Hi , can anyone help me please. I had a hysterectomy 2 weeks ago, had everything removed. I have started to get hot flushes, and feeling light headed. Can the hot flushes come on this quick? 😀

Hi, my symptoms started almost immediately. Its hard to work out what is going on at first as its all a new experience. I didn't feel informed enough about the extreemes of the menopause by the surgeon from what I'd read most seem to be on the moderate scale. I had terrible hot flushes and took Clonidine at 1st which helps with the hot flushes but they made me extremely tired and I couldn't cope with that.
Since then due to Vaginal Atrophy I've trialed quite a few Hrt with various success but I seem to have very low eaostrogen compared to some others. I found natural remedies did little to help my specific symptoms unfortunately but are definitely worth giving a go.
Hopefully you will get by without the need for Hrt though. Remember not to overdo things in this crucial recovery time you're heal better in the long run :-)

Yes - I went into some kind of hormonal shock immediately after surgery, became a nightmare for the Dr's and nurses, don't think they had seen that reaction so quickly, end result is they kept giving me HRT ended up being 1200mg before they gained some control.
Sweating you will understand but mine was like a waterfall.
I became so dehydrated it became really dangerous and then they coudn't keep veins open for drips, still remember I had 17 needle sites for those damned drips that would give up before the nurses left the room, specialist senior nurse from cancer ward was called in and she eventually found a deep vein that stayed open for days.
10 days in hospital, and then sent home with instructions work with your regular GP to get off that HRT, every 3 months found a lessor dose that worked for me, and stepped down slowly over 2 years or so.

That sounds like a nightmare, were there any other symptoms apart from sweating? What dose do you need now to control the symptoms? I've found the GPS very reluctant to give high doses but after seeing the Specialist they have relented.

I only use a suppositry now to maintain tissues down below, nothing else at all.
Dr's tell me I don't need it apparently your ovaries are not you only source of ostergeon or so I am told, and my bone density is in the normal for my age range.

Thats reassuring maybe mine will reduce with time. So far the symptoms have just returned.
Glad to hear your OK now. It's definitely not what you expect everyone told me it was the best thing they ever did. But its not always straightforward for everyone.

Tracy - it will get better, as your body adjusts, still very early days yet.
And it was the best thing that happened to me, very scary to be told I needed a hysterectomy urgently, after I had been complaining to Dr's about not being able to leave the house during periods, due to heavy periods, crazy heavy, had even had a D & C a few months previous, and told nothing wrong.
Eventually had a period where during the night soaked myself and the the bed, urgent trip to hospital where they gave me 3 units of blood to bring me back to close to normal, my lips were blue I had so little blood circulating.
That period never stopped, I just kept bleeding, alot, glad to get the surgery done, and really rather relived it was all over.
My life has improved out of site since, sister/sibling who had something similiar happen to her said ain't freedom great, let alone the savings in sanitary products.

Hi tracy,
Im 5 weeks post Total Abdominal Hysterectomy and my surgeon said much the same as yours but asked me to see my gp at 6 weeks regarding the HRT.
I too am suffering with hot sweats, insomnia and nausea. I have lost about a stone as i have no appetite.
Mu surgeon advised prior to me leaving hospital to allow my body to adjust before going on hrt, but after reading so many different ladies experience's its hard to know whats best for you and i am still wondering if i could try and manage without HRT.
I hope you feel better soon, its such a hard journey i have found post hysterectomy and i wish you well.

Zoe - your surgeon doesn't know what he is talking about, if you need HRT you need it.
Like I said previously I was put on it immediately after the surgery, on about day 2 if I remember correctly as they could not understand why I was sweating like I was.
I still think they put me on the HRT as a last resort and as an experiment to see if it would work, and the dosage they used was terrifying 1200mg, but it worked, walking the corridor's of hospital by day 8 and 9.
