How I cured my gastritis

When I got diagnosed with mild gastritis (but no H. Pylori) and esophagitis, I looked all over the internet to find what to do. I did not find many accounts of people who have cured themselves successfully and how they did it. So I thought I would write my story once I am cured. Here it is. If you have cured yourself from gastritis too, please share your experience below as well.

Many people ask how long it takes to be cured. At first I started on dexilant for a month but I did not see any improvement. After a month I kept taking dexilant and I started the low acid diet in parallel. I got much better in 2-3 days. After two months on dexilant and one month on the diet, I felt completely good. Then I stopped the dexilant cold turkey and got a lot of pain and acidity back in my stomach. Now I regret I did not take the dexilant a little longer as my stomach was obviously not healed and not strong enough to go through the rebound effect of stopping dexilant. I regret also that I did not stop dexilant slowly taking it every other day for a week, then every three days for a week, .... I felt anxious about taking a medication that has so many side effects taken long term and I wanted to stop immediately, which was not reasonable.

Anyway there I was back at the beginning with stomach pain and acidity day and night. I felt pain related to the esophagitis as well which really scared me. I hesitated to take dexilant again but I decided to try to cure myself the natural way. Below I describe what I did. I got cured in approximately two months, getting slowly better week by week. After two months of natural cures I had no stomach pain anymore and no excess acid, I was able to sleep again, felt like a new healthy (and lighter -- I lost a few pounds) person. However after those two months, I felt that I needed to follow the diet another month for my stomach to get strong and be able to handle a less strict diet.

THE CURE

Books

Most of what I did is summarized in two books which I found very useful:

The first book is "Dropping acid: the reflux diet cookbook & cure" by Jamie Koufman. This is the book I based my diet on. The only disagreements I have with the author regard dairy products that I stopped taking as they make the stomach produce more acid (very clear for me), and the use of ginger, manukka honey and aloe vera which I find too irritating and/or acidic (and I don't feel that they help). Also she does not talk about salt which is known to be irritating for the stomach lining in excess, I felt an improvement when I lowered my intake in salt. I will explain the diet more in details below.

The other book is "Ulcer free! Nature's safe & effective remedy for ulcers" by G. Halpern. I know you may have gastritis and no ulcers but the two conditions are related and what cures one usually cures the other too. I used some of the natural supplements recommended in this book. In particular slippery elm (this one is actually not mentioned in the book) and DGL licorice for stomach pain (coat the interior of the stomach lining), Zinc-Carnosine (reduce inflammation and protects stomach lining - I felt a great improvement after starting to take it especially with acid production at night), and cabbage juice (finished my recovery with this one, after two days I had no stomach pain anymore at night). I describe the supplements more below.

What did not work for me

Mastic gum hurts my stomach. It is supposedly helpful against H. Pylori which I knew I did not have (I had been tested).

Prelief removes the acid in food and stomach very efficiently but causes constipation.

Tums works well for 45 minutes but then there is a rebound effect with the stomach producing more acid.

Manukka honey hurts my stomach (Too acidic, Ph level 4, but maybe also because of the tea tree essential oil in it). It is supposedly helpful against H. Pylori.

Aloe Vera is too acidic (around Ph level 4), and I don't feel it is doing anything positive.

Ginger is irritating and I don't feel it is doing anything positive.

Probiotics helps with digestion but not really for the stomach.

Zantac works very well at removing the acidity but makes me feel dizzy and incredibly tired.

PPI worked very well at removing the acidity and pain in my stomach while I was taking it while doing the diet, but I had a bad rebound effect when I stopped (one must stop slowly by taking it every other day for a while). Also having too low acid in the stomach because of PPI might cause problems in the long term (problems with Calcium and B12 absorption, bacterial infection more likely).

Does anyone know if the stuff you have to drink the night before a Colonoscopy is irritating to the stomach if you have Gastritis?

I don't remember having problems with it but it is not going to be pleasant.

I don't remember that it caused me any stomach problem, the diarrhea is not very pleasant though.

