Hot flashes and sweating

Hi All

Have been weaning of preds and now down to 4mg.  At the same time my hormone replacement was stopped because of blockages in my arteries.  I immediately started having hot flashes and sweating every hour night and day.  Now not sure if withdrawal from preds or HRT or both?  I am 68 and would have though menopause would be over for me so maybe just a coincidence.  Anyone else have hot flashes etc when reducing preds?

I  am on 7 and a half prednisone and have  experienced hot flashes with  a bright red face from time to time as I continue to taper.  Haven’t been on hormone therapy for many years so no link to withdrawal from that.  I am 68.  The other prednisone side effect is sudden hemorrhages in the white of one or other eye so I look like Dracula.  That also fades with no treatment.

Thanks Ricky...... I am hoping not to become paranoid about this condition and not to put everything down to PMR , this forum helps me to put things in perspective.  But saying that so many symptoms seem to be related to PMR  even my peripheral arterial disease which suddenly appeared some 4 weeks ago with claudication of my lower limbs.

I also had to stop my HRT three months ago due to breast problems and all the night sweats etc came rushing back. I am also reducing pred, was at 4, now at 2 1/2. As the doctors say, HRT does not "cure" the menopause they just Delay it! I have many friends ( those who had initial menapause problems ) who when they stopped hrt it all comes back. I have tried a few natural remedies, currently trying black cohosh, I am desperate for a nights sleep. Unfortunately we just have to go through it.

In my experience the hot flushes would be through withdrawing the oestrogen from your system and not the pred.  I tried to come off HRT in my mid sixties before PMR and the hot flushes were awful.  It's got nothing to do with the menopause, the body doesn't like being depleted from the drug at any age.  Things should get better over time and there are alternative things to help. Good luck.

I had to have my HRT stopped 6 years ago because I had a blood clot in my leg. It was after I discovered bioidentical hormones which were awesome. I had a hysterectomy at the age of 35, and had to stop my HRT at the age of 50. like you I immediately started having hot flashes and they continued unchecked for 5 years. I think they had started to slow down quite a bit when I had to start prednisone. The Hot Flashes I get now are not even a comparison to what I had when I stopped my HRT. My hot flashes are so horribly bad now. I wish they would stop because it drains me. I haven't worn a long sleeve shirt for the last year-and-a-half and I have fans in every room of my house. And this winter I have been known to turn the air conditioner on in my car even when the temperature is 30 degrees outside. If you can find an answer please share it with me. I'm confident these are prednisone hot flashes not hormone hot flashes. My doctor told me that any kind of thing that would actually work to help alleviate your hot flashes would not be good for me to take. For example health food stores in the US sell estrogen in lotion. But that's way too dangerous for you to try giving your arteries being clogged. Hot flashes have also been known to be treated with antidepressants such as Wellbutrin. But I've been taking Wellbutrin for depression for years and it did me no good at all. Good luck to you.

I'm same age and I asked to be weaned off my hrt so went from 2/10 dosage to 1/10 and wish I hadn't asked. Now I can't work out what's happening with menstruation all over the place. Not sure about the hot flushes because I do wake up perspiring profusely but l sleep with the electric blanket on all night because I get so cold otherwise. How did you know your arteries are blocked - have you had a DVT? I ask because I have problems with my veins but the GP never examines me even though I ask him to at least look at my legs. Its as if he's embarrassed.

HI porgi I can relate totally to your hot flushes.  I live in South Africa and temperatures at the moment are in the 30s. Centigrade.  Not easy.  I was referred to a vascular surgeon after my GP had a Doppler ultrasound done on my legs which showed that there was thickening in the  arteries in both legs.  The vascular surgeon then did an angiogram with the intention of putting stents in both lengths to enable the blood to flow through.  Unfortunately I have very long areas of blockages/thickening in both legs so unable to do the stents.  Also not A typical kind of cholesterol blockages more like thin filaments building up in the legs.  So, what now?  I see him on 2 January to path the way forward.  I think leg by-pass surgery may be the only solution.  He would like to know cause, has done  numerous blood tests, all negative.  So for now I keep walking stopping every few minutes, housework difficult as legs ache, etc etc.  wondering if a link to PMR as I have read of case studies in this regard.  Will know more on 2 January when we go through the angiogram results.

Hi Maria I take HRT and I am on 11mg of pred I get hot flushes and sweating even though I am still taking HRT. I only have to push the Vacum cleaner around for a few minutes and I am sweating. Housework has to be done before showering.  Keep a fan handy, even when everyone is wrapped up

In  coats scarfs etc I am happy with just a jumper on outside no coat for me. Take care hopefully it will get better. Great you are on a low dosage. I am looking forward to getting there.

I'm really happy to hear that someone has the same kind of heat or sweats that I do. I don't feel so different now.

My hot glows/sweats often return when I go too low on my pred dose and a flare starts to hatch.

For a long time I was hot - certainly the PMR as I wasn't on pred - and that continued for a long time, sat in summer clothes in the depths of winter, no socks because OH likes the heating up high. Then suddenly a couple ofyears ago I was cold, needed pullovers and socks again! Last winter I was back to hot again. I suspect the PMR had burnt out for a while as I had also got my pred dose really low - and then it flared. Boo!!!

I have had the most awful hot flushes with pred, but they do seem a lot better since I have reduced the dose.
