Hip Replacement alternatives

Posted , 21 users are following.

I was due for a hip replacement at the end of January but.....yes, Black Alert and not likely to get a date until later in the year.  The alternative could be a 'deep' injection of Cortisone into the joint.  Has anyone had experience of this please and did it last very long?  I booked a long-haul flight in October which, you would have thought, would be plenty of time to allow the 6 month period when you should not fly long-haul.  I also have my 40th W.A in August so what can I do?

Iv never been offered anything but surgeries haha. Iv never even heard of these injections. What are they for?

It's for short-term pain relief injected directly into the joint whilst waiting for surgery.

Technically speaking i dont even have a joint so not sure that would work for me haha

I had this in December and it was incredible, quick, easy and instant pain relief and NO limping at all..... The downside... It lasted 3 weeks then i was back to normal. I'm now booked in for my THR on the 11th March.

The 'no fly' rules for long haul flights are very variable. Because I had surgery in Europe but live in the Caribbean the flight thing was a big deal for me. My surgeon said it was no problem as long as I wore compression stockings and took blood thinners and made sure to move about the cabin every hour.

I wondered about compression stockings too.  I would normally walk about the cabin too.  Thanks.

Yes, the advice does appear to vary considerably. But as I understand it, the flight restrictions are due to the concern of DVT and not to do with the surgery.

I read elsewhere about someone flying to Washington State to have her op and flew back to Alaska upon discharge from the hospital.

Yes, I know it's to do with DVT.  Scary stuff if you ignore the advice I guess. I am overweight too so that's another risk.

PS had a cortisone shot - had no effect for me. But I think it's one of those things you have to try and see if it helps

Hi, I was given a cortisone injection in my hip last May but in my case it didn't make the slightest bit of difference so for me it was a complete waste of money. However having had my op to replace both hips 3 weeks ago it was discovered that one of my joints had completely calcified and had also affected the surrounding tissue and the other was just bone on bone so the injection wouldnt have helped in any case. I guess therefore it all depends how bad your joints are and whether there is still a sufficient gap between the ball and socket for the cortisone to be injected.

Out of interest if your op was due in January why wil you have to wait until the end of the year?

Simply because I was taking into consideration the fact that there needed to be 6 months between the op and a long-haul flight.  I thought that would be plenty of time to recover and allow this guidleline about flying long distances.  It sounds like you have been through a very painful time!
