How high is your bed?

Posted , 9 users are following.

I have decided to sleep in a single bed in the spare room dowstairs after my op; but this bed is not very high; if I add another matress, is it going to be ok?

Does anyone know how high a bed must be to be safe after a hip replacement?

I know chairs must be at least 18-20 "

Thank you!

I think it all depends on the length of your leg from the back of your knee to the floor.  Mine is 16.5",  My bed is about 21.5" from the floor to the top of the mattress.  Just make sure your bed is not lower than the measurement of your leg as above.  I had someone come round to provide chair and toilet raisers etc.  Perhaps the hospital could advise you whether you could get bed raisers if necessary

Yes the crucial hight is 19 inchesso you may have to raise the bed up on, say, 4 house bricks, just an idea, not sure what to use really but take the wheels off the bed if there are any, the builders merchants will have some knocking about they migh just give you...Hope that helps.

    Kindregards Ian.

I bought bed raisers off the internet called elephant feet. They are brilliant. They come in 3 different heights and I will keep on using them even when I have had my right hip done because the size I got is just right for me and makes it so much easier to get in and out of bed because of my height. I have turned 1/2 of my lounge into my bedroom any way I didn't want to wake my other 1/2 in the middle of the night if I had to get up and walk about and I still havn't used the stairs yet.

there is not definitive height as its worked out according to your lower leg length as JillEag says. you should have an appointment with occ health prior to your op and they will measure your leg and work out what you need. for me at 5'3" the everything has to be a minimum of 17.5"

I had an appointment with the therapist a few weeks ago, she recommended 20" for chairs and the same for the bed, but the mattress is soft and when I sit it on it it' s not 20" any more.

The therapist should be able to order you a bed raiser as it's only a single.

I was also told that the bed must be at least 17.5 inches from the floor to mattress.

As Jilleag says it depends on your lower leg length. When you are sitting on the edge of the bed you must not exceed the 90degree bend rule so it's just like the toilet! I was measured at my pre op meeting and had to measure bed, loo and chair as well. You had to measure the bed when sitting on it as it obviously sinks down.

    Hi there

I'm like Helen at 17.5 inches high for both based on that formulae....pretty essential for first month anyway. Then I relaxed it to our 15. 5 inches high double bed....much cosier!

Again saying a modicum of common sense needed...and gentle rising and lowering unto bed is equally important!

Hi It is not just the height, I have a memory foam mattress which is too soft to push myself back to swing the operated leg in.  I live alone so got a raiser recliner which I have slept very well in.  Apparently the worst part is sleeping on your back in bed it was not till I tried to get into bed at week 4 that I understood.

I can now sleep in the bed at week 5 with a pillow under my knees.

Good luck by the way at week 4 I could get the bus into town and go shopping havn't been able to do this for 2 years lovely xx

Margaret, what is a "raiser recliner"? I have a a memory foam as well and I love it! I can only sleep on my back at the moment because it husts on both sides, so it will not be a problem for me. At around week 4 I have my son' graduation cerimony, I hope to be able to attend.

Yes, a bed with another mattress should be fine.  I have a bed on the main floor in my spare room, close to a washroom too!

    It will be just fine!

I hope your recovery is short and sweet!.

    Be well.

      Thak you Mary,

I will be downstairs in the spare room, next to the cloakroom which has a shower cubicle...I don't really need to go upstairs, only if I want to.

      Best wishes to you too