Why gastritis is taking so much time to heal? I mean, ulcer is healing within 4-6 weeks with PPI drugs, but not gastritis. Why is that? My GI doc toldme that chronic gastritis is possible to heal completly,in very rare cases and stress is one of the factors in the healing process. So I have been on ppi drugs 6-7 months last year, now with h2 blockers daily, watching my diet, and still i cant say am 100% ok, dont get anyone wrong, i feel a lot better that it started.Does anyone did an endoscopy after ppi treatment, and what were the results?

I wonder what is going on too. I haven't had an endoscopy for a while but I think my stomach would look normal. I feel fine as long as I stick to the diet, but I soon as I start having "normal" food, the pain and excess acid comes back. One meal at the restaurant might be more or less ok if I am careful, two or three in a row, and I am in pain again, not as bad as before but still. I wonder when/if this is going to stop some day.

Same here. I can eat more and more foods now without any problems. But there are some foods still cause me bad symptoms. like yestarday I ate a little smoked meat, and by the evening I got stomach burning sensation. It passed quickly with ranitidine, but still have reaction from some foods. This situation with gastritis symptoms cause depression sometimes.

I can eat as much fat as I want now, I just had af whole avocado on a toast for lunch, and a small amount of cheese, but acidic or spicy things, no. The diet in itself does not bother me much what really bothers me is the social aspect. Dinner parties became complicated, I feel embarassed to ask for a special treatment when we are invited and I don't feel like cooking for guests anymore because I can't make anything special.I don't enjoy going to the restaurant either because I am stressed about the consequences if I eat something I shouldn't and I often get tempted, also I don't enjoy seeing everybody else splurge on good food while I get grilled fish and steamed vegetables. My friends go to desserts cafes, all sorts of places with exotic foods and I must find other occasions to see them. As I result I don't go out much anymore. It is depressing.

If I eat fat, i dont get acid reflux, instead of it the next day I have nausea and I feel realy bad. Thats why I avoid fat. The depressed thing eith me is I cant gain weight sad and social life too. Caffee makes stomach burning and cappuccino too. Diary sometimes I consume but try often to avoid, because i am lactose intolerant. When i must go to visit friends or relatives, i try to avoid bad foods, but when is hard, I go with the flow...if i must drink alcochol i chòse white wine.

Actually I do feel bad too with too much saturated fat (cheese, meat, butter, coconut cream) but somehow I am fine with any amount unsaturated fat (oils, nuts, avocado).

I don't get anywhere near coffee or alcohol, I stick to chamomille tea, water and raw unprocessed coconut water.

I feel the same way about all of it! I want my life back.

We should be able to heal 100%. So I don't understand!
    • Posted

I don't either, maybe it takes longer? Maybe some people stay sensitive forever? I don't know.

I hope we dont stay sensitive forever...I cant even drink chamamile tea. It burns my stomach. And I get cold so easily. I love having a warm drink to sip on in my hands. I right now cant think of one I can have.

Can you sip on hot water instead? Pretend like it's tea.

Sometime I use hot water with a little bit of dried cane sugar juice. Or when I am at a cafe and they don't have chamomille, I ask for a cup of hot water and raw sugar. I am not sure of the ph level of sugar though.

      Hi Ines,

Do you know if the brand "Koh Coconut" for coconut water is okay or not? It's natural and not from concentrate without any additives or other stuff.

I found that most coconut waters have something to conserve them like acid ascorbic (Vit C) or other things which make them acidic. Also personnally I don't like the taste of pasteurized coconut water. Check the ingredients of your coconut water, ideally it should be 100% pure raw coconut water (preferably organic). The brand I use is called harmless harvest, it is raw and unprocessed with no preservatives or additives. They use a very special process to kill bacteria, instead of heating the coconut water (pasteurization), they use some sort of high-pressure, which kills the bacteria while leaving the coconut water.

Fresh coconuts that you open yourself are sometimes available at the store as well. There are some videos on youtube on how to open them. It is easier that one might think.

Koh coconut water is indeed without additives or other stuff so it is probably fine if you like the taste (it is pasteurized). If you can find raw coconut water, it has more vitamins, nutrients, ... not destroyed by the heat, and the taste is infinitely better.
