How I cured my gastritis
Posted , 375 users are following.
When I got diagnosed with mild gastritis (but no H. Pylori) and esophagitis, I looked all over the internet to find what to do. I did not find many accounts of people who have cured themselves successfully and how they did it. So I thought I would write my story once I am cured. Here it is. If you have cured yourself from gastritis too, please share your experience below as well.
Many people ask how long it takes to be cured. At first I started on dexilant for a month but I did not see any improvement. After a month I kept taking dexilant and I started the low acid diet in parallel. I got much better in 2-3 days. After two months on dexilant and one month on the diet, I felt completely good. Then I stopped the dexilant cold turkey and got a lot of pain and acidity back in my stomach. Now I regret I did not take the dexilant a little longer as my stomach was obviously not healed and not strong enough to go through the rebound effect of stopping dexilant. I regret also that I did not stop dexilant slowly taking it every other day for a week, then every three days for a week, .... I felt anxious about taking a medication that has so many side effects taken long term and I wanted to stop immediately, which was not reasonable.
Anyway there I was back at the beginning with stomach pain and acidity day and night. I felt pain related to the esophagitis as well which really scared me. I hesitated to take dexilant again but I decided to try to cure myself the natural way. Below I describe what I did. I got cured in approximately two months, getting slowly better week by week. After two months of natural cures I had no stomach pain anymore and no excess acid, I was able to sleep again, felt like a new healthy (and lighter -- I lost a few pounds) person. However after those two months, I felt that I needed to follow the diet another month for my stomach to get strong and be able to handle a less strict diet.
THE CURE
Books
Most of what I did is summarized in two books which I found very useful:
The first book is "Dropping acid: the reflux diet cookbook & cure" by Jamie Koufman. This is the book I based my diet on. The only disagreements I have with the author regard dairy products that I stopped taking as they make the stomach produce more acid (very clear for me), and the use of ginger, manukka honey and aloe vera which I find too irritating and/or acidic (and I don't feel that they help). Also she does not talk about salt which is known to be irritating for the stomach lining in excess, I felt an improvement when I lowered my intake in salt. I will explain the diet more in details below.
The other book is "Ulcer free! Nature's safe & effective remedy for ulcers" by G. Halpern. I know you may have gastritis and no ulcers but the two conditions are related and what cures one usually cures the other too. I used some of the natural supplements recommended in this book. In particular slippery elm (this one is actually not mentioned in the book) and DGL licorice for stomach pain (coat the interior of the stomach lining), Zinc-Carnosine (reduce inflammation and protects stomach lining - I felt a great improvement after starting to take it especially with acid production at night), and cabbage juice (finished my recovery with this one, after two days I had no stomach pain anymore at night). I describe the supplements more below.
What did not work for me
Mastic gum hurts my stomach. It is supposedly helpful against H. Pylori which I knew I did not have (I had been tested).
Prelief removes the acid in food and stomach very efficiently but causes constipation.
Tums works well for 45 minutes but then there is a rebound effect with the stomach producing more acid.
Manukka honey hurts my stomach (Too acidic, Ph level 4, but maybe also because of the tea tree essential oil in it). It is supposedly helpful against H. Pylori.
Aloe Vera is too acidic (around Ph level 4), and I don't feel it is doing anything positive.
Ginger is irritating and I don't feel it is doing anything positive.
Probiotics helps with digestion but not really for the stomach.
Zantac works very well at removing the acidity but makes me feel dizzy and incredibly tired.
PPI worked very well at removing the acidity and pain in my stomach while I was taking it while doing the diet, but I had a bad rebound effect when I stopped (one must stop slowly by taking it every other day for a while). Also having too low acid in the stomach because of PPI might cause problems in the long term (problems with Calcium and B12 absorption, bacterial infection more likely).

But the good thing is that you know that if you avoid certain foods, like pizza, you feel better. If you can stay away from them for a few months, you will feel good again.

What helped me was to stop eating all dairy, including hard cheese (the protein in milk, casein, makes the stomach produce excess acid. Sometimes I would have a little bit grated very thin with the microplane on my food but it is not recommended), avoid almond milk, start dexilant 60 mg (I had to take it for two months only at 60mg, one month at 30 mg and one month at 30 mg every other day. I am finishing the fourth month and I feel good) and eat a big portion of carbs at every meal: preferably rice or potatoes (they are a good buffer). You are right to avoid fat, especially peanut butter, and milk, they made me sick too.
When I was very sick I managed more or less to keep my weight but I did not gain any weight. As soon as I started to get better (mostly because of the dexilant and the diet), I started being VERY hungry, and I gained a few pounds.
If you miss sugary food, you could try maple syrup; it is not great but it is not really bad either.

i have gastroparesis where my stomach doesn't empty kind a normal stomach, I take Domperidone before meals to help move the food, that's my main problem. I take dexilant 60 mg at bfrt and Pepcid 20 at bedtime works good for me, but I need to gain weight. I do a lot of walking to help with my digestion. I think I'm walking off the calories.
Do you have a juicer? For the veggies, can I use bottled juice, I don't have a juicer. I have rice or potatoes just like you and fish and chicken everyday.
what do you do when you go out visiting and you have your schedule to eat, my stomach feels better when I eat light meals, but like I said I need to gain some weight, I'm so skinny,I look like a child.

