HIP replacement OP - French Gel on fingernails?

Posted , 9 users are following.

My hip replacement is planned in 3 weeks.

I have French gel polish on my fingernails (base clear - tips white. No stickers or design)

Will I have to remove this for the operation?

Thanks for your help.

every hospital is different but as long as they can see your nails under the clear polish you should be ok

I had painted toe nails and it was ok, but hospitals vary. maybe check?

    Hope your op goes well

I would, and I wouldn't get a pedicure after your replacement for at least a year. it's fairly certain I contracted a Strep B infection of my implant 5 weeks after surgery by getting a pedicure. Strep B is a common bug that lives on our skin and the manicurist pierced under my big toe a bit, during the pedicure. Likely just enough to introduce the bacteria and I'm telling you....it was hell. Required a second surgery, second healing, long term penicillin therapy and routine bloodwork. I am very leary of pedicures (and kinda manicures too) now after that. Just a word of caution. it could have been much worse too. Scary!

i had mine removed and then redone a couple of days after. i know that the little gadget they put on your finger to read the oxygen in your blood may not work. as I didn't have gel on my toes they put it on there for the pre op checks. if you have had yours yet they should tell you then. good luck with the op.

clear nail varnish is usually OK . I would perhaps take the means of removal in with you just in case. I had a pedicure, with clear polish, the week before the op and the next one 5 weeks later

    All the best

My hospital gave us a preparation list which included no nail varnish of any sort also no jewellery. Also a shower/bath before we came in and they gave us some drink we had to take at my pre op which I kept in the fridge until my op.

I'm in the US, THR July 12, 2019. I had a pink gel color on my nails. They told me they ask to take the polish off to make sure the oxygen monitor will work. Mine did (apparently they have luck with light colors). They also said they could always put it on your toe if it doesn't.I had called my Nurse Advocate from the hospital the day before to make sure. You may want to call a head to make sure as every hospital is different. Best wishes for a successful surgery and a speedy recovery.

I think in my hospital's case it is easier just to say no nail varnish, so less hassle for them!

I'm not a doctor, but what does it have to do with the THR?

during any operation the patient is monitored . The O2 levels are often monitored through a machine that uses a clip on the finger or toe nails it needs to be see through
