Hoarseness after endoscopy.

Hi

i had an endoscopy Friday, now Monday. I've got awful hoarseness and increased heartburn. I'm back on Lansoprazole after stopping it for the procedure. I have a decent sized Hiatus Hernia and mild gastritis, nothing oesophageal. Any idea how long this hoarseness will last and do I need to do anything about it?

It should go away in a week or so with no treatment. Swallowing that big tube, then having it pulled up again, tends to irritate everything in the area.

It's very unlikely that there has been serious damage, and it should be just from the stretching and scraping of the vocal cords at the top of the esophagus, which will normally heal and recover in a week or so. Suggest seeing your pharmacy about some medication to soothe the throat. The increased heartburn would also be from the increased secretions from an unhappy esophagus and stomach and should settle back to what you had before with the gastritis. What now? Is the Hiatus hernia worth operating on?

Thank you both so much, I'm a nurse and this is certainly not my are of expertise!

I thought it would just be to do with the stretching in the area and increased secretions getting through to the oesophagus.

Hubby will get a bit of peace!

    Thanks again.

I'm sure you're right. I used to be a nurse too but can't say it helped when I had my own gastroscopy!
