How are hysterectomys done now

I have just been told today that I need a Hysterectomy, just wondering how they tend to do this now (yes I should have asked but coudn't wait to escape lol), can they do it keyhole now?

    Can be done by

    keyhole/Laprascopic

    Vaginal

    Abdominal with a bikini line or vertical cut.

    Think it depends on your circumstances. I'm 11 days post abdominal hysterectomy. Would've liked a Laprascopic hysterectomy but I had  large fibroid and didn't have a choice .

    I'd choose laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery as less invasive than open surgery or vaginal .... Get a few different surgeons opinions before you decide on what to do as some only provide open surgery - and choose what's best for you - it's your body and your choice and you have to be happy with surgeon and see if they use any adhesion barriers also - have your questions written down and ask the surgeon and be crystal clear on operation and recovery - it's a BIG operation and you need to be in the right frame of mind for it plus if everything is being removed (uterus, ovaries etc), you will go through the surgical menopause if you haven't gone through the menopause yet and it's can be very difficult so you may need to discuss HRT also to help with it. Get the facts before surgery and cover all corners...

      Thanks for your reply, I am 61 so already gone through menopause I thought all this had gone away when that happened but no such luck.

      I have seen a consultant who says I may need a hysterectomy along side some other surgery to repair another issue. I am totally bewildered by it all and would like to get a further opionion - is this possible as an nhs patient ?

      any advice is gratefully received

    hi phoebewhite, i had a vaginal hysterectomy due to fibroids causing a prolapse, had it done tues 23rd sep and came home thursday 25th, i feel really good just a few cramping pains, Iglad i wasn't cut, They told me to take things easy and i should ake a full recovery, My friend was cut and she is in agony, but i suppose it depends on the individual, And i have lost some weight (bonus), Good luck sue

      Thanks Sue, I am still waiting for my appointment to come through, I don't think they can do anything yet as my Hemaglobin level is still very low, I want it done as soon as possible though.

    I had robotic on October 1st.  The device is called Da Vinci.  It helps the surgeons be more precise and is less invasive than laparoscopic.  The recovery period is shorter and there is a lowered incidence of the doc having to switch to open surgery in the middle of the procedure.
