I'm 56 and am scheduled to have combination rectocele/cystocele surgery within the next 2 months and am concerned about what it will do to my sex life. I never have any sensation when my husband and I have intercourse. I had 3 vaginal births years ago and really have a loose vagina and now pelvic floor prolapse. I had a hysterectomy (left 1 ovary) and bladder suspension over 25 years ago. I use Evamist (topical HRT) daily and biweekly Estrace vaginal cream. I'm not currently having pain during intercourse - moderate dryness. I am hoping these procedures HELP not only the PFP but also the lack of feeling during intercourse. My fear is that the r:c surgery might make create pain during sex. Quite honestly - the vaginal/intercourse laxity & insensitivity is my biggest concern. Any advise is appreciated.

Hello rosa. Your medical history is very similar to mine and I had a rectocele and cystocele repair 6 years ago, I'm now 63. There is every chance the repair will help the laxity and insensitivity you mention and most good urogynaecologists are very sensitive to this issue. You should discuss this with your consultant and don't be embarrassed because I can assure you he's heard it all before. Following your operation your vagina will feel tighter and although it won't stay the same a nip and tuck during the operation will help. You are doing everything right, using HRT cream will prepare you well, apart from pelvic floor exercises I can't think of anything else you should be doing. Performing the exercises won't help the prolapse but they will help strengthen the pelvic muscles.

Matron,
Thank you so much for your relpy and encouragement. It helped knowing that we have similar histories and that you've had good results. That eases my mind tremendously!! I purchased Lelo Luna Beads a few weeks ago and am trying to use them to strengthen PM.
Again, thank you!!
Rosa

Hi Rosa!
I just say that I had hyst + cystocele op one year ago and I have never had better sex than since the op. Now I'm 14 days post rectocele op and I hope it will be the same this time!
If it is your only concern, please, don't be worried.
The doctor makes your vagina narrower in the op, and both you and your husband will feel much more.
It is true that the first sexual intercourses could be a bit weird cos there is a change in the vagina. But I'm sure that after 2 or 3 times you won't believe how you are enjoying.
Hugs !
