How I cured my gastritis
Posted , 375 users are following.
When I got diagnosed with mild gastritis (but no H. Pylori) and esophagitis, I looked all over the internet to find what to do. I did not find many accounts of people who have cured themselves successfully and how they did it. So I thought I would write my story once I am cured. Here it is. If you have cured yourself from gastritis too, please share your experience below as well.
Many people ask how long it takes to be cured. At first I started on dexilant for a month but I did not see any improvement. After a month I kept taking dexilant and I started the low acid diet in parallel. I got much better in 2-3 days. After two months on dexilant and one month on the diet, I felt completely good. Then I stopped the dexilant cold turkey and got a lot of pain and acidity back in my stomach. Now I regret I did not take the dexilant a little longer as my stomach was obviously not healed and not strong enough to go through the rebound effect of stopping dexilant. I regret also that I did not stop dexilant slowly taking it every other day for a week, then every three days for a week, .... I felt anxious about taking a medication that has so many side effects taken long term and I wanted to stop immediately, which was not reasonable.
Anyway there I was back at the beginning with stomach pain and acidity day and night. I felt pain related to the esophagitis as well which really scared me. I hesitated to take dexilant again but I decided to try to cure myself the natural way. Below I describe what I did. I got cured in approximately two months, getting slowly better week by week. After two months of natural cures I had no stomach pain anymore and no excess acid, I was able to sleep again, felt like a new healthy (and lighter -- I lost a few pounds) person. However after those two months, I felt that I needed to follow the diet another month for my stomach to get strong and be able to handle a less strict diet.
THE CURE
Books
Most of what I did is summarized in two books which I found very useful:
The first book is "Dropping acid: the reflux diet cookbook & cure" by Jamie Koufman. This is the book I based my diet on. The only disagreements I have with the author regard dairy products that I stopped taking as they make the stomach produce more acid (very clear for me), and the use of ginger, manukka honey and aloe vera which I find too irritating and/or acidic (and I don't feel that they help). Also she does not talk about salt which is known to be irritating for the stomach lining in excess, I felt an improvement when I lowered my intake in salt. I will explain the diet more in details below.
The other book is "Ulcer free! Nature's safe & effective remedy for ulcers" by G. Halpern. I know you may have gastritis and no ulcers but the two conditions are related and what cures one usually cures the other too. I used some of the natural supplements recommended in this book. In particular slippery elm (this one is actually not mentioned in the book) and DGL licorice for stomach pain (coat the interior of the stomach lining), Zinc-Carnosine (reduce inflammation and protects stomach lining - I felt a great improvement after starting to take it especially with acid production at night), and cabbage juice (finished my recovery with this one, after two days I had no stomach pain anymore at night). I describe the supplements more below.
What did not work for me
Mastic gum hurts my stomach. It is supposedly helpful against H. Pylori which I knew I did not have (I had been tested).
Prelief removes the acid in food and stomach very efficiently but causes constipation.
Tums works well for 45 minutes but then there is a rebound effect with the stomach producing more acid.
Manukka honey hurts my stomach (Too acidic, Ph level 4, but maybe also because of the tea tree essential oil in it). It is supposedly helpful against H. Pylori.
Aloe Vera is too acidic (around Ph level 4), and I don't feel it is doing anything positive.
Ginger is irritating and I don't feel it is doing anything positive.
Probiotics helps with digestion but not really for the stomach.
Zantac works very well at removing the acidity but makes me feel dizzy and incredibly tired.
PPI worked very well at removing the acidity and pain in my stomach while I was taking it while doing the diet, but I had a bad rebound effect when I stopped (one must stop slowly by taking it every other day for a while). Also having too low acid in the stomach because of PPI might cause problems in the long term (problems with Calcium and B12 absorption, bacterial infection more likely).

Unfortunately in the case of gastritis, all fats cause the digestion to slow down which cause your stomach to be subject to digestive juices longer and more prone to be inflammed. But a little bit of fat is ok depending how you feel right now, I started with 1 teaspoon per meal, went up to a table spoon when I got better, than now I can eat much more. Since you are having little fat, it is better to choose healthy fats: avocado and nut butter are an excellent choice, just start with small quantities.

Now coming to the diet, it's good that you are being strict with your diet. It's really difficult to stick to diets when everyone around you eats normally! And nuts or oat cakes shouldn't be a problem. They are good for the stomach and healthy as well. Are the cakes gluten and sugar free?and which nuts are you eating.. Almonds, walnuts are great as they also have a low mold content. Avoid peanuts, cashew, raisins, pistachios. Are you on a no carb diet or a candida diet? basically, if you don't feel good after eating something, don't eat it! You need to keep testing till you find what agrees and what doesn't.
I did do the diet strictly for a couple of months but even after that I realised I felt bad with everything I ate. And it made no difference to me as I felt the same. That was when I realised I had been given a wrong diagnosis about candida when In fact I actually had h pylori which was tested positive via endoscopy. I was told I had gluten, lactose intolerance etc (wrongly by the naturopath). I still avoid both for the gastritis but I am able to eat rice, lentils, veggies, yoghurt (homemade) normally.

