How I cured my gastritis

When I got diagnosed with mild gastritis (but no H. Pylori) and esophagitis, I looked all over the internet to find what to do. I did not find many accounts of people who have cured themselves successfully and how they did it. So I thought I would write my story once I am cured. Here it is. If you have cured yourself from gastritis too, please share your experience below as well.

Many people ask how long it takes to be cured. At first I started on dexilant for a month but I did not see any improvement. After a month I kept taking dexilant and I started the low acid diet in parallel. I got much better in 2-3 days. After two months on dexilant and one month on the diet, I felt completely good. Then I stopped the dexilant cold turkey and got a lot of pain and acidity back in my stomach. Now I regret I did not take the dexilant a little longer as my stomach was obviously not healed and not strong enough to go through the rebound effect of stopping dexilant. I regret also that I did not stop dexilant slowly taking it every other day for a week, then every three days for a week, .... I felt anxious about taking a medication that has so many side effects taken long term and I wanted to stop immediately, which was not reasonable.

Anyway there I was back at the beginning with stomach pain and acidity day and night. I felt pain related to the esophagitis as well which really scared me. I hesitated to take dexilant again but I decided to try to cure myself the natural way. Below I describe what I did. I got cured in approximately two months, getting slowly better week by week. After two months of natural cures I had no stomach pain anymore and no excess acid, I was able to sleep again, felt like a new healthy (and lighter -- I lost a few pounds) person. However after those two months, I felt that I needed to follow the diet another month for my stomach to get strong and be able to handle a less strict diet.

THE CURE

Books

Most of what I did is summarized in two books which I found very useful:

The first book is "Dropping acid: the reflux diet cookbook & cure" by Jamie Koufman. This is the book I based my diet on. The only disagreements I have with the author regard dairy products that I stopped taking as they make the stomach produce more acid (very clear for me), and the use of ginger, manukka honey and aloe vera which I find too irritating and/or acidic (and I don't feel that they help). Also she does not talk about salt which is known to be irritating for the stomach lining in excess, I felt an improvement when I lowered my intake in salt. I will explain the diet more in details below.

The other book is "Ulcer free! Nature's safe & effective remedy for ulcers" by G. Halpern. I know you may have gastritis and no ulcers but the two conditions are related and what cures one usually cures the other too. I used some of the natural supplements recommended in this book. In particular slippery elm (this one is actually not mentioned in the book) and DGL licorice for stomach pain (coat the interior of the stomach lining), Zinc-Carnosine (reduce inflammation and protects stomach lining - I felt a great improvement after starting to take it especially with acid production at night), and cabbage juice (finished my recovery with this one, after two days I had no stomach pain anymore at night). I describe the supplements more below.

What did not work for me

Mastic gum hurts my stomach. It is supposedly helpful against H. Pylori which I knew I did not have (I had been tested).

Prelief removes the acid in food and stomach very efficiently but causes constipation.

Tums works well for 45 minutes but then there is a rebound effect with the stomach producing more acid.

Manukka honey hurts my stomach (Too acidic, Ph level 4, but maybe also because of the tea tree essential oil in it). It is supposedly helpful against H. Pylori.

Aloe Vera is too acidic (around Ph level 4), and I don't feel it is doing anything positive.

Ginger is irritating and I don't feel it is doing anything positive.

Probiotics helps with digestion but not really for the stomach.

Zantac works very well at removing the acidity but makes me feel dizzy and incredibly tired.

PPI worked very well at removing the acidity and pain in my stomach while I was taking it while doing the diet, but I had a bad rebound effect when I stopped (one must stop slowly by taking it every other day for a while). Also having too low acid in the stomach because of PPI might cause problems in the long term (problems with Calcium and B12 absorption, bacterial infection more likely).

    Hey,

    I know how you feel I have had Barrett's esophagus for 20 years I to tried everything. The reflux got worse when I was sleeping and found it's way back up to my throat so I used to wake up suffocating (terrifying experience so I had to use more pillows to raise my head. It's been years now since I suffered with acid reflux I used a combination of herbs and diet to cure the acid.     Thanks for Sharing your tips

    I wish I know if erection dysfunction can be one of the side effect of gastric ulcer. I have a friend of mine with ulcers complications and erection dysfunction, he thin they are associated to each other, any one with information???

    hi,

    i know i m replying to an old post. but i m suffering from gastric issues since last two years. it started with lot of bloating and not being able to swallow. i just want to confirm if my symptoms are same as yours. i get burping after eating or drinking anything. then burning sensation in stomach around 1.5/2 hours of eating. i also have burning sensation in my throat. at night i feel bloating and gurgles which feel like intestines are churning. Did you have the same symptoms with gastritis? How was your gastritis confirmed?

      hi - yes I have the same symptoms you have listed. and I have gastritis. as you will see from my message to Inez I have been like this now for almost 6 years.

    I have been having stomach problems since May of 2019 following a bout of food poisoning, lost 7 kg since then but slowly gaining weight. I am posting because reading suggestions here did help me manage symptoms early on in the disease process. I am doing much better now and will share what worked for me. My symptoms were constant nausea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, abnormal stools for a while, dizziness initially. I tested positive for H.pylori in June and took 3 antibiotics for 10 days. My positive result was very low however and I was barely over the reference for a positive test. My symptoms did not really resolve from this treatment. I took osameprazole for a total of 2 months which helped overcome my severely painful flare ups. However I made the decision early on that I did not want to rely on pharmaceuticals.

