How do I know if I have scar tissue?

Posted , 6 users are following.

Am almost 6 months post-op, and my knee is crunchy, stiff, and often sore.  The flex doesn't seem to be as good as it used to be (although I stopped going to PT months ago, andI haven't measured it since then), and the knee is really painful when I bend it in any direction other than straight forward and back, and even then it hurts.  I was warned about preventing scar tissue from building up, and now I wonder whether that's what this is, but I have no way of knowing.  Anyone one know?  And if it is scar tissue, what, if anything, can be doe about it?

I have scar tisssue that I'm working on breaking it up. When I bend my knee I can actually feel the scar tissue. It makes a crunchy sound and I can feel it with my hand. The reason I know that's what it is, is because I asked my Dr. what the noise was. He said it can break up but if it doesn't sometimes they will do surgery to break it uo.

You need more PT to get your ROM back before it's too late...  Crunchy and stiff are normal.

When I had TKR nearly 5 years ago they said it would be about a year before I really began to feel the benefits, so you still have quite a way to go.

Have you got another appointment with the consultant who operated on you?

I had an appointment after 6 wekks then after a year then after 2 years before I was completely discharged.

Take care and keep in touch

Thanks Sarah.  I have a similar schedule with my doc.  I saw him after 3 weeks, and then at 6 weeks, and am now scheduled to have another visit on the anniversary of the surgery.

I think u need more pt, very important to get your thigh muscles strong, walking, cycling, pool, what ever pt suggest. Stretching also very important. I'm 11 months po n my rom is 110 n that's pushing it. This is a tough surgery, hang in there, but I think best to listen to your physical therapist, best of good health to you, k p
