How I cured my gastritis

When I got diagnosed with mild gastritis (but no H. Pylori) and esophagitis, I looked all over the internet to find what to do. I did not find many accounts of people who have cured themselves successfully and how they did it. So I thought I would write my story once I am cured. Here it is. If you have cured yourself from gastritis too, please share your experience below as well.

Many people ask how long it takes to be cured. At first I started on dexilant for a month but I did not see any improvement. After a month I kept taking dexilant and I started the low acid diet in parallel. I got much better in 2-3 days. After two months on dexilant and one month on the diet, I felt completely good. Then I stopped the dexilant cold turkey and got a lot of pain and acidity back in my stomach. Now I regret I did not take the dexilant a little longer as my stomach was obviously not healed and not strong enough to go through the rebound effect of stopping dexilant. I regret also that I did not stop dexilant slowly taking it every other day for a week, then every three days for a week, .... I felt anxious about taking a medication that has so many side effects taken long term and I wanted to stop immediately, which was not reasonable.

Anyway there I was back at the beginning with stomach pain and acidity day and night. I felt pain related to the esophagitis as well which really scared me. I hesitated to take dexilant again but I decided to try to cure myself the natural way. Below I describe what I did. I got cured in approximately two months, getting slowly better week by week. After two months of natural cures I had no stomach pain anymore and no excess acid, I was able to sleep again, felt like a new healthy (and lighter -- I lost a few pounds) person. However after those two months, I felt that I needed to follow the diet another month for my stomach to get strong and be able to handle a less strict diet.

THE CURE

Books

Most of what I did is summarized in two books which I found very useful:

The first book is "Dropping acid: the reflux diet cookbook & cure" by Jamie Koufman. This is the book I based my diet on. The only disagreements I have with the author regard dairy products that I stopped taking as they make the stomach produce more acid (very clear for me), and the use of ginger, manukka honey and aloe vera which I find too irritating and/or acidic (and I don't feel that they help). Also she does not talk about salt which is known to be irritating for the stomach lining in excess, I felt an improvement when I lowered my intake in salt. I will explain the diet more in details below.

The other book is "Ulcer free! Nature's safe & effective remedy for ulcers" by G. Halpern. I know you may have gastritis and no ulcers but the two conditions are related and what cures one usually cures the other too. I used some of the natural supplements recommended in this book. In particular slippery elm (this one is actually not mentioned in the book) and DGL licorice for stomach pain (coat the interior of the stomach lining), Zinc-Carnosine (reduce inflammation and protects stomach lining - I felt a great improvement after starting to take it especially with acid production at night), and cabbage juice (finished my recovery with this one, after two days I had no stomach pain anymore at night). I describe the supplements more below.

What did not work for me

Mastic gum hurts my stomach. It is supposedly helpful against H. Pylori which I knew I did not have (I had been tested).

Prelief removes the acid in food and stomach very efficiently but causes constipation.

Tums works well for 45 minutes but then there is a rebound effect with the stomach producing more acid.

Manukka honey hurts my stomach (Too acidic, Ph level 4, but maybe also because of the tea tree essential oil in it). It is supposedly helpful against H. Pylori.

Aloe Vera is too acidic (around Ph level 4), and I don't feel it is doing anything positive.

Ginger is irritating and I don't feel it is doing anything positive.

Probiotics helps with digestion but not really for the stomach.

Zantac works very well at removing the acidity but makes me feel dizzy and incredibly tired.

PPI worked very well at removing the acidity and pain in my stomach while I was taking it while doing the diet, but I had a bad rebound effect when I stopped (one must stop slowly by taking it every other day for a while). Also having too low acid in the stomach because of PPI might cause problems in the long term (problems with Calcium and B12 absorption, bacterial infection more likely).

    Five days pain free!

Finally what worked best was the diet, dexilant 60 mg and DGL licorice 30 minutes before each meal.

Its funny you should say that, I have just gone 2 days pain free by changing things round a bit, I have a DGL tab before every meal and eat every 2 hours and bobs your uncle its miles better!

    Congrats ines & matt smile

Hopefully I can join you guys soon to be symptoms free and we all can get off from all the medications soon!

Since you guys take the DGL 30 mins before a meal, do you also wait for 2 hours after finishing the previous meal?

I'm on carafate and its function and usage are similar to DGL I believe, but juggling to make time to take it. I have 5 meals in a day and it has to be taken 1/2 hr before or 2 hrs after meal....

I take mine just before my main meals, but then dont eat for 2 hours, then have some cereal like a weetabix and then wait a few hours etc.  Just take before main meals, but make sure you never get to the stage that you feel hungry, just keep topping it up regularly and thus the acid doesnt get a chance for form.  Keep drinking the coconut water regularly as well to give energy and hydration.

      Hi Vicky,

I eat 4 meals every 3-4 hours: at 8 am, noon, 3.30 pm and 6.30 pm, approximately. But I take the DGL licorice only before lunch and in the afternoon to be sure not to interfere with the PPI.

So yes I take DGL licorice usually more than 2 hours after the previous meal and 30 minutes before the next meal.

