Hip revision recovery

Hi my mother inlaw is down for hip revision surgery next week and I'm panicking about her recovery time. surgery is on cemented hip which has gotten so loose it keeps popping out and digging into her back. she is in alot of pain and is nearly completely housebound and has a very bad limp (she has had a limp though since 1st replacement).

They have told her going to replace implants remove cement and bone graft on worn down bones and try as best they can to improve limp. they have told her surgery has 30% chance of being successful.

my question is really want to know what to expect even worst case scenario? and how long it will be before she can be left at home on her own? (she lives alone)

thank you

oh dear that is a sad situation and predicted outcome. she is lucky to have you and family. This will be very helpful and she understands the revision issues. the best you can do is be there for her and by your current concern she has the best care ..love from her family.

as a 3 time hippie i totally get the whole complicated picture, a cemented hip is very tricky and i had similar issue and bone grafts.

hip surgery is major surgery most revision specialists have had years of experience along with a great surgical team .

sending prayers your way that the surgery will be a success. stay positive will be very helpful as attitude and support is important.

keep us posted on her surgery.

thank you Barbara. Just panicking about outcome its heartbreaking looking at her. she has deteriorated so much since beginning of covid. she was such an active independent woman before covid. she can can barely walk around the house now.

It's a very tough situation to watch someone we love deteriorate knowing all that can be done is be there for them for support . Although that in itself means the world to her.

In many cases patients with RA seem to have a harder time with THR .

I wonder if iron or b-12 and vit-D levels can be checked.

Studies have shown patients with hip pain after THR experience cognitive decline due to the many pain trigger emissions that block the normal thought process.

Maybe look into counselling for you both , online is easier . Sometime they can help you both cope in a positive way and redirect stress, pain and negativity to help produce the hormones in the body to feel better.

Disengage from everyday settings by just getting out or playing a game of cards.

Sometimes coping as a care taker requires support too and can be helpful since many family caretakers are at risk from the stress.

In many cases we try to treat the body , bones, joints and over look the emotional component.

      Sending blessings your way.

thank you so much barbara. I'm fine just my mother in law so heartbreaking for her. but your right think the emotional stress is worse than the physical pain. she is eager to get it done because of the pain.❤
