Hot Flushes caused by Zoladex injections for male prostate .

Posted , 5 users are following.

My husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer 4 years ago. He was injected with Zoladex every 3 months resulting in severe hot flushes which were very debilitating. In view of this he was prescribed Cyprostat which seemed to help but gave him giddy spells. Eventually, 18 months ago he decided to stop the Zoladex injections but still has the hot flushes which have hardly lessened in their severity. Does anyone know, please, how long these flushes are likely to continue? He's getting desperate!

    Hi

following Surgery and Radiotherapy I had two years of Zoladex implants.  The final 12 week implant was in April 2013, so out of my system during June.  My excellent oncologist said the hot flushes should end after approx 9 to 12 months.  Still getting them throughout the day and at least three times a night.

my PSA has been zero for over three years, so on balance the hot flushes are a small price to pay.

    hope this helps

I was diagnosed with Prostrate cancerin 2009. Gleeson scal 9 and stage 4 with 12 months to live. I had 4 weeks of radiation and Zoladex every three months. Yes I got the hot lushes ad yes it was a pain but i was alive. Last September I was told that the treatment had stopped working and i had another 12 months. Myconsultant putme on Abiratrone which I under stand is around $100 a week. but free to me. The cancer has srunk back and stopped spreading and yes there are side effects Dimabetes 2. Tiredness occasionaly brusing of my arms but guess what im still on Zoladex as well.

In our codition there is a choice put up with the side effect or die. Im hangingon as long as i can.

    best of luck peter

Hi Taffy - your hubby's condition is almost a mirror of mine ! I had 56 sessions of radiotherapy followed by 2 years of 3-monthly Zoladex implants. My last implant was  July 2013 so was effective until October 2013. However, almost 18 months later, I am still having the hot flushes - 2 or 3 during the day and at regular 3-hour intervals during the night. I try to avoid caffeine - taking decaff tea or coffee - but these precautions seem to make no difference.

In answer to your question 'how long are the flushes likely to last' - I'm afraid I have no answer except to say that your husband is not alone

Some research suggests that harmone replacement therapy (HRT) may help, but the downside is that this would promote the production of testosterone and a possible return of the cancer.
