How and where to apply ice

Posted , 5 users are following.

I had a bunion operation yesterday and am now home. Pain not too bad but I suspect I still have anaesthetic in my system. My question is about applying ice to reduce the swelling, I remember being told to do this but I was told so much that I've forgotten exactly what I'm supposed to do! I assume I put some frozen veg in another bag and wrap it in a cloth but where do I put it? I think it would be too painful to put it on my foot.

Thanks for any advice. wink

Hi S frozen peas are great. I wrap mine in a towel, sometimes I used two if it was too cold. Put where you can cope with it, it gets easier to manage the cold. Take it very easy V 👣👣

I ended up with my feet tilted sideways and the ice next to them. What you really need is a refillable icebag - get someone to get one from the chemist for you or buy online. A couple if days after my surgery I bought online with next day delivery and was delighted. You can just put a couple of ice cubes in then a dash of cold water - very lightweight. Also - if you have two, you can have the other sitting filled with cold water in the fridge - bliss!

    Hi SHP

Welcome to the forum, I've found the people on here really helpful!

I had my right bunion removed 3 weeks ago, and my left one removed just one week ago, having them done just two weeks apart.

It's been hard work, no denying, but the intention was to get them both done with as little disruption to my life as possible!

Anyway, the whole ice thing, you will find regular icing is an absolute must! Frozen veg work well, but pleas emake sure to keep the dressing totally dry...so wrap the bags in plastic and apply. The best place will bea round the ankle, I was advised not to put on the actual site of surgery, and even 3 weeks on with my right foot, I still don't put it higher than the ankle. The main things you must do to help speed your recovery is elevate your leg (higher than your heart, if you can - i used a beanbag on the sofa to do this...just having it on a coupe of pillows didn't raise my leg high enough for me) REST as much as possible, and ice for about 20 minutes every hour.

I actually bought proper ice packs online, that come with their own little cloth covers with Velcro straps on. These are much better than bags of veg, and you can get them online from amazon or similar. I also took arnica for 3 days before surgery and for 5 days afterwards, I honestly believe this helped with the bruising.

Glad your surgery went well, and you're not n too muc pain. Days 2&3 were the worst for me, from thereon, it's mre just uncomfy, and throbbing like mad if I don't elevate!

    Good luck with your recovery!

Thanks everyone, I wish I'd found this forum pre-op! It was only lying in hospital for hours that I came across it. I'll look for a proper ice bag, sounds the best way forward and least messy! Please do send the link to your blog fabulousfeet, it would be really useful.

Hi vjl56 I didn't get your message sorry, but I'm glad you liked the blog. To get in touch via the blog one can comment on any of the posts and it pops up in my inbox. Thanks for the feedback. I wish I'd had this forum and a blog like mine to refer to when I was planning/first had my surgery, but I suppose writing it turned out to be a good distraction and part of my recovery - plus hopefully useful for others just like this forum. Hope you are well :-)

Thanks again everyone, I have ordered an ice bag which I hope will help with the swelling. I am also thinking of hiring a knee scooter as I am finding the crutches very difficult, putting my foot on the floor just seems so wrong as well as painful! A beautiful spring day here, I'm hoping I'll feel like getting out in the garden in the next few days.

Hi SHP.....I strongly recommend a knee scooter. It has been a lifesaver for me both inside and outside. I am even doing vacuuming with it and a cordless stick vacuum ! (2 cats in house make vacuuming often essential !!) Have not been housebound since day 6 post op.....it's an amazing boost to the psyche !

Thanks Rena, I have gone ahead and rented one, it should be delivered tomorrow. Now I just have to make sure my husband doesn't see your post as I've told him I'm off house work for a month!

So funny!!!! Yeah I had trouble watching the house get a bit dirty around me - would loved to have had a quick vacuum! Didn't know about knee scooters but I suppose with both feet really I did need to just be off them for a bit. I sat and ate a lot of chocolate :-z

Shp I think you accidentally sent me a blank message? Glad you liked the blog! Today I am trialling a pair of black patent ballet pumps which are quite stiff - eek!

Hi fabulousfeet, if I sent a message it was by accident... Sorry about that, combination of painkillers and typing on a tablet probably! Hope ballet pumps worked out OK

Leave patent leather til waayyyyy down the track - luck I was sitting down most of the day cause I'm a bit sore. Might be a good excuse for some new work shoes?!