I also lost a lot of weight very fast few months ago. I had/have a very similar as yours and Ines'. Lately I've been gaining weight because I have a weakness for sweet stuff and thus I usually look for recipes of muffins and cakes, but gluten free, dairy free (vegan or paleo diet recipes) and replacing sugar by either maple syrup, stevia or recently I have been trying coconut sugar. Instead of butter I use olive oil/coconut oil but in smaller amounts than the recipe. I usually look for these recipes in internet. The resulting muffins/cakes are not the tastiest in the world but for my 'sweet' cravings have been perfect, gastritis friendly and I have gained quite some weight. For instance, I just prepared a home made energy bar with quinoa flakes, few sunflower seeds and pecans, very few almonds, coconut oil, coconut sugar, chia seeds and few raisins (before I could not tolerate them, now it seems OK) and use vanilla flavour sweetened with stevia. Also, sometimes I prepare sweet potatoes with maple syrup and have it as dessert. I do not eat fruit with lunch or dinner, so the sweet potatoes have been perfect.
Another reason why I gained weight is because I increased the amount of olive oil. Before, I was eating zero oil to the point I stopped getting my period...so I had to begin to use olive oil, I did it very slowly. I use it mainly with salads and put a bit in other meals, always small amounts. Also I am experimenting with coconut oil and ghee which as far as I understand is gluten and casein free.
Almond milk also causes me problems, but I got me an almond milk cheese which seems to be OK. I just eat a small piece once in a while and a piece of hard cheese once in a while as well.
I've been increasing amount of carbs as well. Somehow I can tolerate only one brand of gluten free crakers (glutino brand) but I've been having trouble finding a bread I can tolerate. Spelt bread seems to be OK and also I got me some brown rice english muffins which do not cause me discomfort. So called paleo diet bread were OK for me but are not that delicious. Be careful with already made gluten free and vegan products, because sometimes they contain ingredients that are not good in our situation, I always always read labels. Lately I've decided to make my own bread...

lady,my biggest problems is my slow moving stomach, I have that gastroparesis, the food moves out real slow, if I over due it's stay full forever.
does it bother you when you eats sugar?would do you drink for a milk product, I've tried them all and almond seems the best. Are the muffins in a prepared box, I feel good eating my foods, but I can't gain weight with this diet. Thanks for your help. What do you do when you travel, that's my biggest problems, cause I hate to sit home, very depressing.
Can you tolerate coffee, I drink homemade ginger tea, and have one cup every morning before breakfast.
any other suggestions you may think of, I'd appreciate.
thanks again.

For milk substitute, I tolerate best rice milk.
When I am invited, I eat a full meal just before going and I take more food with me: another full meal + melon + coconut water + chamomile tea bags.
I apologize to my hosts and explain the situation. Some close friends have also cooked special bland meals for me.
For the juices it is better to make it yourself. Bottled juice are acidified for preservation (with ascorbic acid or lemon juice which are bad for us). I use the breville compact juicer. It costs $100. My best investment of the year!

