Hip Revision 4 weeks ago

14 months ago I had left hip anterior approach THR. Was problematic from 3 weeks. Knee flexion leg extension painful, felt like my leg was giving way. I had my right hip done 6 years ago , posterior approach & at 3 weeks I was walking gently with limited pain & by 6 weeks pain free & gradually increasing activity. I'm a personal trainer so movement is important to me.

Back to the left hip, I had anterior approach with a different surgeon to the surgeon who did my right hip. I thought anterior approach would be an easier surgery to recover from.

Unfortunately it turns out the acetabular cup was protruding & rubbing on my psoas constantly irritating & giving me bursitis,

I got a second opinion from the surgeon who did my original right THR & his opinion was the cup was indeed protruding & sharp edges were the cause of my continued pain.

I agreed to have hip revision. That was done 4 weeks ago. I had a bone graft, cup replaced, screws put in & it was the posterior approach. Up until last Tuesday I was going fantastic, even managing to walk without my stick.

I've stuck to my rehab protocol & diligently done my exercises.

I woke up Wednesday & couldn't put weight on that left leg, so my stick is back out.

I was only taking paracetamol for the last week for pain relief but since Wednesday I'm taking a Tramadol to help with the pain.

So sorry for the long post! I'm scared something has gone wrong. I have new pain in my groin.

I've let my surgeon know & having an XRay on Monday.

I guess I'm wanting to hear if others of you were going great & then taken a bacward step. Is this new pain part of the healing process?

I'm 51 years old, fit, not overweight.

I'm quietly freaking out😔

Thank you for taking the time to read my post.

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Hello,

I think I have a somewhat similiar case with yours.

I'm 53, had my first THR two years ago, posterior approach from my left hip. Everything went well, at 8 weeks I was back to normal, walking, driving, working etc, After 1 year my right hip started troubling me. Eventually I had THR from my right hip this July. After 8 weeks everything seems fine with the newly operated hip))

I started physio to strengthen my muscles.

But now I have pain in my previously operated hip... I can not do leg extension with knee flexed as you had mentioned.

I used to do it without pain but now it hurts and the mobility is not good. I went to physio and they forced me to try, maybe thats the reason why I have problems now. I hope it is not something important but it troubles me...I wonder if it is aproblem related to muscles or the operation?

    What is your opinion??

What I learned from other peoples experiences is that it takes long to heal totally. So maybe we should give time to our bodies to rest and get well...

Hope to hear your good news...

    Best wishes,

    Desire

Morning Inhal03672.  Quick run down on myself.  I had my first hip replacement surgery last July.  Anterior....I was having a bit of pain when walking and a little difficulty with the exercises ...3 weeks later I go to dr for check up and find I dislocated my hip.  Was walking on it like that for over a week!  Dr was going to try to pop back in but couldn't. Had to open me up and give me a total hip revision!   I believe that recovery from a revision can be a bit more difficult and takes longer to heal. I also had to be 6 weeks non weight bearing and no hip exercises or hip flexion past 80 degrees.   You're still pretty new in your revision.  And maybe too soon to leave behind the stick.  Being you're a fitness trainer I'm sure you're anxious to get back and maybe pushed yourself too much.   Groin pain is very common too.  Have you been icing?  I found that to be very helpful and I'm a year out and still ice.  I also use heat.  I too take tramadol on occasion, but now I'm dealing with nerve pain and sensitivity.  A whole other struggle.   I hope all goes well for you and everything is ok with your hip.  God's blessings to you for a speedy recovery and healing.  Hugs 🤗Linda

Thank you your kind words and for sharing your journey Linda. I too was wondering if I'd dislocated something. I had my X-ray today so time will tell. The Tramadol has helped a lot but does make me feel out of it.

Getting a hip replacement is such a lottery😔 Not as straightforward as we're led to believe.

Prayer & thoughts that your nerve pain & sensitivity can be managed for you.

      All the best.

Morning.  So what did X-ray show?   Everything ok?

      Hi Linda

Got X-ray & report today. My surgeon hasn't got back to me yet but radiologists report says no infection or loosening or break visible. Woohoo! I'm taking that! What a relief.

I'm hoping my "setback" was just part of the healing process.  I allowed the pain to get the better of me on Sunday instead of taking pain meds. Took a few hours for the pain to settle down.  The revision was quite complex, bone graft & screws so I'm thinking lots of repairing needs to take place.

Surgeon should get back to me over the next couple of days.

I'm using my stick which I'm fine with.

It means a lot that you're thoughts are with me.

Hip replacement is not a walk in the park that's for sure!

      Wishing you all the best,

Morning inhal03672!   That's great news that there was no dislocation or breaks!   That's one thing you don't want especially after a revision!   yup hip replacements are NO walk in the park!!  Remember icing is really good for the pain and swelling.  Which I'm sure you know.  Walking is really good too.  Let us know what you're dr says when you see him.   If you're like me, taking meds especially pain meds, is not something I want to do!  I on occasion take tramadol usually 1/2 a pill.  Hope you have a great day!   God's blessings to you.  Hugs 🤗Linda.
