Waiting for a date for my hip replacement and just wondered how bad was everyone's pain after the epidural wore off.... On a scale of 0 to 10 what was yours how long did it last and what is offered as pain relief afterwards and does it make you feel ill.... Any input appreciated

I opted for a general but next morning actual pain was pretty low...drip has morphine but by the afternoon just taking paracetomol, ibuprofen and tramadol every 4 hrs or so....out of bed in the afternoon, on zimmer to loo, sitting in chair, day 2 walking up corridor on zimmer, day 3 up and down stairs on 2 crutches...then home...little pain by then just an ache at surgery site but no joint pain....now 5 months I think and hardly know I've had it done..except no pain and no limp! You'll be amazed !!

Take the regular painkillers as offered. The idea is to keep the painkillers at a level where you dont feel much discomfort. They dont want you to wait until it gets too bad.

Hi, I'm on my 3rd replacement in 5 years all my ops have been done under a general and epidural but with the last two they have left the epidural in for 2-3 days after to help with the pain.  This has been brilliant and coming off the epidural has given me no pain, in fact I've only taken paracetamol.  I have taken liquid morphine at night but this is more to help me sleep that to ease pain.

Good luck, everyone responds differently and if there is one thing I've learnt in my experience it not to suffer in silence.  If you want more pain relief ASK for it - don't wait till the drugs round.

I had spinal only and was in hospital overnight, i was fine the day after surgery so they released me.  Pain following surgery was not bad at all with me, i was on oxycodone for the first week then i stopped, i was not in pain and had no need for it.  Surgery recovery is quick enough however, the entire recovery process after that is another story...lots of ups and downs for several months to finally reach a stabilization stage - which is where i find myself now after 16 weeks...good luck with your surgery

"Pain following surgery was not bad at all with me, i was on oxycodone for the first week then i stopped"

Umm, I think the oxycodone is what kept you pain free that first week, no?

Maybe but i only took one pill a day and only when i felt it was necessary.  Even my PT thought it was incroyable.

Where I was the staff were brilliant I would ring when required more pain killers. Even though I took what they offered on drug round. They never said I could not have any

I had spinal then oxycontin & paracetamol. They kept coming round and asking if I needed a top up for my pain to which my reply was 'What pain!'.  The only unpleasant bit was the first few times you got out of bed - if it is a bit sore before the physios arrive then get a top up 30 minutes before hand. For me it died down a couple of minutes after I got on my feet.  I can't take Tramadol or codeine so did 'step down' meds on diclofenac + paracetamol.

diclofenac is an excellent drug! That is what I used to combat the pain for 3 years with my tendonosis. Actually I REALLY LIKE diclofenac gel/cream. I would rub that ito my leg and it really took the pain away. Works on knees also. Doesn't last long but it does significantly reuce the pain in the immediate area where you apply it.

I'm still not entirely sure what the difference is between epidural and spinal, I was 100% certain I was going to opt for a general but was gently talked into a spinal and never looked back! I was heavily sedated as per my wishes but the recovery post op was so much eSier than a general x

    hi

best part of the epidural you dont have any pain for at least 1 to 2 hrs after the epidural as wore of as your legs is still numb but you also are given drugs inbetween so when its wearing of they make it bearable for you.

also you have a choice of drugs if you have previously took any pain killers before your op you can have or take there drugs wich i was on parocetomol ,codine for times a day

i did have a have pain more so when physyo was coming 1/2 hr before i had a dose of ora morphine helped only 5mils but you must if you do get any pain tell them my pain was about a 2 to 3 after then it started creeping up so they gave me the extra morphine last thing at night it really helped me.

this is to keep on top of it till it wear's of some people don't always get pain after there surjury but i did it all depends on the indiviual  they will give you pain killers 4 times a day take it as you may have good days and bad especially when you go home.

this is were i have gone down hill i just can't bend my knee i go back next week for my check up physo cant get it to bend either don't worry you might not suffer this  im 8 week post op also my op was the second in 6 months and complicated.

hope you are ok and good luck keep us posted

    Hi Essexmad.

Everyone pain level is different. but taking Morphine, Ibuprofen and Paracetomol  that will help with any pain.

I had my THR done in April and the pain was not bad i was not in any unbearable pain just make sure you take the tablets before any pain started.

Don't wait until the pain gets bad before taking the painkillers.

    You'll be ok!

    Good luck

I had an epidural and the pain after the op wasn't too bad at all.  Ask for the dispersable tablets as they get into your system much more quickly.  You can ask for them to go home with too.