I gave up buying already made baked goods, or the mixes to prepare them at home. The reason is that recently I was diagnosed with bacterial overgrowth and I have to follow a low FODMAP diet for one or two months. Among others, I should not eat honey, agave, corn syrup, sugars that end in -ol, fructose, inulin, chicory root, molasses. Most of the gluten free brands I've found out there have one of those sugars or other ingredients I cannot eat. I recall there is an ingredient in the Undis brand I cannot eat, but don't remember exactly which one. I've also realized that in fact, some of these sugars cause me discomfort or pain, specially inulin which is found in most organic/vegan brands. The sugars I can eat are: sugar (but very recently, anyways I avoid it whenever I can), glucose, pure maple syrup, stevia. I do use them in small quantities though. Lately I've discovered coconut sugar, which is not that great, it is not that sweet but it's OK. I drink unsweetened hemp milk and coconut milk instead of cow milk. I feel discomfort with almond milk and lately with chamomile tea, but I've been observing my self, I think the problem is the temperature of the tea. The less hot the better.
I used to put on my crackers almond cheese, or a veggan variety of cream cheese or sour cream, but I always always read labels. Sometimes I put maple syrup on the crackers or recently I've been doing my own marmelade, with some fruit I can tolerate (lately I can tolerate blueberries), maple syrup, chia seeds and vanilla sweetened with stevia. I use just a bit on my crackers, it is soo good.
Irene, regarding your gastroparesis I would like to tell you a experience I had at the beginning of my gastritis treatment. I was given metoclopramide (along with Omeprazole) which is also used for gastroparesis. My estomach was emptying so fast, I was always starving, so I was eating a lot of small meals and gained weight quite fast. Perhaps that the reason you do not gain weight is more related to absorption than the gastroparesis itself.
At the beginning I was also having lots of issues when going out, at some point I stopped going out. However, asian food, specially vietnamese turns out to be quite good and less problematic. When I travel, I take plenty of food with me. I somehow got used to it. I have some plastic containers, that I also use to bring my food to work. I bring my home made quinoa muffins, or energy bars, or crackers, my bread with almond cheese, cantaloupe, steamed veggies. Lately I'm tolerating raw veggies, so I bring salad. I do the same as Ines when I'm invited to somebody else's house, I either eat before or bring my food and apologize.
When traveling and my food supplies are exhausted, either I try to find a place I can get some grilled fish, steamed vegetables and baked potatoes, or I look for a noodle house or asian place, and ask for a bowl of soup made with rice noodles and chicken, I point out: no onions, or green onions, no chili, garlic, no peanuts, and I always say to the staff: I am alergic to all that, if you put it on my soup I'll die right here!...quite dramatic, but believe me if you do not point out that, they will bring you a soup with green onions and peanuts.

With no other lab results out of range...especially your absolute mono and lymphocytes, RBC's all within range...probably Gastritis related.
TSH is thyroid....GI did not suggest this nor did our GP...I asked for it anyway and paid out of pocket...results were "HYPO"...meaning low output..added "nori/japanese seaweed" to her diet and re tested 2 months,'thyroid "normal
Stress can cause havoc on everything.
Our stomach lining has literally thousands and thousands of micro cells that produce "enzymes"....absolutely needed for digestion that takes place in the stomach...properly and complete digestion before food travels to the small intestine for further processing. When the stomach lining is inflammed....the production of these enzymes are compromised. The remaining (hopefully) are the enzymes from the Panco and Liver.. hcl and pepsin production from the stomach lining don't seem to be affected. But they cannot do all of the "break down (catobolization) of foods...so without some of the others...its possible chyme goes down without being complete...thus the small intestine may not be able to catabolize some stuff thus non absorption and sent to the colon as waste.
The priority would then seem to be....putting out the fire....and restoring the lining as quickly as possible. A nutritionist that will target this process may be best...In some limited cases, diets that reduce irritations to the lining have had some success...givng the lining an opportunity to heal.
There is one research group that is attempting to build a protocol for mucosal repair...I know the enzymes and the vitamins/supplements but not the forumula nor the process...The main amino is L-Glutamine, so do some research on this to see if you might add it to your juicing for possible benefit....start..smart....no more than 2gm per...initially to see how it goes..(constipaption) about 5% of the time but 5 to 10 gm...body builders use mega gms without any issues. With only juice and exercise...sounds like you might be expending more energy than complete intake? How are you dealing with this?
To answer your questions/s
It became a full time job at different times in my life… as a father of 4, and at age 57 had to rehab my mom who was Voodoo treated at a noted Hospital, and again when wife developed ovarian cancer 4 years ago. ...I'm 77...wife is 60..
Juice....would like to garner some important info from you... please…
1. fruit....juice only/liquid or with it’s other components as well
2. vegetable...same as above
3. what fruit/vegetable do you avoid. (exclude herbs, spices etc)
4. any other info you deem valuable.
Both Chinese and Japanese Traditional Medical practice often use “juicing/herbals” after a “fast”…I consider this something like “digestive rebooting”…Was told “timing” is everything”..
.
In healthy individuals the digestive system can process fruit from top to bottom in 30 minutes.....meaning from the mouth, stomach..dudenum, small intestine, kidney/bladder/colon.
Not pizza... ....take only the cheese first it”s "processed food".
I think fruit juice requires only a very few enzymes to process completely thru the entire digestive system....
but just for the cheese...too many (5,000?) and it requires "sequential" processing......its content is mixed and concentrated…...protein, lactose, fat, sodium etc... all must be catabolized, sterilized , using different enzymes at different PH and at different stages/time…not all of these processes work in harmony…some content may get digested completely, some partially, some maybe not at all…even for healthy individuals.
I’m assuming….the “character” of your digestive system enzyme wise is programmed for Juicing…a new or different food when one has a digestive issue can have serious difficulty getting processed …what’s usually needed is a gradual change in food..very gradual ….An Example, those who cannot do fruit/vegetable …must first put one (1) food piece into their mouth…slowly chew..and take in only the liquid/taste..then toss the balance down the drain, to be done a few times a day for a few days.……that’s kinda slow but it works most of the time….raw foods…not cooked or processed.
I obtained some of this info/practice from my 95 year old Chinese Traditional Medical Dr In China maybe 14 or 15 years ago…and was relative to raw vs cooked foods. Cooked foods were introduced gradually after Homeostasis was obtained with some patient exceptions.
Looking forward to your juicing info…Claudio

