How bad is not washing/pulling back your foreskin?

So... I was wondering... How bad is not washing your foreskin? I'm a 17 year old guy and haven't watched it for like... 9 years I think maybe a bit less. I never pulled it back since I thought it was scary but the main reason is that it hurts my penis, when I try to touch it to wash it (ever since 9 years ago) It hurts like hell. For 9 years I never had and still don't have a problem with my penis, doesn't hurt, I do my "things" normally and I never get bothered, still... I'm a bit scared that due the not pulling it back and washing inside it may have bad effects.

Hi kimar, do you mean ' not washing underneath the foreskin '? Just to get this right: you are not exposing the glans / head of the penis because pulling back your foreskin causes you pain?  For someone of your age who is not circumcised this is quite common.  It may be your foreskin has remained attached to the head of your penis.  This is due to separate out at the age of puberty, onwards.  When it is painful to withdraw the foreskin this is referred to as a tight foreskin, or a condition known as Phimosis.  If you want you can search the internet for the terms: Phimosis - Tight Foreskin - Stretching - Foreskin Stretching.  Any stretching you try to do should ONLY be done very gently to begin with, then, over a period of MONTHS, you can begin to add further pressure, so that your foreskin begins to move further.  I had phimosis, and I managed to free-up my foreskin to reveal the entire glans, but, for you, this may be relatively easy to achieve, or if your foreskin is quite well attached to your glans, it can even take years of consistent effort.  Read the stuff on the internet on this and update your discussion here, if you want anymore guidance.

For information on washing your penis there is quite a good NHS page that details the relevant issues: search for:  Live well - How to keep a penis clean

We are usually prevented from posting external web links on here, this is why you need to do the searches yourself .... God Luck - W.D.

It's not always bad, people forget that the penis, like the vagina, is self cleaning and generally does not require a lot of maintenance unless you have a special health issue. It can cause health issues if you don't give it a hand every once in a while though. Do what wee-man said and if it's painful to touch the glans then you need to work on desensitizing those nerves by slowly causing discomfort- your nerves will start to become more tolerant of anything that bugs it smile

I'm cut, so I respond 'gingerly.'  However, I think your instincts are correct... the potential for 'bad effects' is real, and plus, I think you need a professional opinion about why it hurt like hell.

Take care of it... it's the only one you will have!  Any embarrassment you may feel discussing this with a doctor or clinician will only last a few minutes.  The resulting peace of mind will be well worth it.

It hurts because it's never been exposed to anything but the protective coating of your foreskin. As long as it doesn't swell up or cause discomfort you should be fine, just keep cleaning it as much as possible. I am a urologist and I agree you should be seen, but the emergency of this situation is not a high risk condition. What you are going through is very common.
