Hip, thigh, buttock & knee pain after thr

Posted , 11 users are following.

Had a thr last nov, 4 wks post op while at therapy felt a little snap in the groin area. Since then the pain has gotten unbearable & has spread from groin to upper hip, buttock, thigh & knee! The surgeon who performed the surgery said “I gave you a new hip what else do you want from me” so after 3 more surgeons, not one will tell me what is wrong with my hip due to being a colleague of the previous surgeon even though they are in diff parts of the state! I can’t walk without the cane, can’t sleep more than 3 hrs, can’t lay on my left side, all of this due to the excruciating pain & it’s getting worse by the day. Can’t bear weight on it, can’t wear clothing that constricts it & it’s all tender to the touch, I describe the thigh  pain as deep in the bone even though there’s no bone but only hardware. Low grade fever also, tested negative for an infection!! Anyone had this issue?

i have no idea as i am learning about thr,   but sorry to hear that.  while reading over the last month, i have noticed a trend of issues that seem to be connected to physical therapy... and pushing to hard while listening to the physical therapist.  my take away on reading has been go slow... then go slower... and if the pt tells you to push... send them packing!   good luck to you I hope you get it squared away.

Haha. You are spot on there Charlie. I have sent my PT packing once. Listen to yr gut. Go at yr own pace. Some physio think it's a race. Some are great tho. I have found a great 1 now.

My physios were wonderful, they said if its causing you more pain you are doing it wrong, they kept emphazing just until you feel the pull, and once a day is not enough, you need to keep moving as much as you can, have a rest, and then get back to the exercises, suggestions were standing at the bathroom sink, washing your hands, after toilet, scrubbing teeth, do some mini dips, just an inch or so, and or leg swings, same when at the kitchen sink, drove husband nuts seeing me dipping up and down while waiting for the kettle to boil, but best advice I could have been given.

All of these exercises you do at you own pace, and listen to what YOUR BODY is telling you not some physio who thinks they know what they are doing, I used to say to them you will understand when you have a hip replacement.

I was very lucky to come across a chiropractor, who had just had a hip replacement when I needed some advice, or thought I did, he showed me exactly the same exercises and nothing else that the hospital had given me to do.

Best site I have found that has the same exercises I did and still do to stay strong, is coastal orthopedics in western Australia, booklet, physiotherapy exercises following total hip replacement.

Hi! I completely stopped pt @ the 5 wk mark, I couldn’t handle the pain. I’ve actually stopped working at the 5 mo mark, pain is getting worse daily, hopefully the newest surgeon I’m set to see in 3 wks can figure it out & help me.

I agree Charlie, thank you! I’ve seen another surgeon & he states he knows what the issue is but, he’s not willing to help me due to a conflict of interest with the original surgeon being a colleague in the same network, so I see another one today, hopefully this one is honest & willing to help me.

I had same issue...MRI showed deep bone infection and unit not fit right. Took me 3 months to find a surgeon who would fix the original DR issue. I am now in the middle of 2 stage redo which requires a cement spacer with pic line for 6 weeks. Then new hip in 6 more. Keep asking and keep seeking a new Dr. Trust me it will not get better on it's own. Good luck and God bless.

Candi, did you have any blood work that showed an infection? I’ve had a ct scan without contras but it only showed one screw to far into my pelvis but not enough to cause the severe pain I’m having. My blood work came back neg for an infection.

Tammy:  You better get this attended to.  Find a competent surgeon who can find out what the problem is.  Have they tested you for metalossis?

Hi Daniel, I’ve only had blood work for an infection & a ct scan & both negative for anything other than 1 screw is a lil far into my pelvis. No contrast w/Ct! I’m set to see another specialist in 3 wks so hopefully this one is willing to figure it out & help me!

Yes, a lot of us on this site have had same or similar problems unfortunately.  I don’t have much advice since I’ve been through a simulator thing.  The one thing I would do is find the best hip specialist you can in another city where there is no conflict of interest with your surgeon.  I ended up saving an MRI done in another city in a hospital that specializes in orthopedic surgery tat has better software to eliminate the artifact.  I hope you are resting and not continuing to exercise.  It’s awful and I feel for you.  You really need to see someone who will try to get to the source if your pain,

hello from Hawaii. I just join this group because I'm 3 weeks away from another joint revision surgery number two on my right side number 3 4 total replacements and I was looking for a discussion group. I've had my left side hip done 3 times also. anyways I saw your posting about your situation where you went into therapy one day and you had a little pop in your leg and you said you were fine when you walked in and when you walked out you could barely walk and the same thing happened to me after one of my replacements. what happened to me was that when my doctor does revisions and they usually take a ligament and tendon off the bone around the capsule when they're getting at the joint quite often my doctor will use a suture string and tie the tendon back down to the bone so that it helps reattach itself to the Bone quicker. and my physical therapists after only 4 weeks decided to do some lateral abduction to that leg and when they pulled it out with too much pressure they snapped the suture string off the bone and pulled the tendon off.. I immediately called my surgeon and he quickly explain to me that that's what it was that they should never have done that exercise until minimum of 6 weeks after the surgery. anyways I'm not sure if that's the issue for you but it really sounds exactly like my experience especially considering you heard a noise and felt a little snap in the groin area which is exactly where I felt the same thing but mine was a big noise cuz everybody in the PT room heard it. anyways it sounds like you're having problems diagnosing the problems from your postings that I've read today. Hope I've helped in some way and good luck aloha

Hi Richard, so I just found out yesterday that it’s the IT Band, apparently they surgeon did not put it back in the proper spot & it will have to ge released now! What I feel popping is it sliding back & forth over the joint, finally after 6 surgeons, on my 7th & she knew exactly what it was, she used a sonogram to diagnosis it & some injections into the band, talks about excruciating pain, it’s been unbearable but it’s onky for diagnosing the correct issue! So I also found I that the surgeon who performed my thr severed numerous nerves & this is the it feelslike  a thousand little fingers with knives are all stabbing inside of my thigh, hopefully with time this will repair it’s self! All of this should’ve been taken care of by then get surgeon who performed my thr, but he is extremely difficult & can’t see that he screwed up big time!

sorry to hear all of that tammy. what approach did your surgeon use? and regarding the surgeon, i don't know if you can tell us who he/she is, but can you tell us how much experience he/she supposedly has?    good luck too you.

That is appalling Tammy, you poor thing. The trouble is as soon as a surgeon has done the op a lot of them do not seem to want to know and deny there is anything wrong, so it is a big fight to get things sorted out. I do hope you do get things sorted out as the pain seems awful.
