Hole in dural patch

My 13 year old daughter was diagnosed with Chiari Malformation and consequently had a decompression surgery.  Following the surgery she had a rough recovery and it turned out that a hole had formed in the dural patch that was installed in her duramater.  Once determined, she quickly had another surgery to repair the hole.  Through the process we befriended the family in the neighboring ICU unit and learned that their son had the exact same surgery and the exact same problem, resulting in the exact same curative surgery to repair the hole in his patch.  In speaking with the surgeon we learned that the holes were created from a reaction in which an adhesive that was used during the surgery essentially ate a hole through the bovian patch that was installed.  Has anyone else experienced a hole in their dural patch?  Or, has anyone experienced leaking through the patch that could have been caused by a sealant?

    Hi Brad,

I have also been operated. Just wondering how they see the leaking through the patch. Is fluid leaking out from the wound? Or did they specific took an mri to be sure that it is leaking from the patch.

She woke up with significant swelling at the incision point. We could feel that it was fluid filled. An MRI showed the fluid (cerebral spinal fluid), but it wasn't confirmed that there was a hole until they went back in.

Hi there, thank you for sharing this, at least next time if we see this type of issue we would be able to discuss about it - I personally never heard of that...anyway how is your daughter now?  - my surgeon refuse to put dura patch..he said that its causing more problem - but some surgeon like to put patch on it...I hope that your daughter will have her quality of life back..but still as ex chiari patient even though they had recovered they have to listen to their body and still have to be cautious of what they are doing..heavy lifting ..put too much strenuous on the physical activities
