Holep Surgery May 2023

just want to share my personal experience in an effort to help others. 61-year-old very healthy active male. developed severely enlarged prostate 92 ml. Holep best option but I was terrified because my father had similar surgery at my age (35 yrs ago) and he was never the same. had so many fears about post-surgical quality of life. all fears were unfounded. went home 2 hours after surgery with almost no pain. treated with acetaminophen only for 4 days and then nothing. minimum bleeding and minimal clots. after 2 weeks only a drop or two of blood when starting and stopping stream. after 3 weeks no blood whatsoever. I cannot believe how this has improved my quality of life. I have always urinated every 30 minutes to an hour my entire life and now I go up to 3 hours during the day and I sleep through the night completely without getting up. my surgeons and doctor at Mayo clinic in Phoenix were fantastic. this was my first experience with the Mayo clinic and every single person that I met there from greeters to secretaries surgeons and nurses we're warm and supportive during this emotional journey. I cannot recommend them, or this surgery highly enough. don't be fearful this was probably the easiest surgery and recovery I've had in my life.

Thanks for sharing. This just reconfirms all the data available on the web about HoLep. Who was your surgeon ?

    Norm thanks for sharing.

Great job overcoming your fears. They have come a long ways in these procedures. My dads friend had similar results as your dad about 15 years ago.

Is RE and incontinence still a side effect? I'm contemplating between HOLEP and Aquablation. Still very much intimate before my Urinary Retention BPH and looking for the best procedure possible to remain the same as I was prior to BPH . 65 years and very active.

    Thanks Mike

yes thank you for sharing! I am probably doing Holep soon. My prostate is app. 70 grams! I get up about every two hours at night and go away too many times during the day. Often I go just within a few minutes of urinating. I am told my prostate is pushing against my bladder, as opposed to being very large. I had one physician ready to do REZUM and another ready to do TURP but I think Holep is the way to go. With the aqua therapies my understanding is you could have to do it again in five years or so. As with Mike, my big concern is potential incontinence and no change to the polyuria. I guess there’s always a small chance of something not being perfect.