    Overall what has worked for me:

    • cabbage juice for burning stomach pain is your best friend, I did this and the pain would go instantaneously. Use for flare ups only as I was too lazy to juice everyday.
    • zinc carnosine, after I started this supplement my symptoms never flared up as bad as previously.
    • slippery elm, very good early on, I put it in ginger tea
      • cod liver oil is the only supplement i still take, because it contains vitamins essential to healing the gut, vitamin A, vitamin D.

    I have not taken any of thee supplements in several months, looking back they are great for managing symptoms, however do not address my root causes of gastritis. This is trial and error, as if your cause of gastritis is simply stress, or taking NSAID's you can heal taking the above supplements.

    What helped me the most was a month of experimenting with strong herbal antimicrobials, so I suspect the root cause of my gastritis was gut dysbiosis, or some kind of infection. Over a month I experimented with numerous antimicrobial's whch seem to have worked:

    • black seed oil (anti-parasitic/fungal)
    • very high concentration manuka honey or jarrah honey (anti- h.pylori)
    • olive leaf extract (anti- h.pylori)
    • garlic/ginger pills (excellent for candida)

    Since taking these for a month I'm pretty normal, gained 2kg the last 3 weeks as I wanna gain weight slowly. I eat too much junk food on many days but never flare up. On a good day I'm eating 80% good and 20% bad. The only diet rule I am consistent with is avoiding fried foods. I am too lazy to write about diet but fruits, vegetables and whole food proteins are the best. I try and consume homemade kefir and I did so consistently for a week or two after finishing my antimicrobial regiment, but now maybe once or twice a week.

    The gut takes time to heal but if you have suffered gastritis just know that it will only get better, both mentally and physically. If you try everything and nothing seems to work, a diet and herbs to get rid of infection and gut dysbiosis might resolve it. The reason I did not wish to take anti-biotics is because they are a nuclear bomb to your good bacteria unlike natural anti-microbials.

      Thank you for sharing your experience. I agree the supplements like slippery elm, ginger and honey do seem to help. Also good pre and probiotics to maintain balance.

      i will give these a try. i did take probiotics for a short time but these disagreed with me and i had to stop. i too wish i could get off the drugs but I have not really known where to start. i have had little advice from my GP and all they seem to want you to do is give you drugs. Diet wise it is so difficult having IBS as well as Gastritis and Diverticulitis as there is so much you cannot eat - especially fruit and veg. it is a nightmare and I am open to suggestions.

    What type of aloe did you use? Straight from the leaf? I find straight from leaf irritating for me but i can tolerate george's aloe drink. How are you doing so far in 2020? Still good?

      Did George's aloe help you? I ordered a bottle, but haven't started yet. Do you drink it straight or do you mix it with water?

    I have only today for the first time come across your message and this site. I too have searched the internet but found very little to help.

    i am 74 years old and have been suffering with gastritis now for approximately 6 years, during which time I have been taking the PPI Esomaprazole bd. Over the past 12 months I have also been diagnosed with IBS and mild diverticulitis. and I have a bowel condition and was referred back to my local hospital who just increased my Gaviscon. I am desperate to stop taking this drug and improve my overall health. I had H Pylori apparently 20 years ago and although my doctor says I was treated for it I have no recollection of being given the 2:1 treatment. However I was retested recently and told I do not have it now. There again when referred for a scan they missed the stones I had in my gall bladder and I ended up having it removed.

    DIET

    I like many others do not like taking PPI and I am concerned about the long term effects. My GP has never helped with any alternatives. The difficulty i have with following a diet is that my husband is diabetic and also has diverticulitis.Trying to accommodate both diets is quite difficult. The only guidance I have had is to follow the almost impossible list of foods "not to eat" for gastritis. This does not produce a balanced diet and because you are supposed to eat "little and often" makes life very difficult. So much so that my weight has increased dramatically.

    OTHER SIDE EFFECTS

    I have recently started having gastric symptoms in the early hours of the morning and was really .concerned when I changed dentists to hear that the acid is badly eroding my teeth. I wake with

    mucous on my lips and in my mouth, although this has improved of late.

    TREATMENT

    I too have had problems when taking prebiotics and ginger. I had not heard of dexilant, Zinc Carnosine or DGI licorice but will certainly be giving them a try if I can find them. Thank you for the book recommendations . I have tried others but none of them helped. I will certainly look for these. Are you in the UK? as this is often significant when looking for products.

    Hi everyone. i have been following this discussion for a few years now. i have been diagnosed with IBS. I had an endoscopy about 6 years ago and had several ulcers and was in a lot of pain, couldn't sleep and i was miserable. i went on PPI and zantac and a bunch of other stuff that only provided mild relief. i even took amitriptyline fir a while, which hel ped a lot but i started having heart problems. i switched to a doctor at UCI and he suggested i try IB Gard. it worked! it is over the counter and i get it on Amazon. At first i took it every day but now i only take it maybe once per week. i give it to family members when they have an upset stomach and it is very helpful for them too. i highly recommend giving it a try. It is the only thing that has truly helped me.

      I'm not sure. I think it is a very strong dose of peppermint so you should be able to. I don't know exactly what it is and I've tried peppermint before with limited success. This just works and it isn't a prescription. The doctor I saw at UCI specializes in motility issues, which is what IBS is. I really was shocked at how few doctors know about this.

      Peppermint is good for IBS, provided you don't have acid reflux. Those who have reflux/GERD, pls be careful with this, as it can worsen your condition.
