How I cured my gastritis
Posted , 375 users are following.
When I got diagnosed with mild gastritis (but no H. Pylori) and esophagitis, I looked all over the internet to find what to do. I did not find many accounts of people who have cured themselves successfully and how they did it. So I thought I would write my story once I am cured. Here it is. If you have cured yourself from gastritis too, please share your experience below as well.
Many people ask how long it takes to be cured. At first I started on dexilant for a month but I did not see any improvement. After a month I kept taking dexilant and I started the low acid diet in parallel. I got much better in 2-3 days. After two months on dexilant and one month on the diet, I felt completely good. Then I stopped the dexilant cold turkey and got a lot of pain and acidity back in my stomach. Now I regret I did not take the dexilant a little longer as my stomach was obviously not healed and not strong enough to go through the rebound effect of stopping dexilant. I regret also that I did not stop dexilant slowly taking it every other day for a week, then every three days for a week, .... I felt anxious about taking a medication that has so many side effects taken long term and I wanted to stop immediately, which was not reasonable.
Anyway there I was back at the beginning with stomach pain and acidity day and night. I felt pain related to the esophagitis as well which really scared me. I hesitated to take dexilant again but I decided to try to cure myself the natural way. Below I describe what I did. I got cured in approximately two months, getting slowly better week by week. After two months of natural cures I had no stomach pain anymore and no excess acid, I was able to sleep again, felt like a new healthy (and lighter -- I lost a few pounds) person. However after those two months, I felt that I needed to follow the diet another month for my stomach to get strong and be able to handle a less strict diet.
THE CURE
Books
Most of what I did is summarized in two books which I found very useful:
The first book is "Dropping acid: the reflux diet cookbook & cure" by Jamie Koufman. This is the book I based my diet on. The only disagreements I have with the author regard dairy products that I stopped taking as they make the stomach produce more acid (very clear for me), and the use of ginger, manukka honey and aloe vera which I find too irritating and/or acidic (and I don't feel that they help). Also she does not talk about salt which is known to be irritating for the stomach lining in excess, I felt an improvement when I lowered my intake in salt. I will explain the diet more in details below.
The other book is "Ulcer free! Nature's safe & effective remedy for ulcers" by G. Halpern. I know you may have gastritis and no ulcers but the two conditions are related and what cures one usually cures the other too. I used some of the natural supplements recommended in this book. In particular slippery elm (this one is actually not mentioned in the book) and DGL licorice for stomach pain (coat the interior of the stomach lining), Zinc-Carnosine (reduce inflammation and protects stomach lining - I felt a great improvement after starting to take it especially with acid production at night), and cabbage juice (finished my recovery with this one, after two days I had no stomach pain anymore at night). I describe the supplements more below.
What did not work for me
Mastic gum hurts my stomach. It is supposedly helpful against H. Pylori which I knew I did not have (I had been tested).
Prelief removes the acid in food and stomach very efficiently but causes constipation.
Tums works well for 45 minutes but then there is a rebound effect with the stomach producing more acid.
Manukka honey hurts my stomach (Too acidic, Ph level 4, but maybe also because of the tea tree essential oil in it). It is supposedly helpful against H. Pylori.
Aloe Vera is too acidic (around Ph level 4), and I don't feel it is doing anything positive.
Ginger is irritating and I don't feel it is doing anything positive.
Probiotics helps with digestion but not really for the stomach.
Zantac works very well at removing the acidity but makes me feel dizzy and incredibly tired.
PPI worked very well at removing the acidity and pain in my stomach while I was taking it while doing the diet, but I had a bad rebound effect when I stopped (one must stop slowly by taking it every other day for a while). Also having too low acid in the stomach because of PPI might cause problems in the long term (problems with Calcium and B12 absorption, bacterial infection more likely).

I cannot say that it is a cure because it is Chronic Gastrititis ( no cure for that), L-Glutamine heals the stomach walls.

Also there was a study recently showing scientifically that fish oil doesn't do anything positive for health contrarily to eating fish which has a positive effect (Even though webmd says that fish oil helps lower tryglycerids). Eating whole fish seems to be better for health. You might want to read an article published in the New York Times 3 days ago called "lots of reasons to eat fish".
I think more and more that all these supplements are just meant for the big companies to make money and that we need much less than we think if we have a healthy diet.

I've been fighting gastritis since November last year. At the beginning I felt burning in stomach and chest when eating. The first endoscopy showed inflammation of stomach. I was prescribed Nexium. But I used to be a cafeine/chocolate addict, I reduced the intake but screwed up the treatment. Second endoscopy 3 months later, showed inflammation of stomach and negative for H. Pylori. I stopped drinking coffee, chocolate but was eating stuff I didn't think that were irritating my stomach (aloe vera, ginger), I was blaming the pain on some other foods or bad habits, like eating big meals at night. I had to change lots of habits and keep testing foods, eating a bit of this and waiting for the reaction. But also I have a bad reaction when bending, moving, lifting stuff, I couldn't even drive my car after meals. Practically I could not move for at least 30-40 minutes otherwise had strong pain in breastbone that lasted for hours. I had pain and lots of belching just with movements. I used to feel very bloated after eating, so that I had to remove my bra and in addition lots of reflux when I drink water with meals, so I had to stop doing that as well. Just small sips of water cause me burps. I'm thinking that I must have hernia hiatal, so I'm visiting another GI in 3 weeks and I'm getting tested again. This time I decided to change doctor.
Very recently I began to feel nausea after eating, although there is no pain. Also I have sore throat and it is getting worst. I've been taking omeprazole since march this year and continue taking it. It does not seem to be helping. Anyways I continue taking it. I began to take carafate which has helped to reduce the nausea and also I have eliminated Aloe vera, ginger, cinammon in my diet. I've been feeling some relief, just now had my breakfast (1/3 cup melon, 1/3 cup papaya and 1/3 cup ripe banana) and began to feel nausea again and no pain, I guess it was the banana, I can eat only bananas when they are very very very ripe
...I'll let you know about the results of the tests.

