How I cured my gastritis

Posted , 375 users are following.

When I got diagnosed with mild gastritis (but no H. Pylori) and esophagitis, I looked all over the internet to find what to do. I did not find many accounts of people who have cured themselves successfully and how they did it. So I thought I would write my story once I am cured. Here it is. If you have cured yourself from gastritis too, please share your experience below as well.

Many people ask how long it takes to be cured. At first I started on dexilant for a month but I did not see any improvement. After a month I kept taking dexilant and I started the low acid diet in parallel. I got much better in 2-3 days. After two months on dexilant and one month on the diet, I felt completely good. Then I stopped the dexilant cold turkey and got a lot of pain and acidity back in my stomach. Now I regret I did not take the dexilant a little longer as my stomach was obviously not healed and not strong enough to go through the rebound effect of stopping dexilant. I regret also that I did not stop dexilant slowly taking it every other day for a week, then every three days for a week, .... I felt anxious about taking a medication that has so many side effects taken long term and I wanted to stop immediately, which was not reasonable.

Anyway there I was back at the beginning with stomach pain and acidity day and night. I felt pain related to the esophagitis as well which really scared me. I hesitated to take dexilant again but I decided to try to cure myself the natural way. Below I describe what I did. I got cured in approximately two months, getting slowly better week by week. After two months of natural cures I had no stomach pain anymore and no excess acid, I was able to sleep again, felt like a new healthy (and lighter -- I lost a few pounds) person. However after those two months, I felt that I needed to follow the diet another month for my stomach to get strong and be able to handle a less strict diet.

THE CURE

Books

Most of what I did is summarized in two books which I found very useful:

The first book is "Dropping acid: the reflux diet cookbook & cure" by Jamie Koufman. This is the book I based my diet on. The only disagreements I have with the author regard dairy products that I stopped taking as they make the stomach produce more acid (very clear for me), and the use of ginger, manukka honey and aloe vera which I find too irritating and/or acidic (and I don't feel that they help). Also she does not talk about salt which is known to be irritating for the stomach lining in excess, I felt an improvement when I lowered my intake in salt. I will explain the diet more in details below.

The other book is "Ulcer free! Nature's safe & effective remedy for ulcers" by G. Halpern. I know you may have gastritis and no ulcers but the two conditions are related and what cures one usually cures the other too. I used some of the natural supplements recommended in this book. In particular slippery elm (this one is actually not mentioned in the book) and DGL licorice for stomach pain (coat the interior of the stomach lining), Zinc-Carnosine (reduce inflammation and protects stomach lining - I felt a great improvement after starting to take it especially with acid production at night), and cabbage juice (finished my recovery with this one, after two days I had no stomach pain anymore at night). I describe the supplements more below.

What did not work for me

Mastic gum hurts my stomach. It is supposedly helpful against H. Pylori which I knew I did not have (I had been tested).

Prelief removes the acid in food and stomach very efficiently but causes constipation.

Tums works well for 45 minutes but then there is a rebound effect with the stomach producing more acid.

Manukka honey hurts my stomach (Too acidic, Ph level 4, but maybe also because of the tea tree essential oil in it). It is supposedly helpful against H. Pylori.

Aloe Vera is too acidic (around Ph level 4), and I don't feel it is doing anything positive.

Ginger is irritating and I don't feel it is doing anything positive.

Probiotics helps with digestion but not really for the stomach.

Zantac works very well at removing the acidity but makes me feel dizzy and incredibly tired.

PPI worked very well at removing the acidity and pain in my stomach while I was taking it while doing the diet, but I had a bad rebound effect when I stopped (one must stop slowly by taking it every other day for a while). Also having too low acid in the stomach because of PPI might cause problems in the long term (problems with Calcium and B12 absorption, bacterial infection more likely).

I just found a new very interesting article talking about the link between milk and acid reflux. It is called "Got Milk? You don't need it" by Mark Bittman in the opinion section of the New York Times. I can't put the link easily but you will find it with google help.

To Whoever: Does Gastrits slow digestion down? Food just sits in my stomach.
    • Posted

      Hi acakes,

It is possible that digestion maybe slow. It can also be due to the medication (PPI's) as well (if you are taking any).

    • Posted

Does medicines help from the doctor that help speed up digestion? Does it help us to heal? I feel like slow digestion is keeping me from healing?

