How do I know if my problem is my IBS or something else?

Posted , 5 users are following.

I have had IBS for over 20 years now and every so many years it changes a little, like where it was mostly constipation it might change to mostly diarrhea, etc. Also, it can change in severity and so forth. So, my question is...how do I know if it's just my IBS changing or if I have a different problem going on? I don't want to needlessly go through those horrible tests again just to find out that it's just my IBS but I don't want to ignore something that could be wrong with me either. So, has anyone else been through this before?

    Hi,

Most probably it is all about your ibs journey, as it may include such changes by time. However and unfortunately only way to make sure is to see a gastro doctor to eliminate non ibs causes sad Since you are worried again now, this may trigger your ibs symptoms as well. Thus, I suggest see a doctor and eliminate other risk factors. Dont know your age, but if it is over 40 then having a colonoscopy is beneficial.

I am indeed over 40, 45 to be exact. I am definitely considering it. Thank you.

At 45 I am waiting for the 3rd diagnosis in 10 years, I have been told this is diverticulosis, IBS (1st) and now a coeliac test has come back flagged. What does this mean?I don't get the results until next week. Hope you get the answers you need. Good luck.

Unfortunately, I don't know what that means but good luck. I hope you are okay.

I think you are referring to celiac. It is when the body cannot tolerate gluten and ends up destroying the villi in small bowel. It is dignosed with biopsies of small bowel.

But what's the difference between that and IBS in terms of diet, mine is already part gluten free as it is.

IBS can change in severity in response to diet or stress. Worry will make it worse.  The only way of knowing if anyrhing else is wrong, is to have more tests.  If nothing shows, it is likely your IBS. What you are describing sounds lke an IBS flare up.