I had the below symptoms
1. Stomach churning due to excessive gas
2. Lots of Belching after I eat
3. Burning sensation in stomach if I eat something with even light spice
4. Stomach upset keeping me awake at night
5. Bloated stomach after i eat
6. Feeling full even if I eat small portion of food at night
7. Tested positive for H.Pylori
8. Frequent bowel movement
My doctor advised me to be on PPI for once in a day after my dinner. I had PPI for 3 months. Initial 2 weeks I had PPI for 2 times in a day. Antacid syrup at night time for 1 month. 3 course tablet for a week to get rid of h pylori. Above tablets are strictly on my doctor advise.
Diet during gastritis:
Eat only small quantity at a time. If you previously had 3 meals a day, now split the quantity to 4 meals a day. A hungry stomach can worsen the gastritis ulcer, so keep eating whenever you feel hungry. Now What to eat; I had yoghurt or curd with rice for 3 times a day for initial 3 weeks. Had fruits like less-riped banana, papaya, mango, apple, strawberry, pineapple(a little), pomegranate, melons. Had some vegetable juice like beetroot, carrot. Fruits and vegetable juice are in between meals. Took buttermilk(1 table spoon yoghurt in glass of water stir well) in between meals twice a day with pinch of asafoetida mixed in it. A lot of water in a day is very crucial to the cure. Take diluted fresh lemon juice twice a week.
Avoid stomach irritants like chilli, alcohol, smoking, vinegar, aerated drinks, soda, ginger, coffee, for me even tea, citric acid fruits, any other thing you find irritant to stomach. Because irritants vary form person to person. Include boiled egg in your daily diet. I ate well cooked chicken once in 2 weeks. Hard to digest foods may worsen your symptoms like red meat, pulses like soy bean, avoid these foods atleast for a month or so. Oil I used for cooking is sesame oil which I use traditionally. Doctors usually advise to take Olive oil, which is a neutral oil. Do not eat anything hot or cold.
Many websites advise alkaline diet which is basically eating lots of natural foods. Certain alkaline foods are also irritant to stomach avoid those. Otherwise eat a lot of alkaline rich fruits, raisins and nuts(almonds). Raw vegetables(except juice), raw green leaf are hard to digest, I found it little uncomfortable. Eat a balanced diet.
Lifestyle changes:
Lifestyle changes are mandatory. Exercise well for atleast 30 minutes a day in morning, but my stomach hurts in the initial 1 month of gastritis if I exercise. Go to sleep after 3 hours of having your meal. Go to bed early like 9pm and try to sleep in a dark room which enables the melatonin secretion which is a crucial enzyme for curing our body, which secretes only during our good early night sleep. Never ever have a heavy meal during gastritis. If you do not get sleep because of the pain or upset, try antacid syrup. Have a refreshing walk after each meal. Avoid stress or heated arguments which will worsen your symptoms. I lost nearly 8 kg in this 3 months diet. Alter your lifestyle such that you here on avoid your stomach irritants until you get fully recovered.
Doing the above things I recovered in 3 months time about 80%. Timeline of the betterment varies on the severity. Never worry a lot, you will also get back to normal course. All you need is a thinking that you will recover very soon. Be positive about getting well which is more important of all.

Thank you for sharing.
I am doing the same as you except for all the acid fruits and the dairy, and I stay away from lemon juice. Also I find raw beet in juice a little bit irritating, not too bad though. I cook them now.
I agree with you about raw green leaf that are hard to digest because of the fibers, I put them in my juice though to get the benefits.
DGL licorice helped me to sleep when I had pain in the past.
I don't understand the problem with soy. I eat a lot of soy now, mostly tofu (firm for lunch or dinner, silken for smoothies) and tempeh. I tolerate it very well.
I agree with you that exercise is important if you have the energy. I was walking and meditating when I was feeling bad (with the lack of sleep it was hard to do anything more strenous). Now that I feel good again I started running 2 miles 3 times a week. I plan to add one mile every month. It helps a lot with sleep, stress and anxiety, therefore it helps with the stomach.

If anyone can advise how long it usually is before you start to be able to eat normal things in a normal fashion and thus get a decent level of calories per day that would be nice to know. e.g. A while pot of cottage cheese is 250kcal. Thats the same as 4 biscuits!!

What is your BMI?
I was very lethargic before too. With low calorie intake, the body goes in starvation mode, reducing its expenses to match the intake of calories. Make sure you eat enough proteins in your meals (at least 100g-150g) at lunch and dinner so you loose mostly fat and not muscles.
A few weeks ago I started feeling better and being able to eat bigger amount of food. I still stay away from fat as it is not good for the stomach but I eat much more carbohydrates. I started running too to wake up my metabolism.
The first time I took the dexilant, it took me two months to feel good and be able to eat the amount of food I wanted. The second time I took it, it took me one month, I guess I was better when I started and I had a much better knowledge of my diet. But I was diagnosed with mild gastritis. I imagine it would have taken much longer if I had had a more serious cases of gastritis.
