Hi Andrew I was on sertraline for 2 years, started on 50mg and I had severe anxiety and side effects for nearly two weeks! I went back to gp and they put them up to 100mg,I thought I would be worse but actually everything settled down. A year in I had a blip and was raised to 150 mg and I settled again. I decided to cut back down to 100mg and was doing well for 76 months then had another blip with same side effects as you, I have changed my meds again now after two years as they stopped working for me. The good out weighed the bad. I would stick with them for a while but if it gets too bad with the side effects go back to the gp. X

My side effects of anxiety, headaches, feeling twitchy lasted for over a month, and also constantly tired. Had a very tight chest too. My gp had warned me properly about the side effects, and as I already occasionally had palpitations said I may feel like I was having a heart attack, I wasn't, and wasn't to worry. So I just got on with it. 2 months later I elected to go up to 100mg daily, but side effects have settled down. Yes, it does play with your eating and sleeping, but I just accept that as it does help greatly with the depression. Take it with food to stop nausea, and you can bite the tablet in half and take half in the morning and half at night - this works for me.

PS Andrew, as your anxiety is so closely connected to losing your father, I would pressure your doctor for bereavement counselling - that would help you far more with dealing with the issues and trauma that are affecting you. x

Get some counselling - more effective for specific issue related issues. You will come through this.

Keep strong Andrew, when your feeling low it does feel like the end of the world and you can't always see a way out but as time goes by you will get stronger each time. Anxiety and depression is a cruel disease and unfortunately not everyone understands how difficult it is x

    Hi Andrew

You just gotta stick with it. I know what it's like. Had it all too. I know that 'it's never gonna end' feeling but trust it does!!!! The bad seems real bad now but it simply won't last, just weather the storm. This drug works but in simple English it takes time and that initial period is horrendous. A month ago I was where you are now and today I'm on holiday relaxed with a beer. I can hardly believe it but it's happened abd it sounds like my lows where worse than yours!!

Stick with it and have faith in the drug it works!!!!!!

i second everything that people are saying on here, for me sertraline has been hard to start off with, i've lost over a stone in weight as it messes with your appetite but i'm not complaining about that!! i've got off quite lightly with side effects, i've suffered with the terrible headaches but heard so much worse on here, but it's worth the pain. i feel worry, anxiety and depression free most days, and as i said in my earlier posts, it's changed my life and it WILL change yours :-)
