Posted , 4 users are following.

Hi all im 26 now and had a both my hips completely replaced ,both hips had completely eroded due to chronic rhuematoid arthritis (diagnosed at 9yrs). I was told they last 10 to 20 years. But i was told youth can be on my side. But also been told as i would be more active they would wear quicker, has anyone else had the op young and how long did they last im starting to feel that all too familiar hip pain so am anxious.

Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Stacey.

Obviously I don't know which type you had fitted but the latest ones are lasting 30 to 40 years.

That is kind of good news I guess for you because your next hip will last a long time.

Just need to find out if this one has worn out. I suggest a trip to GP and an x-ray would be the best course of action.

Just read your post. You should push for an x-ray as it will give uptodate information about your condition. So important.

      Good luck with your treatment

Hi well i have my specialist at the end of the month so will get to know more then unfortunatley they rarely xray which is why i ended up getting new hips so young they waited so long that it was the only option.

Fortunatley due to steroids i had stopped growing age 10 so was able to get the op.

The op let me walk again so am very greatful i just couldnt bare going into my wheelchair full time again sad

Im just curious most about the everyday things like getting dressed, toilet, showering and so on mainly.

      Hi sarah

You may get a shower sitting on a seat at first. Then stand in shower on crutches, which is tricky so you need someone to hand you shampoo etc and watch in case you fall.

Getting dressed is slow at first, you sit on the bed and wriggle your trousers on, then use a soxon gadget to help with socks.

Toilet seat is a raised one on top so you don't have far to bend

      Anything else?

Do the hospital provide you with these pieces of equipment? And do you have much information about your scar? How big is it? Was it stitched? Just this new scar will be on the same hip as my other two large scars thats all hahaha

      Hi sarah

Yes the  hospital will give you all the gadget you need and a few more as well. The grabber is good because you can't bend to pick up all the things you drop.

My scar was bigger this time because he had to take out a broken screw from a previous op so I had 46 staples but yours will be much smaller than that so don't worry.

They use staples which are very easy to take out, a bit like plucking your eyebrows.

Surgeon used same scar as the two previous ops I had so you can't really tell I have had it done again. My scar is mostly on my buttock but also down my thigh. Scars do fade as you probably know already.

Hahaha well i dont think my two svars look particullarly faded but i dont knoa if thats just because i know they are there. Its reassuring to know that i will recieve all the equipment from the hospital. Did you get your op done in the UK?

      hi sarah

Yes I am in the UK

Reading your post reminds me that you are worried about the scar. I used Bio Oil which is fairly expensive but very effective.

I rubbed it in twice a day and it relieved the dryness around the scar.

      Worth the money

      Take care

Im more interested to how thwy are going to look and where the new one will be placed. Im considering getting a tattoo inbetween both once fully healed but thats jyst an option, although i may not and just embrace the new scar as it will be a symbol of how my life csn now begin properly