Thanks for the info Ines & Matt smile

The coconut water - do you guys buy a fresh coconut and get the water from it? Or you just buy pre-packed? I have bad experience with bottled aloe vera so called "100% pure" juice that now I'm svery cared of trying any pre-packed "specialty waters" :D

I use 100% raw coconut water harmless harvest (available in the US). It is the best and the only packaged coconut water that tastes good.

Im in the uk, and use vita coco natural coconut water available in cartons.

Aloe vera is too acidic, its ph level is less than 4 when in bottle. I tried it too a few months ago and it hurt my stomach.

For everyone in the Gastritis club, do you ever wake up in a morning feeling really lethargic and tired?
    • Posted

It is funny that you mention that as there is a discussion on this topic currently on the daily strength forum. I used to be exhausted when the pain was preventing me to sleep. Now that I sleep better I still feel more tired than I should though. Many people seem to feel dizzy and tired all the time when they have gastritis.

Yeah I have several dizzy spells, its like you feel incredibly weak, usually after you have been sat down for a while.  The last 2 days I have been a lot better up until this morning and I seem to be having a bad one for some reason having down nothing different, and woke this morning feeling like I had been up all night drinking! lol.. as opposed to the truth which was bed at 9pm.

I tend to be either tired all morning and then I become more active in the afternoon, or I am very active all morning and tired all afternoon. Sometimes I push myself to have a full day of work than the next day I have no energy to do anything. The way I sleep seems to matter a lot but still I wish I had enough energy to maintain the rythm of a normal life.

I am better than before though, I used to not be able to stay up all day without a nap.

I started running, I hope it will help. Supposedly running improves the quality of our sleep and has lots of positive effects on health. Every week there is a new article in the health section of the New York Times about it.

      Hi ines

Does the h.pylori or gastritis make u anxious & fearful causing rapid heart beat

What can be done to overcome them especially the fear

    • Posted

      Hi Hebert,

I don't have much anxiety relating to this. But it sounds like you are having panic attacks, am I right? I heard that cognitive therapy with medication (anxiety or anti-depressive I am not sure) gives good results.

      I ines

IHave already taken antidepressant for 3.5 years  &  stop now  but still not fully cures

      Does h.pylori causes that?

    • Posted

I imagine any illness can cause some degree of anxiety especially if it is not taken care of. If you have h. Pylori, a doctor can prescribe you the triple therapy (antibiotics) to get rid of it. I don't have much experience in this since I don't have h. Pylori.

      Hi ines

Last time nov 013 ive check its was gone but still the symptoms of anxiety is still here

      What Can be done?

    • Posted

For anxiety either you want to work on the symptoms, and then a cognitive-behavioral therapist can help you, or you want to look into your life in more depth to find the root of it, and a regular therapist could help. If you have the energy, running regularly is helpful to control anxiety too.

But as much as I would like to be able to help you, I am not a doctor or a specialist in these issues.

if you guys are having dizzy spells, check how your blood pressure is doing. it might be on the low side
    • Posted

Now that we are talking about this I remember that before I was diagnosed with gastritis, I fell unconscious once after a very fatty meal. All the tests came back normal though except for a sligthly low blood count (light anemia). I think now that me falling unconscious was due to stomach pain. I wonder why everybody seems so tired and dizzy with this illness.

i think the diet definitely had something to do with my dizzy spells. when i was on an alkaline diet my blood pressure was very low and i had dizzy spells. once i started to eat more normally it went away
    • Posted

I would think an alkaline diet is healthy. Another thing my blood test showed is that my cholesterol was slightly too low. The doctor was a bit surprised, they don't see that every day I guess. My worry now is more the lack of calcium since I don't eat any dairy anymore.

Weakness can come from the lack of calories and the fact that the metabolism slows down when we eat a low calorie diet for a while. Eating more calories and exercising might help regain energy.

the low cholesterol would be becos of eating less fatty things when one tries to reduce acidity, in this way it is healthier. but my alkaline diet was rather restrictive in what i could eat that would not cause acid reflux for me and definitely caused my dizzy spells and lack of energy.

I have tried the alkaline diet and the anti-inflamatory diet and the issue with both is getting enough calories, its next to impossible.  I have lost nearly 2 stone and I didnt have it to lose to start with, so its something thats no good for you.  At the moment I am trying various things to try and get a higher calorific intake.

What about increasing the amount of carbohydrate you eat? Since I did that I am not loosing any weight anymore and I have the energy to exercise. I am eating between 1 1/2 to 2 cups of carbohydrates per meal now.
    • Posted

Which carbohydrate would you recommend?  Potato, Rice or Pasta and what should I eat with it?  I just got some Rice Noodles so Ill give them a try this week.
    • Posted

I like to make mash potatoes: I cook the potatoes in water with a pinch of salt, than I mash them with a little bit of the cooking water. If you can tolerate it, a little bit of olive oil makes it more tasty. Rice and pasta are good too. Just make a bigger quantity (2 servings = +- 2 cups) with a protein (150 g of chicken breast, fish, ...) and a cup of steamed vegetables or 1 glass of vegetable juice (carrot-celery-fennel is very tasty). I think carbohydrate is the best way to get more calories without hurting your stomach.

One thing I read the other day is to never reheat your rice as apparently once reheated it becomes a lat harder to digest for some reason, so always make fresh.

      Is it from Norman Robillard?

I read that cold rice is harder to digest but once reheated it is fine.
