How do you bulk out your poop?

Posted , 8 users are following.

I hate to have to ask this but it’s not the kind of question I feel comfortable asking randomly throughout my every day!! But how and what can I do to bulk out my poop?

I have regular rumbles, grumbly, popping bowels throughout the day and in the evening I am really gassy.

I usually only go once in the morning but it’s always around a number 5 on the Bristol stool chart, usually small, easily passed, soft, raggy pieces and it’s driving me insane with worry because I have it in my mind that a normal healthy one should be like a smooth sausage (which I almost never do!).

My gp has given me Fybogel but I’m reluctant to take it as it contains aspartame which my stomach does not like.

And I am frightened to take anything harsh as I don’t want to give myself diarrhoea.

Ive tried adding things like oats into my diet but it makes no difference.

Any suggestions for gentle foods\products which may help?

Thanks.

    Hi Ruby!

Have you tried eating an apple with it's skin? My husband was having all kinds of issues with his bowels since going on new medications, and had trouble even with his colonoscopy prep. Doc suggested Miralax to keep him "going" regularly following his colonoscopy, but the Miralax seemed to stop him up! I suggested APPLES. They always help me if I have issues -especially after surgery. Try Red Delicious apples, and be sure to eat the skin. Red Delicious has a more substantial heavy skin which adds to the bulk-producing wonder of these awesome fruits!

Ruby Oats are only one types of grain to eat that will bulk up your stools. Potatoes also help to bulk up stools

Wholemeal Breads are good, the best breads contain multi geains they provide your diet with bulk. Generally White bread has had all the goodness taken out and replaced with various additives that put back goodness, without the roughage. Fruits can also help, with most eat the skins etc, like apples. In the winter we sprinkle Bran into our Porrage, that gives roughage. Have a look in shops like Holland and Barrat, they can advise and they sell dried fruit etc that can can replace sugar, we have several dates in our cereal and other dried fruits like prunes and figs. Figs are very good for frequency.

If you are going regularly, I wouldn’t worry about it.  I rarely have a smooth sausage either. Often I only go once a day.  Stools come in all shapes and sizes. Don’t consult the Bristol stool chart because that will make you more anxious.  Everyone has different bowel movements.   As long as you are not having protracted periods of not going to the loo or having diarrhoea, you should just relax.

However, it is important to have enough fibre in your diet and you can do this with eating oranges every day or drinking prune juice.  I do agree with you regarding aspartame.  It isn’t natural and I do everything possible to avoid it.  However, if I accidently take anything with aspartame in it, it doesn’t affect me.

    Thanks all for replying.

Im going to tweak my diet see what happens. Thing is I absolutely love things like whole foods:- apples, figs, whole meal foods I adore them all but unfortunately I have such a sensitive gut those sort of things really play me up. I’m going to have to experiment, maybe try very small amounts and work my way up, see what happens?!

And a note to self:- stop looking at the Bristol stool chart ☺️

Hi, Chia seeds are high in fibre both soluble and insoluble, about 1 tablespoon full contains about 3 to 4 grams, if you soak about 4 to 5 tablespoons full in 250 mils of water for 30 minutes stir it a few times it becomes glutinous, then put some of this mix in to another glass of water put in some orange juice etc for taste, it very easy to drink, check this out online about Chia seeds, they may help to bulk up stools.

Try to  slowly to add more fiber in your diet, like green's salad's and fruit, this can bulk your stool.
