How do people dress the wounds?

Posted , 4 users are following.

I’ve suffered with HS since my teens and am now 28. I have very sensitive skin and struggle to find plasters/dressings that don’t rip my skin (which adds to the already painful wound). Does anyone have any tips or advice for an alternative?

I highly recommend using paper medical tape with plain gauze to cover any outbreaks, cuts, or sores. You may have to replace these more often than the heavy duty bandaging products out there but worth it, in my opinion. The adhesive on paper tape is not nearly as strong so it doesn't tear my skin. There is a product that creates a chemical barrier between your skin and the heavy adhesive on bandaging. It's made by 3M, and called Cavilon No Sting Barrier Film. Don't bother looking for it in stores. (Been there, done that!) I found it on Amazon. It's very expensive but works. I save mine for the boils that I have to cover with the waterproof heavy duty bandages. Another tip I actually learned when I was a little kid was to always remove bandages, slowly, and in the water of the bathtub or shower. If that doesn't help loosen the adhesive, try putting a small amount of oil, lotion, moisturizer, or even hair conditioner under a bit of the corner of the bandage. Rub the oil slowly under the adhesive as you slowly lift off the bandage, keeping the oil away from the wound or boil. No matter what kind of "greasy" substance you use, just make sure it doesn't have any alcohol or fragrance listed in the ingredients list or it could burn/irritate. Oh, another tip I just thought of- sometimes off-brands, store brands, or discount store versions of bandages seem to have less adhesive than the brand names. Good luck!

Thankyou, I will definitely have a look at the barrier film and start using the tape instead. I also didn’t realise that cheaper brands for plasters mite be less sticky, good to know! I use coconut oil and warm water to soak plasters off but sometimes the plasters are just too sticky. Thankyou for these tips 😊

The only plasters/wound dressings that stay in place all day for me are fabric elastoplasts for knees and elbows. They’re big rectangles and the fabric is flexible. They are the only ones to stay out on my underarms with all the movement, stretching and sweat in that area, and they’re big enough to deal with larger cysts. Soak it with water to get it to loosen up for removal. I tend to put some anti microbial cream on the cyst first and the combo seems to help draw out the gunk.