I am a similar age to your wife. I have had gastritis/duodenitis for 10 yrs now, and as I am hypothyroid I reckon that is one of the issues for me, as it's now chronic. In fact I think mine is autoimmune.
I do improve my gastritis but unfortunately find it hard to stick to the rigid diet that seems to be the only thing to control it. I am getting help from a medical herbalist now too.
Anyway, I too do juicing as Jayne does, and I alter the ingredients as time goes on. When I am at my worst then I find fruit hard to tolerate, but am not so bad with pears and apples. I seem able to tolerate most vegetables, so I put in carrot, beetroot, cucumber, lettuce, and avocado mostly. Actually it's not a juicer as such, but is a Vitamix. The trouble with juicers is they take out all the good things whereas a Vitamix (or Nutribullet) will keep all the pulp which is good for you, but it reduces it to a v smooth texture.
I also put in ginger, and coconut milk and a little coconut oil. Also seeds and nuts. When my stomach is healed I also add a little cacao.
I am mostly on a Paleo diet, and I find cooked food more soothing on the stomach than raw food sometimes, but I do have both during the day. I suppose it is the warmth that is soothing.
I avoid dairy (mostly though I have butter and a bit of sheep yogurt), grains and all processed food. It's really hard to keep to the diet all the time though especially if I am out or travelling.

you seem to eat a variety of foods that youv e determine are nutritious and tolerated. The combo of greens and a
vocado are excellent for complete digestion..suggest to not add anything else except very young greens. seeds and nuts while tastey are different oils than avocado and
makes the combo a bit more difficult to digest. young greens have less cellulose thus easy digestive. plus thus combo should accelerate mucosal healing.
thanks for sharing ..helpful and informative..claudio

Perhaps I should skip them for a few weeks until it's healed again or eat them with other things. My poor stomach must think it's on a roller coaster as it improves and then gets worse again when I lapse on the diet.
I often have home made soup when I am at my worst too so that I am then having 2 liquid meals in the day, and maybe have solid food for the last meal.

re juicing, mornings I juice apple and raw ginger and blend with spriolina and wheatgrass.
i juice a combination of fruit and veg. More veg than fruit. And generous amounts of spinach, kale and cabbage, mixed in.
then I put in Nutribullet and blend in avocado.
Sometimes i blend fruit juice with yoghurt and banana.
i also make my own soup.
i don't add any other spices.
if I only use Nutribullet for fruit n veg I find it too much for my stomach, as it still has to do some digesting. Whereas the juice goes straight to nourishing me and my digestion can rest.
somedays I only have juices or soups when my stomach feels shakey,
im going back to GP tomorrow to see about WBC.

and yes...its very valuable that others chip in.....Irene suggests B12...agree plus...with fos...sub lingual...if if....
I'm a tad concerned...is your intake of protein only from avacodo, yogurt, and maybe soup? I know there are conflicting studies regarding the relationship between protein and WBC's....I'd err in favor that protein
is necessary for bone health, thus the marrow that makes the wbc ought to benefit.
This is a guess..if the intake of easy digestive protein is adequate....the relationship between gastritis and low WBC's is the lack of complete breakdown of protein.mainly in the stomach where pepsin is the big player, and once in the small intestine...if too bulky...the enzymes cannot catabolize for futher processing. I'll go back to my notes to be certain more than a mere guess.
Do you know what amount of protein in gm's you need daily and are they adequate?
Today....first time in 100 plus years....wife and I breakfast outed...pancakes and saussage....She ate a lot more pancakes than I would have prepared at home...but she ate only 1/2 of her saussage serving...made me most happy....we then went for our usual exercise along the beach...usually not so quickly after a meal...I did my 3 miles but only a walk vs a jog...and she did maybe 2 miles of slow walking and taking pics of the birds/boats/water.......no issues...for lunch will be very light, minimum protein, and all super digestives...will do the Jayne juicing for last meal today using the nutri bullet with limited quantity/volume........Claudio
