Hip revision in June healed September by going to pool . Went to therapy 1 time =major set back !

Had a hip revision 6/5/19 because my Zimmer stem broke in my left hip. Cobalt stem caused metallosis and weakened femur. I rehabbed myself in a pool and was 99% healed by September. I was told to go to therapist Sept 25, 2019 where I was told to stand on the revised leg for count of 100. Ever since that date my hip has deteriorated to the point that I need a walker and have severe pain. What happened ?

    Hi Stefan,

Sadly, not all therapists are good at their job. I do pilates and we have to stand on one leg sometimes moving into various poses. When I stand on the operated leg I can only hold it for a very short time as it gets uncomfortable and needs shaking out . I would never do more than my hip can take regardless of who is telling you, it is not their hip and they have not had a hip replacement. You hip is still new and settling in, if it hurts or uncomfortable do not do it.

I agree totally Jen, I am very wary indeed of pushing myself too far. Reference standing on operated side, no way would I have attempted a leg count of 100, I seriously believe too much too soon is not the way forward, taking things steady and listening to your own body are far too important !

Hi. Why is it that Physio at hospitals and in private all seem to be following some kind of rule book as to what ALL patients should be able to carry out and pass before being allowed onto another level of exercises!!! 12 months now since breaking the neck of my femur and I still can't stand for more than a count of 20 before getting the wobbles. I couldnt do it before my fall so why should I be magically be able to do it now???? So sorry your progress has stopped because of this. We have so many different tendons, muscles and ligaments that all work together in different sequences depending on our actions while walking, stepping, kneeling, squatting etc. So while you have strengthened those combos used when swimming, those combos used for standing/ balancing where not used , so therefore you had a weakness. I do hope things work out for you. Take care. Regards Linda

It is not only physios Linda, the doctors also have to follow strict guidelines. There are instructions on computers that have to be followed and boxes ticked.
