Hot and stabbing pain around incision area and operated buttock / thigh

Hey, Hippies...I've taken a break from the laptop, as we moved one week before my THR and althought I'm trying to be zen about it all...the disorganization is driving me batty. Meanwhile, I did make some great leaps in healing over the past handful of days, primariliy due to my adding a private PT to the mix. However, since this aft I've had this horrible stabbing, hot pain around my incision (lateral but slightly posterior), in the operated buttock and down operated thigh. Incision shows no sigh of infection or redness. Skin isn't red, but it is a bit swollen and warm/hot to the touch. I'm seeing the surgeon on Tuesday (I moved up my 6-week post-op visit because of other things). I'm 24 days post-op. Just wondering if anyone has experienced this, really. And, Graham...I remembered to check the website. : )  I don't find using the search engine on this forum particularly productive or useful. But the people are AMAZING.

Hi Skidget!! Did you ask your Physical Therapist to show you the proper way to massage your scar/incision? I was a bit shocked, 3 months post op, when he said I should have been doing it 3 times a day. Mine, took me in a private room and discretely showed me the technique. I think you could probably find the same info online. This might be something you can ask about as a possible cause of the pain. I have one spot. Just one. Right above the hip joint, at the incision that also causes stabbing pain. Enough to say "ouch" out loud ( alone, to myself ) Actually on the 23rd I was 4 months. Everyone takes different amounts of time to become totally pain free, 3-6 months is normal. You seem to be doing amazing.

I never thought of that scar causing such pain! Amazing insight, thank you! I've been avoiding touching (and...looking...ugh!) at the scar except when necessary and it doesn't look ready for touch, but...egads, I'm so new!  : )  The staples, I think, were taken out a few days early (despite being right on the text book two weeks schedule) and the staple marks and mid incision line itself have been red since. I'm told by others (PT, Mom) that it looks just fine. The staples really, really stung coming out, and that sting never really went away - just ebbed and flowed, really. I have some amazing oil from my BFF that has a sesame seed oil base and is infused with beautiful healing oils, as well as BioOil on hand. I see the surgeon and my PT tomorrow so I'll be sure to ask about the incision massage.  Wonder if this is related to the fascia (she thought aloud)...? Scar tissue therapy is generally overlooked by health professionals because the extent of physiological effects scars can have on the body have never really been acknowledged. As massage therapists, we know that the slightest restriction in the elaborate matrix of fascia can have major repercussions from one end of the body to the other."

      I'm on it!

Just found this!!! you are awesome!

The pains would be nerve endings coming back to life, but a swollen and red would sounds to me like it's asking for attention. You don't want an infection getting hold of you!

No redness, but some swelling has come back (go away!) and, oy, the pain (took my second hydromorphone since coming home, just to get to sleep last night!). The pain endings (and scar/fascia info above) make total sense. Thank you, Annie!

    Hi Skidget

Goodness, I feel for you - I too had to move (by myself ... boohoo) right before 2nd THR - Oh, the pain !!! and the disarray -- but got through it and so will you wink

So interesting that noone told me about massaging the scar area either until it strated to hurt - pulling, stabbing etc ---- but to be honest, even now, so many moons post op from 2 THR's I still feel the zippers alongside my hips -

    Give it some TLC Skidget

    good luck

    big warm hug

Renee, I moved by myself in October when Hubster and I split, OMG, the PAIN in my hips (both hips have been on the surgery list since last August).  This last move was WITH HIM!  Yes!  The house sold last December but we reconciled the first week of January and moved out of our separate apartments to our first condo (no stairs) - literally five minutes from signing the divorce papers. It's been something out of a romance novel! Speaking of which...there could be a book there...that would pay for some of these treatments...but I digress!

Isn't it crazy how much info we aren't told?  I mean, this is such a HUGE health ordeal; like Graham mentioned earlier, not the "walk in the park" the health professionals lead you to believe. And then...omitting or forgetting to mention crucial healing info?  Crazy, man.  Crazy.

I am grateful for you folks every day. Blessings!!!

    Skidget,

Glad you are using my website - any comments or suggestions are welcome.

Search on this forum isn't very useful is it - don't know why. I seem to get better results using google, and including 'Patient dot Info' in thesearch string.

At under 6 weeks, you are still in the early stages of recovery, try Luvinlex's suggestion of massage, using Bio Oil.  It worked for me, it de-sensitises the area, and helps break down the scar tissue inside the body.

I'm on it frequently! And I thank you again for putting labour of love together the benefit of everyone else. I am looking into the massage/oil aspect tomorrow with the surgeon and PT...I am SO squeamish about this. Ugh.  Time to toughen up there, I suppose!

Maybe this scar/pain issue is something that you may be interested in adding to your website? Seems to be pretty prevalent, and, not mentioned by the THR health folk.

Also, heat rash (from sleeping incessantly on the back) could be a new topic? That's been a major problem for me, since I'm one of the many who can't sleep on my sides whatsoever yet. I tried aloe vera gel, almond oil, and others (can't remember now) initially; nothing was working. The itch was making me scratch my back raw. Then I used some hydrocortison cream that I had left over from something or other last year, morning and night, with a coat of aloe vera during the day - and that, after days, seemed to help. But one can only use the hydrocortisone for 5-7 days. So two nights ago I tried Gold Bond powder (on a whim...remembered the commercial from the 80's & 90's) and it's been the perfect rememdy. Am still adding a layer of aloe vera during the day. And just like the pure pleasure and joy of the first post-op shower...I cannot wait to sleep on my unoperated side!
