Hiatus hernias are quite common and most people manage to live with them OK.
The top of your stomach has pushed up into your chest trough the hole in th ediaphragm the oesophagus passes through. This means the muscles that close the lower oesophageal sphincter don't co-ordinate properly and reflux is exacerbated.
It's the reflux that's causing the symptoms. The acid suppressants and Gaviscon are good at reducing acid so the reflux is less damaging but they don't control the reflux itself. That you have to manage by lifestyle changes:
Lose weight, if necessary, avoid overfilling your stomach (eat littl and often), avoid tight clothing, avoid exercise after food that would compress the stomach, leave at least 3 hours between your last meal and going to bed.
If you cannot control the reflux by these means, you might consider having surgery called a fundoplication. It may sound scary but those of us who had it were glad we did,

I completely understand how you feel. I was diagnosed with a HH 18 months ago and been very ill like you and others here I also had trips to A&E only to be told there was nothing wrong with my heart. I tried Lanzoprozole and gaviscon but nothing seems to help. I don;t need to lose weight so that won't help, I don't eat too late and try and eat as healthy as possible. Some days are better but others I really struggle. Doctors say "probably anxiety" Really?! No! A 3cm HH apparantly isnt big enough to operate on either. It's painful, affects my breathing, gives me palpitations, makes me feelsick yet still they say a small HH won't make me feel this bad! It is extremely frustrating! I hope we allstart feeling better soon

I have a breathing problem also caused by hiatal hernia but don't know how that happens, do you know if hernia is pressing on something?, I am seeing a surgeon next month in Seattle that does lots of this kind of surgeries to see if he can help me, I also have a burning pain in between my shoulders, also itching. My breathing gets worse as time goes on, not a lung problem, that was tested.

I have that burning in my back also and when I go to bed, I can not sleep on my back , it feels like I am on vibration . I am also having very severe breathing problems. My doctor has referred me to Dr Aye at Sweedish in Seattle, I have been reading other blogs and many of the people say he is the very best, should have some one that has done a lot of the surgeries and from what I have read he has. They say the hill or the nissan, please go on line and check them out, I don't know enough to tell you. One of my main concerns is my age, I am 81 but still very active. The best to you. Just type in dr Aye at Sweedish b in Seattle WA and he will come up.
