Horrendous

Hi, I’ve started with hives a few weeks ago now.  My first symptom was a swollen lip then the rash came.

My doctors think it could possibly be a side effect to my blood pressure tablets, ramipril - has anyone else experienced this? I’ve been on 2.5mg daily for over a year.  They have since the rash changed them twice so I’m hoping this new one works!

Anti histamines are not working, I am now trailing pritze at night, last night was the first night and I’ve woken up with my legs covered in these awful red marks which will merge and burn me by the end of the day.

I have been looking into it and the majority think hives are food related, so I need to changed my diet too and see if that works.

Never have I felt pain like it, it is quite depressing to read that it can go in for years, I just need to sort it out and get rid!!!

Any advice/help would be appreciated.

Hello Mary, I took Ramipril for a while, I forget how long but developed a cough.  Another known side effect & I was taken off it.

I think you may need a short course of oral steroids - Prednisolone.  This would knock the rash on the head.  You may need to follow up with a potent steroid cream for a little while.  These will help you & wouldn't be needed for the long term.

    Good luck

Hives are worse than ever this morning, covering me.  I even have one on the palm of my hand.

It can’t of been the ramipril as surely it would be getting better now and not worse.

I have a doctors appointment in a few days is there anything specific I should be requesting, other than what MrsMop has already advised?

    Thanks

In the past I've had allergic reactions to medication but I took antihistamine, stopped taking the pills and it cleared up. This last happened 10 years ago when I tried HRT. But 3 years ago I had a bout that lasted 7 to 8 weeks and again early this year another flare-up lasting 12 weeks. Completely unexplained. Both times I was really bad to start with, hives all over and swelling (angioedema) to face, head ,neck and hands. I was prescribed steroids which are very effective but can't be used long term. I would strongly recommend a tapering dose. Eg 6 tablets for 3 days, then 5 for 3 days etc. I took non drowsy antihistamines, cetirizine or loratadine. If you take chlorophenamine (the one that makes you drowsy) take it at night. I treated myself by exceeding the stated dose taking 1 in am, another at midday and another before bed. Some people also take Zantac, ranitidine which apparently has anti histamine. But the point is both times there was no physical cause. People will say oh it's something you ate or due to washing powder!I think mine is stress related. I suggest keeping a diary. I didn't first time and regret this as nothing to refer back to. I'm aware that it may well return sad I hope you get this under control. I know how you must be feeling x

Oh and if you're in the UK buy your antihistamines in Lidl, cheapest place.