I think domperidone/motilium is a medicine used to empty the stomach fast. Normally it is given in combination with PPI. I think it helps move the food faster. But if you are in the US, i think domperidone is not approved, so you might have to ask the doc for an alternative.

Not really sure about that. Personally, I dont think so. But atleast food wont sit around in your stomach and get fermented, if digestion is faster.

Hi acakes. Gastritis heals quicker if you eat easy-to-digest foods. Red meat is harder for the stomach to digest than white meat which is why it is better to eat chicken/turkey when you have gastritis. Digestive enzymes help you to digest foods but you have to be careful that they dont contain anything that might aggravate your condition.

Has anyone had issues with chicken or Turkey?? I can eat the lunch meat on a sandwich but seem to have issues with chiken breast no matter how blan it is and I have had it baked and grilled??

Tried cook oats, it a very well digested food. If you have problem digest your food, by all means you should eat oats during dinner as night time our stomach are less digestive. Oats move well in our stomach area.

When I make my gut really bad, I do have to stop eating meat for a few days to let it start recovering as it tends to give me stomach ache. I will eat fish for those days then reintroduce chicken. I was told to boil the chicken as it doesnt dry it out so much making it softer and easier to digest.

My digestion is better at lunchtime than at dinner time, have you tried eating meat at lunchtime and fish for dinner?

I usually buy a plain baked chicken then I make a stew with carrots, parsnips, potatoes, turnips cubed (1-inch). After I saute the vegetables in a little bit of salt and oil, I add 3-4 cups of water and let simmer for 20-25 minutes with a lid. Then I add the cubed chicken breast. The water of the stew helps with the dryness of the chicken.

Thanks Ines. Thats sounds worth trying. Im just trying out a recipe for gluten free sourdough bread. Not sure i'm going to be able to digest it but need to try and find more things to eat. Seem to be constantly hungry at the moment, going to bed starving which isnt helping situation.

Please share your recipe for the bread if it works out well.

I like the gluten-free "food for life" bread sold in the us, especially their english muffins. They are made of rice flour mostly and they are delicious.

Will do. I am using rice flour as well. You have to feed the starter for a few days then bake the bread from it. Will let you know what its like.  All the gluten free cakes in the uk have got too much sugar in. I do seem to have trouble digesting gluten free bread so not holding out much hope that I will be able to eat it.

The english muffins are actually bread but in the shape of a small wheel.

My husband made gluten-free banana bread (cake really) the other day, it was delicious but he used some apple puree instead of some of the fat so I am not sure it would be good for gastritis.

I did not know that about the digestion but makes so much since now. Because I have a protocole during the day and I am fine but some times I will have what I had in the morining at night and it will slightly bother me and I couldnt understand it. For the women on the group  I have to get back on Birth control and do to it always make s me sick I always take it at night but  we cant eat three hours before. I am going to hope a few crackers with water when I take it is okay..Any one else take this at night?

I have not tried meat at lunch time but I am going to have to try adding my new foods now first at lunch since that seems like what is happening and see what happens. Thank you.

Oh thanks any recipies would be great I am going to have to try that one.It sound like the chicken would be really moist.

I have made banana bread a few times but I find it very heavy and it just seems to sit in my stomach. Hopefully the bread will be easier for me to digest.

For those who feel better already, the stew is even better with a bay leaf and fresh thyme added at the beginning.

So I had my month follow up with my gastrologist and he said since it appears the ppi did not work and  zantac is not working for me he wants me to try a different route and see if I have low acid causing my problem and wants me to try the apple cider viniger home treatment...Why does this scare me so...I am affraid that it will hurt. Has anyone tried this? And if so did it hurt? I have another follow up in a month. I am going to wait till morning to try it since I am scared to be in pain at night. He said tums dont block acid just calms the symptoms down so to continue taking them if I need them with the slippery elm and pepzin..I know they have a test they can do to see if your acid is low but he seemed to think we should try this first...I personally would prefer the test first but I can never get myself to disagree with what the doctors says...

Hi Valerie. It does sound scary but apple cider vinegar is supposed to be good for digestion. My gut is particularly sensitive to anything acidic, the only fruit I can have is banana, anything else makes mine burn. How do you get on with other fruits? I find the best time to take anything to try and see how I react without doing too much damage is just after my lunch. I have tried acv but like everything else, it reacted. I couldnt take pepzin or slippery elm either. Im sure Ines will be able to offer her advice, shes very knowledgeable.

