 weeks you can start to do abit more
If you can get help it would be beneficial At least for 3-4 weeks as
you need to rest alot which would be nearly impossible with your little ones for few weeks.
For me as the pain increased I was missing out because with the lack of sleep and discomfort I was unable to join in so much as I was completely worn out all the time.
Having the op now me and the wife just missed family holiday with kids
they have been away with my parents they had fun 😁
In some ways it was better as the first week home from hospital only me and wife have been at home
Children do alot more as they get into school and that little bit older
For me in your situation I would take the missing out now for 2-3mths possibly up to 6 mths to fully recover
I've spent last 8mths only being able to watch my children as I couldnt join in
You could spend years unable to join in
Things have been going down hill with my hip for a few years
What I used to do even 10mths ago as been impossible the last 8 mths 18mths realistically I've not been myself unable to even kick a football
I havent been able to kick a ball with kids since they were 5-6
I would get it done don't have it hanging around and always on the back of your mind and get your life back with your family
It as taken 3 and half years for me
3 years to even get diagnosed
I'm starting to feel different now not as tired stressed teasy
Things that have been building and I didn't even realise
I'm looking forward to running and having fun with my children as I couldn't do before 😁
Good luck in what ever choice you make
All the best thanks Andy

Hi. I'm 37 and had a mini hip replacement in December 2017. Previous to have it done I had a hip aroscopy on Feb 2017 which made my hip 10 times worse. I was on crutches for a year previous to having it done and on morphine and every kind of pain killer and anti inflammatory going. My hip started to go in 2015. Because I was on crutches for a year before having it done as I couldn't walk on it and it kept giving way I lost most of the muscle in my leg. Couldn't drive for a year. I decided to have a mini hip as being younger it gives me more leg to drill into when I need another one therefore preserving the bone. I had the operation was up within a few hours and home the next morning. Sleeping was very hard. Make sure you buy lots of big pillows. A maternity one is good. The v shaped ones. Keep on top of painkillers even if you don't think you need them as better to keep on top than try and get it back under control. Keep putting ice packs on to take swelling down for at least a week and keep me up. Do al the exercises they tell you too as much as you can and try to keep mobile. My recovery took a little longer as I was so immobile before. But 6 months later I am back at work with avengance which is cleaning so very physical. Driving again. Out playing with the kids. And the best bit of all is I am no longer in any pain. And I can lead a normal life with my kids after 3 years. I am so glad I had it done I just wish they had done it sooner instead of making me wait. All that pain is a distant memory and I have my life back. Good luck. Do everything they say. Keep on top of pain relief. Ice. Elevate and exercise and I'm sure you will be fine. If I had the choice I would have had my done much sooner before all the pain and inmobility set in. It's awful. Xxx
