Hip Replacement - muscle not re-attached

Had a total hip replacement done in Jan 2014 - not sure whether its a fault of the surgery or my body not doing what it should have but the muscle that was cut through has not re-attached at all. As a result of this I struggle to walk very far as there is no muscle strength to rely on which means I am worse off than before the surgery. I have worked really hard to strenthen my core muscles to compensate but it hasn't helped. Has anyone else had the same problem?

Hi Helen, My THR was done in 2010 and I have atrophied muscle and tissue so I have a big dent where my incision is and also have so much pain walking and just everyday activities. I can't believe all the problems people have after replacements. Why can't these doctors get it right ?????

the left hip has not given me a one ts problem.
The right hip was great for a year but in the past year it has dislocated 5 times. The hipnfeductions ( putting it back in is extremely painful.
Howeve, No pain walking or standing, even with the large posterior muscle “gone” I do yard work, haul around mulch bags etc...
My surgeon says that the large posterior muscle/ tension that holds the hip in place is not there. He contends if I do not have a hip revision it will Co tinge to dislocate.
i a very worried because, as I said, I have no pain unless it dislocates. So he gives no guarentees( of course he can’t) and I am worried I will be like many of you and have the limitations and pain you are discussing.

I had THR in right hip last year in July. I’ve always had some discomfort when sitting. I figured it just took time. My surgeon keeps tabs for 1 year after his surgeries. A couple of months ago I hurt my hip. The next morning I couldn’t stand sit or lay without having excruciating pain. I got right into my dr and he put me back on my walker. I ate ibuprofen like it was candy. He had me come back 2 weeks later and he gave me a cortisone shot. He wanted to make sure it wasn’t my back. I seen him again in 2 weeks. The shot helped with the night time pain which was terrible. So he said I could start walking and go back to pool. But no hip exercises so I don’t aggrevate it. He told me that the fascia (tendon) probably didn’t heal. And I would have to have surgery. But since then my leg gets a sharp pain in upper thigh in front and gives out on me once and awhile and I can’t walk but 5 min on treadmill. And then my hip hurts. Also since last I saw him my left shoulder has been giving me terrible trouble. Very painful. I found out that when one hip isn’t working the opposite shoulder tries accommodates. So Helen don’t let this go too long cause it will affect another part of your body. I totally trust my surgeon. I don’t believe he cut something he shouldn’t. Right now he’s sticking with me and trying to help me.
I’ve never been in that normal group. If something out of the ordinary can happen? Well I’m in that out of the ordinary group. So drs always have to think outside the box with me.
Good Luck. Make sure you get it fixed. I have researched this and these surgeries are very successful.

A few years ago after a hip injury my muscle that adheres to my hip atrophied. I needed a complete hip replacement so the doctor preformed a surgery to bring a muscle around from my backside to adhere to my hip. After healing he did a hip replacement. The muscle surgery did not work so I was left with a very unsteady hip. After two severe dislocations I had another surgery and a screw was put in to hold my hip in place. Now, two years later I
am back to walking with a walker, my hip is giving out, very painful and doctor said nothing can be done until it goes completely out again. Then another screw, chance of another infection and still no muscle to hold it. Has anyone had this happen. Also, wonder if anyone knows a doctor to help. After dr tried to move muscle he said this was his first attempt. 😳Thank you for any help. I am thrilled to find you. Sharon

Hi Sorry for the late reply, it's just that I had an hip replacement in 2011. And I am experiencing the same problem, unable to walk far even with the aid of walking sticks. And also I am unable to lift my leg more than 4 inches off the floor and always in a lot of pain. I have been on morphine since I had the operation and it just helps me manage the pain. And like you I have been back and forth to the hospital trying to get answers, but every time they take an x-ray, they come back to me saying that everything looks normal and we can't understand why you are in so much pain and discomfort. And probable now I know what is going on with me because I have come across someone who is experiencing the same symptoms. And I am sorry to hear helen31675 that you are suffering the same symptoms.
Kind Regards
