HoLEP 4 weeks on.

Hi again,

I'm 4 weeks on tomorrow from my HoLEP surgery at Newcastle, UK and am pleased to say that I'm continuing to be very pleased with the improvements that this has given me. These last few days there has been no blood in my urine and had no scabs of any sort. I'm getting 2 or 3 nights where I sleep through and on other days just need to get up once. I do make sure I have a final pee after my 30 mins read. I was expecting to have RE but to my very pleasant surprise things have starting to work again this week. I didn't even as ask my consultant about RE as I just assumed it would happen.

in my case, I understand why so much emphasis is put on the exercising of the pelvic floor muscles. Sometimes when I'm in the house and put off going for a pee for too long, I then get a desperate urgency to pee and one needs to be able to hang on until getting to the toilet., hence the need for pelvic muscles to be working well. This never happens when I'm outside and is becoming less of a problem with time.

In conclusion, I would say I'm as near normal as I've ever been and should have had the op sooner and am grateful for the skill of my surgeon and the care I got at the hospital. My 36 hours there was more of a jolly than an ordeal.

Thanks jay,  I had a long time waiting mainly because I was reticent about an op and the pills worked quite well for a lot of years.  It is such a relief to get my life back and not to have to take the two BHP pills for hopefully a long time.

Breeze, what pills were you on all those 10 years ? Any bad side effects? Hank

Hank, The two pills were tamsulosin which is a muscle relaxant and is marvelous because it works within a few hours. It has side effects but the main one i noticed was a slight reduction in my distance focus. The second drug, dutasteride is , I think, has worse side effects such as drying up of seminal fluid and can cause man breasts. Its an anti testosterone drug which works slowly to reduce the size of your prostate and can take up to a few months before noticing an improvement of ones flow. When i first saw the consultant he told me to take both for 6 months and then stop taking the dutasteride. They worked very well for a few years but I only took the dutasteride when my flow rate got worse and stopped after a few months when my flow rate inoroved. I was aware of its side effects so only took it for about a total off 24 months in 10 years.

I only noticed any side effects after abiut 4 years when i started to dry up and latér RE. I had one dizzy spell of two weeks but didnt realise it might have been the tansulosin. A year ago after being on the dutasteride fir sime 8 months noticed tenderness and slight swelling in my breasts. I should have had the an op earlier but got out of the loop and was ok on the pills for abiut 6 or 7 years.

    Hi All,

Just an update at 7 and a half week from my HoLEP procedure. As stated in my 2 weekly updates I am extremely pleased with the result apart from one problem period of urgency which has now abated since the last week. In summation,.

At most only need one pee overnight and if having my last drink before 8pm can go through the night without getting up once

My flow is extremely strong and I fully evacuate some 200 mltrs in about 13 secs. I pee some 350 mltrs first thing in the morning.

    Completely free of pills.

Only had 10 days of slightly bloody pees, with no clots and no pain.

The only problem that I had lasted from week 3 to week 6 was an urgency problem, which is quite worrying at the time, but is now not such a problem and is subsiding daily. I would be sat on the sofa watching tv and get an urge and in the first two weeks of the problem I literally could only hold on for about 10 secs so had to dash to the loo. I admit I was caught out a few times and wet myself.  As I am retired this hasnt been a huge problem because I'm always near a loo, but strangely it wasn't such a big problem whilst I was out shopping or socialising , maybe in part because I wouldnt drink much if I knew I was going out. I have been drinking at least 1500 to 2000 mltrs a day. I think the urgency is reducing because of the continued healing and for the fact that I have had to strengthen my pelvic floor muscles as a necessity.

In conclusion the 3 to 4 weeks of urgency have been a problem but a small price to pay for getting rid of BPH and all its life sapping affects.
