Hip replacement gone bad

Has anyone had a hip replacement and then 9 months later have to do it again.   It seems like my stem is loose in the leg and my leg (right) is about 1/2 shorter.    I have been in thigh and knee pain ever since the surgery.   I go back in next week for the replacement.   I was wondering what could have caused this, bad implant or just how these type of things go sometimes.

I had my hip replacement just over 2 years ago and had pain like you in the knee and thigh and the more I walked the more pain i was in. I moaned and moaned and eventually said i wanted a revision. All hell broke loose and a flurry of tests - the last was a gamma ray test which shoed a glow at the bottom of the stem, This showed I was having an issue and after 2 years no further bone growth would fill the gap and like you it was uncemented. FINALLY  after much talking and discussion about risks etc i stated that at 52 i had poor quality of life pain daily and wanted to see if they could fix it by a cemented revision so i can lead a normal life - and am looking at this going ahead at the end of March 2015.  They were reluctant to do this as I was the ONLY failure on their ops and statistics count and i obviously count! so keep moaning all of you that have a BAD amount of daily pain after 8 months as you need to ensure they monitor you to make sure you get the result you need!!!

I had my right hip done 2 years ago too.  My left hip was done 10 months later.  Everything was fine until 6-7 weeks ago when I lifted a large ceramic planter to remove the caddy underneath and in doing so, strained my back.  The back pain was gone after about 2 weeks, but immediately after I began feeling pain in my thigh (hamstrings?) and knee that just keeps getting worse.  I walk about 4 miles 3-4 times a week and I am not sure if i am doing the right thing or not.  I am also not sure any more if the thigh pain is due to the ceramic planter or if it is a sign of something else? I am planning to schedule an appointment if it does get better in a week or so.

What ever happened to you? I did same thing and have been dealing with thigh pain on both sides for two months now. What was your final outcome?

Hello Marge - Sorry it took so long to respond.

it did get better since my posting of 6 months ago.  Or maybe it is that I am just getting used to the muscle pain in my thighs and not paying attention any more.  It is a lingering light pain, very bearable, in the back of my thighs and often to my butt.

Good Afternoon, I know it has been some time since your revision. Please tell me what problems led to you realizing the problem. I had a lthr on Nov 10 last year and a revision because of infection on Dec 02. Since that time I have pain when I step onto left foot. It is a sharp pain that goes straight down my leg and across the knee joint. This is becoming a very long process.

What ever happened? I also picked up something heavy and had pain in my thighs. What was your outcome?

Top this. Hip replacement 3 years ago. New hip placed .5 inch higher than other hip.  Leg shortened .5 inches.  Pelvis on 35 degree tilt.  Have been tryin to find out what went wrong and get revision surgery for past 2 year.  Now I find out that instead of a normal size 4 joint, I have had a +9 implanted.  I've consulted 2 surgeons who say that bone has formed around the spike and the femoral head cannot be separated from the part that goes in the leg.  So, it can't be revised.  I live in Canada.

Just out if curiousity, did you have trouble bending the knee since surgery? That's my problem and I was wondering if something is wrong with the placement of the device.

My hip replacement was the result of careful planning by the surgeon, using a computer program.  He put the new hip 1/2 inch higher than the other hip, shortened the leg by 1/2 inch an thus put the pelvis on a 35 degree angle.  The implant has a neck over twice as long as is recommended, making the operated leg turn inwards.  This has effectively changed my center of gravity. I walk on the outside of the foot and ankle.  Orthotics don't help, lifts don't help. I had a bad reputation with dotors and this is my punishment.

When the hip is too high, lifting the knee is difficult, such as entering the driver's seat of a car.  It is three yrs past surgery.  I have balance issues, walking problems and my body is tilted towards the operated leg which is 1" shorter than the other. Pain is there 24 hours per day, primarily in the area on the side by the hip which feels like the prosthesis is poking out.

All of this is confirmed by the reports from the computer used during surgery and an independenmedical exam.

My surgeon was out to get me and stupid enough to use a program outlined on UTube.

Ken - I just wanted to send you my love and support. You are being very calm, and very brave. I do hope the next operation goes well, and you will soon return to an active pain free life.

I hope some of the posts have been helpful in guiding you through this, and you know we are all here for you.

Reading the posts on here I realise how lucky I've been. In some ways I'm glad I didn't find this forum until after my op as it would have scared me even more! I had an excellent surgeon and was walking without crutches at 3 weeks. I've had virtually no pain  at all - just discomfort now and again in the initial weeks after the op. Back practising Tai Chi at 2.5 months, I did do lots of physiotherapy. Started about a week after I came home from hospital working out with my PT. I'm sure this helped a lot. Also, my muscles weren't cut - just stretched - and this must have made the recovery faster.

Reading these posts I've realised how lucky I am! But I wanted to post  this to reassure people waiting for the op that the op can be a huge success. I had an excellent surgeon and was walking without crutches at 3 weeks. No pain to speak of. I did lots of physiotherapy - started working with a therapist a week after my op. That really helps. And take the pain meds regularly as this helps you exercise. My muscles weren't cut - just stretched - and I'm sure this helped too. The op has transformed my life. But I'm rather glad I didn't find this forum until afterwards as I would have been even more scared. So I think it's important to record the successes too.....
