How do you find a good eye doctor/surgeon?

How does one find a good, reliable eye doctor or ophthalmologist?

For one thing it usually takes weeks (at least) to set up an appointment with somebody. If you find out you don't like that doctor, you have to find another doctor, set up another appointment, and wait some more ... not to mention having to pay a good amount of money for each meeting. Is there a better way? Thanks in advance.

In the US I rely mainly on  independent on-line reviews.  Google, Yelp, WebMD, Healthgrades, etc.  Where I live there are certain facilities/large practices/hospitals that have good reputations, I try to stick to those.  How many people will you personally know that had the same surgery you need?  Probably not many.   On-line reviews are the most useful for finding doctors, hair stylists, restaurants etc..

Thank you eggtimer. I haven't given up on the surgeon I started with ... yet. The facility I went to supposedly has a good reputation. Sometimes I wonder how much the fear inside of me might skew how I look at things.

Hi egg timer - I generally agree with your comments.  For restaurants trips etc I have found lots of good tips advice and reviews - all very helpful to me personally as I live to travel and find a good restaurant. However for medical procedures I haven’t found that to be true - although that’s where I started my research.  Whereas people are happy to share their good (as well as bad experiences) for the leisure things in life I found there to be more negative than positive reviews on the medical reviews. Admittedly I live in Canada so perhaps the USA is different.  And websites from companies that perform these procedures are all skewed to make it look like the greatest thing since sliced bread (just search lasik or clear lens exchange places).  They certainly won’t be relaying the bad luck stories - but before having the procedure tou’ll Be signing away your life absolving them from liability.

Even this forum on cataracts most start posting here once something goes wrong.  There is the rare review of someone who posted here researching for their cataract surgery but by and large more of the posters are those that came after the surgery looking for advice or help on something that went wrong.