      Hi Valerie,

I am sorry I can't help. I haven't tried apple cider. Its ph level is 2.8-3 and since everything below 5 hurts my stomach, I did not think it would help me. What are your symptoms exactly?

If you think your problem is that you don't digest things well/fast enough, you could try gastrazyme, I would imagine it is less irritating than apple cider. I only tried it a few days and if it is irratating, it is not obvious/strong but it helps digestion and I have been told it helped some people get rid of their heartburn.

If you really want to try the apple cider, start gradually, for example put one or two drops in a glass of water, see how you feel, if you feel ok, next time 4 drops, and so on until the recommended dose. If you feel a small reaction (you should feel it immediately) you will know and you will be able to stop before it gets too bad.

I wish I read this before I tried it. I did the two teaspoons in 8oa fo warm water...I got queasy drinking it but that could of been because of the taste and then I had like a little throat burn and stomach.. So I ate my usual breakfast and well still feeling the burn in my throat and tummy ach kinda. Thinking right now my doctor is wrong... My usual symptoms was throat clearing then with some low heart burn then they put me on perscription H2 blocker and my stomach then started to burn too. Then they switched me to ppi s for a month and I felt no better so I went off of everything for a month except slippery elm and strict diet and I did not feel worse or better though on really strict days I had some good days . Now this...Ick I wish he would of just let me do the test first cause now I am sitting her wondering do I continue to use it for a week and see does it take awhile? I guess I should call and ask . ick  I just wish I knew what would work so I can do it already..lol

If you feel stomach pain and heartburn with it, I don't think it is good for you. You said you had good days on a strict diet, maybe that is the way to go. Just try to have more and more good days until they are all good.

Hi Valerie. I have just tried to take L glutamine which is supposed to be really good for your stomach lining. I took it at 10.30 am after I eat and my gut is still sore/burning 4 hrs later. Do you get burning from medications as well in your stomach/gut?

I have decided not to take any more medications apart from probiotics which dont affect me. Its so annoying and my stress levels are just getting worse and worse which  I'm sure is making me worse.

How are you feeling now after the apple cider vinegar?

I am having the same issue. The perscriptions the doctors gave just made me stomach burn. I did not  have stomach burn before them. The slippery elm. the DGL . Even the chamomile tea. I feel like a lab experiament..but I always stop after I get the burn so I am going to try a few days of each and see. The slippery elm I only took once a day and some days I burned and some I did not.  Yesterday I did not feel good with the 2teaspoons in 8oz of water but later in the evening I tried a plan chicken leg again and got a small burn in my stomach and throat and everyone else was having BBQ chicken legs which I love and firgured well I am already slightly uncomfortable why not....weird thing was it did not make things worse it was the same..??  I have no clue what my triggers are even after this whole diet thing...So my doctor told me to try only 1 teaspoon of ACV today..I got a little tickling in my throat but that was it. Then it went away before I was ready to eat. I had breakfast but I also used that manuka honey with breakfast and then took my vitimens and now my stomach burns mildly. THE Honey??? I dont think it was the viniger since I did not react till a hour after breakfast. I just took a DGL in hopes it would help and nothing has changed. Could be the vitamins but I am deficient in vitamin D so I have to take it. I also need to get back on my birth control Iam sure that wont make me feel good either. I just want some one to say take this it will work and take it and it actually work doesnt have to right away I am patient sort of but I just hate not knowing..My brother in law uses the avc and it works for him said it took a week to start working so I think I will stick with the viniger this week with my probiotic and I think I will try the pepzin again. I need to know something is protecting my stomach while I figure this out. So I am hoping the pepzin does not make my stomach burn like it use to. I did find out though that ensure the original does not bother me. Less protien in it then the pluss maybe I will stop loosing weight.

L glutamine didnt suit me as well...And ACV made my stomach worse..I even tried Betaine HCL with pepsin tablets suggested by a naturopath (for low acid) but I felt bad with it..I think I did all that and aggravated my condition before I took PPI's cry

The manuka honey definitely hurts my stomach. Honey in general hurts my stomach if I consume it repeatedly, but manuka honey hurts my stomach immediately. I suspect it is the tea tree essential oil naturally present in it (from the bush the bees use).

I hope you can find something to  help you, the trouble is when you are trying lots of different things, if something reacts you're not always sure which one it is. I'm just sticking to my probiotics.
