Hip replacement booked for 19th Dec

hi,

I was born with dislocated hip. literally I was born on the left side with the ball only no socket but through my life never stopped me doing anything, but always had a limp. As I have got older the hip is riddled with arthritis but causes me no issues, but its taken its toll on my right hand side and I've been struggling since 2o17 with pain in the right hip and gradually got worse to the point struggle to walk, cannot bend down, cannot fasten shoes and crawl upstairs. I'm therefore having hip operation where I've been told I will be awake and feel tugging etc to which does not phase me, what phases me is do you have catheters fitted? I don't do dresses or skirts and it says to take this type of clothing for recovery. I'm hoping other females on here can put my mind as rest regarding this and how long before you can wash your hair etc . I'm on gabapentin 300g x 3 times a day, along with ketaprofen at night and 10mg of morphine twice a day to help me function and control pain. I am looking to eventually be pain free and feel like a person again and not a hindrance to others. I just a little disappointed that the hip born with doesnt need operating on yet as no pain from it so will still after the op have a limp as my left leg is 4cms shorted than mine right and apparently cannot lengthen the leg even slightly. sorry rattling on here.

on another note been very informative being able to listen to everyones stories on here 😃

    hi

operation went well. had spinal and was awake hearing them talking drilling etc but could not feel pulling or anything.

didn't loose much blood they said.

having to use bed pan which is undignified so looking forward to seeing physio around 8-9 this morning and going to the toilet-:)

Had antibiotics over night and woke me up few times taking my blood pressure.

I'm at wrightington hospital and they have already issued me at home with the sick aid, chair and toilet surround and perching stool so all set their. its just me now that feels need to get moving as coming onto ward 5.30 dont want to get too stiff...

brill about driving after 4 wks and both making remarkable recoveries in my eyes with what I'm reading. only thing for me is I will still limp so crutch wont really make a difference round house but will be just that extra support I suppose.

waiting now for breakfast .. spk lata

so physio been and I got myself out of bed. and walked 6 steps before I got light headed down to low blood pressure and they put me in a chair.

the physio then came back me me 1hr later and said I know you want to do more walking so lets try again.. I walked round room with no issues and feel fine . just a like tightening of the bum. this is all on crutches. says advises crutches for 6 wks .

      said very determined lady... lol

physio came back to me within the hr and hot me up again as knew I wanted to and we walked round the room and back to the chair. just felt a like my bum/side very tight.

breakfast I played safe and chose toast lol!

you have both been great supports...

toast is always the good option haha … eat clean and healthy when you get home and be carefull of your portion sizes as your not moving around as much and you could gain weight … im a healthy eating freak so im quite good lol and it all aids towards a speedy recovery , pig out chritmas day thats allowed lol

well physio came back to me and we walked out into the corridor and said tomorrow morning we will do steps.

also made me independent so been able to walk round my self main once an hr just to go loo.

said hopeful I can go home tomorrow too.

the dr who performed operation with my consultant came to see me and said ball was totally shot at. has also been able to bring the length of my legs inline to which I did notice when walking as felt more level. said if do everything by book by using crutches and not bending etc for 6 weeks then I should have good recovery

      Brilliant

you won't believe the difference it will make having legs the same length. You will feel like a new woman!

Fingers crossed for going home tomorrow!

just hope dont wake up and it's back 10steps tomorrow

Sadly I found it is a bit like that. One day its great and the next it is s**t. I kept a diary both times and found that the bad and good days were remarkably consistent. It is more like 3 forward 1 back and then suddenly you turn a corner. Earlier this week I had a bad day, I ached badly, my knee was hot and painful but then the following day and every day since it has been amazing! it turned a corner at the same time on the first hip - at about 4 and a half weeks. It seems that the more I walk the better it feels. I saw the consultant today and he was really pleased with my walking. He says all restrictions removed and I can ditch the stick when I feel ready. You are certainly on course for that too

      keep us posted!

well its 12.50 and I'm yet to sleep.

I feel really uncomfortable in the groin area.

they've just given me a horrid substance bu strife saying try one dose it's a pain relief, but insure if pain, just very uncomfortable and keeping me awake.. anyway will see if it works and play on my phone for a bit.

great news about restrictions now removed for you, how far are you along with this hip for him to say this?

Oh dear -I hope that you managed some sleep. it is difficult to differentiate between pain and discomfort,I am not sure that discomfort isn't worse in some ways. Again groin pain isnt unusual so don't worry too much - a lot has happened down there and things need to settle/ move back into place

Sally and I had our ops on the same day 18th November so it will be 5 weeks on Monday

      hi

it was definite discomfort. it was because I had wedge inbetween legs which pulled my groin, i then started playing about with my other leg and found comfort by having the other leg like in a triangle position .

nothing like your own bed though.

got up 1st thing and stuffed bag down top and managed to wash myself on bathroom too . felt again more human by doing this...

at least you both 5 weeks forward and seeing a world of difference it is already making to your lives. that keeps me going....

I agree with with you Vicky doing everything by the book, although I had twelve weeks precautions which no one else seems to have.

The only thing I would recommend is joining a pilates class in a few weeks, to help strengthen the muscles.

You might get a little depressed in a week or so, if you do it will pass quickly, it seems normal during the early days of healing.
