I had my hemorrhoidectomy on Thursday 9/23 about 10 days ago. I tried to have a BM that Saturday as I was taking a lot of Dulcolax and Colace. It felt like I had to go and I tried but it felt like my hole was wayyyy too small and it hurt to push, yet I couldn't get anything out. I drank an entire bottle of Magnesium Citrate that afternoon. I still didn't go. So Saturday night I took several doses of Milk of Magnesia and I woke up at 4 AM. My stomach and intestinal tract were moving so I hopped on the toilet. I HAD to go at this point and it hurt a lot but I pushed hard and I had a hard stool that made me scream passing it but luckily as soon as that was out, everything just came out loose. I was never so happy to have a loose, watery, stool in my life. I was done quickly and I felt so much relief. I've stayed on the Colace, and I make sure I'm getting 50 gms of fiber throughout my day along with drinking a ton of water. I've had soft BM's now 3 days in a row with very little pain. Make sure you are using a stool softener and drinking ALOT of water.

If your swollen "like a clover" than I'm assuming you had external hemorrhoids. They are normally removed at the 3 o'clock, 7 o'clock, and 11 o'clock position, which resembles a "clover". If that's the case, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. It's going to take time for those wounds to heal. Swelling is to be expected. Jump in the tub or use a sitz bath after a BM or when you have pain. It'll help immeasurably. It was the only thing that took away 90%+ of my pain almost immediately.

If you still are having problems with constipation and your drinking a good amount of water and getting enough fiber, you might want to see about taking "Colace" once a day. It's safe for long term use, unlike Dulcolax, and it might really help you. I never took it prior to this surgery, but it seems to work really well for me. I may stay on it if after I'm fully healed, I'm still having issues. I also find a bit of caffeine in the morning really helps me "go".

As far as my recover, it's 2 weeks and 1 say, and it's alot slower than I expected. I usually heal pretty quickly, but these wounds just seem to really take a while. I'm not jn pain. Having BM's don't hurt much, as long as I take the Colace which keeps your stool soft. You definitely DO NOT want to have large or hard stools with this recovery, even 2 weeks post surgery. I am doing quite a bit. I've worked out now for a solid week (weights). My only problem is I can't do much cardio. In fact, I had such a rash last night from walking alot mowing the lawn and raking the leaves it was killing me. These wounds still bleed, although less than last week, and ooze this watery substance like when you get burned. This on my skin and walking a lot gives me a bad rash between my legs. It's my own fault for doing too much, but I can't help myself. But it seems to set me back a bit. I have a good day, so I do a lot of stuff. But than by that night, I'm feeling it, and do the following day, I can't do anything. But than the next day, because I rested, I feel good, so I do too much, and the cycle continues. As my wife says "I have no sympathy for you. Your doing too much and you continue to do it over and over again." She's right. But that's my personality. I'm always "busy". I cannot sit still.

But overall, this has definitely NOT been anywhere near as bad as I expected. I never had pain levels above say 6 or 7, and even that, was really only two or three days, day 4, 5, and 6. It's been alot more of an inconvenience because it gets irritated. I'm going back to work on Monday, irregardless of how I feel. If need be, I'll work 2 days, take a day off, for the next week or two if needed.

Lastly, I never knew that that "pinkish tissue I had outside my anus was" mucousal tissue" as I've lived with it my entire life. But I've ALWAYS, EVERY SINGLE DAY, had to use some kind of creme, like Eucerin, down there or I'd get a rash within 30 minutes of walking. I hated it, but I had to do it. I never had any leakage or anything like that. But this tissue is extremely sensitive, and now I know, was never supposed to be outside. My surgeon removed all this tissue and that's where I have this deep wound that's been the worst part of the surgery. But I'm looking forward to once it heals, hopefully never having to have to use creme anymore like a normal person. I know this was caused by my birth defect, imperforate anus, but it should've been fixed as a child. I had 3 surgeries down there as a newborn. One immediately after birth to create an opening/anus, and than two more a few months later to fix everything and make it as normal as possible. Unfortunately, my surgeon told me I still require several more surgeries as he wanted to be conservative and only remove the hemmoroids that were causing me issue's now as well as the prolapsed mucosal tissue, but there's more that needs to be removed. But because of this birth defect, he said I've got some issues down there and if he gets aggressive and removes too much, fecal inconvenience could very well be an issue and I want no part of that.