It sounds like stress was the main reason for your problems starting.
Mine was down to overuse of antibiotics/painkillers and oregano. I'm not sure I can ever heal my damaged gut as I am 48 and I think it is harder, the older you get.
I have booked an appointment to see Dr in a couple of weeks to get an antidepressant as I'm sure I am making myself worse stressing about it all the time.
I hope you are still feeling better. Take care, Emma.

What lentils do you eat. I will have a look to see if I am allowed them with leaky gut. Might help to fill me up a bit if I eat them in my soups.

Regarding antibiotics. My doc wanted me to try antibiotics and now I think I have C Diff from the antibiotics! I have loose thin stool all day like every hour I have to use the restroom, and burning and cramping! I am upset about this!

Never thought of adding oats and potato to smoothies but thats a good idea. I cant tolerate any milk. What protein powder did you use?
If you have taken antibiotics and they have upset you, it would be a really good idea to start a probiotic. I do take two a day and think they are useful not only for your stomach but your immune system. Let me know if you would like to know which one as I dont have a problem taking them.
It sounds like the antibiotics have upset your beneficial bacteria.
Is cooked brown rice flour the same as cooked brown rice?
Thanks, Emma.

I am taking a probiotic. I hope I don't have C Diff. That's no fun. Doing a stool test todag and will find out soon. I need to do a colonoscopy soon because something is not right.

Could you tell me exactly how you make your smoothies please? I'd like to know for future ref, as I can only drink water at the mo. 😢 what kind of different foods can you eat now?
I too have suffered with my anxiety about all this. I'm on enough medication now to make a mental health hospital happy! x

Are you feeling a lot better now? Do you think anxiety really hinders recovery? x

I think anxiety effects healing, but if you are taking a PPI I think it helps because it is blocking the acide created by anxiety. To me I was too stressed because of the Gastritis that I knew I needed a little something to take the edge off.

sometimes I soak 1cup green mung beans for 6 hours with 1/2 cup rice. After 6 hours I grind them into a batter in a mixer with salt, some cilantro, a pinch of ginger (you can avoid it). You can make thin crispy pancakes with the batter. I use coconut oil for the pancakes instead of butter. I was told lentils are good for leaky gut by a naturopath. So I hope it helps you

I eat quite a lot veg and potatos. Again, growing suck of them too haha. But if I want to heal then I better start enjoying them!
Lately I'm finding I'm getting a sore throat after drinking any sort of milk. Be it almond, coconut or dairy. My mum says it's another anxiety symptom as I've been getting myself quite worked up. Trying hard to just be calm and get on with it though.
How are you getting on? x

I am only 10 weeks in. Acid reflux from pregnancy comes when the baby/placenta pushes on the stomach, which is not happening yet.

I'm not able to have any alternative milks either. Even though they're not dairy, they still make me feel sick and acidy. I have to add water to my smoothies.
I'm going to the Dr soon to get some antidepressents because I do feel stress and anxiety will stop you healing. I have been very stressed lately. The trouble is the worse you get, the more you stress which makes you even worse.
Are you beginning to feel any better now for doing a stricter diet?

I'm ok drinking water, just sick of it. I really want my life back. Sick of worrying about my stomach and missing out on everything.

I hope you can get on top of your problems. Was there something that triggered your stomach problems? Mine was too many antibiotics/painkillers and a strong herb. Not sure I can ever totally repair the damage, but I know stress is holding me back.

I think mine was stress and alcohol tbh. And yeah I think my stress and anxitey is holding me back too. I've become really sensitised to everything, I.e any slight niggle anywhere and I'm like 'oMG now what!' I'm a catastrophiser. On a lot of meds at the mo to help my mental state.
I'm sure we will get better, as long as we listen to our bodies and stop stressing about it. I've spoken to loads of people and they say if they get stressed it affects their stomach straight away. So it's obvious if our poor tummys are already sore then getting worked up will just make them worse. I'm trying to stop caring as much and just eat what ever bland food works. Then in time my tummy will improve. I think my taste buds have moved out anyway 😉 xx

Stress really is so bad for us. My 18 year old has just changed jobs and was quite stressed and he is also experiencing stomach problems. Ive managed to get a Drs appointment tomorrow so going to see what they advise but have to be careful what I take, as nearly all meds make my tummy burn.
Ive cut my diet down to just bland, easy to digest foods and it is definitely helping so hopefully with calming medicines, it might start to heal. Ive had mine for 18 years on and off so can imagine its going to take a long time to get better.
Are you on anti-d'S?. Might help you if not. x
