How I cured my gastritis

Posted , 375 users are following.

When I got diagnosed with mild gastritis (but no H. Pylori) and esophagitis, I looked all over the internet to find what to do. I did not find many accounts of people who have cured themselves successfully and how they did it. So I thought I would write my story once I am cured. Here it is. If you have cured yourself from gastritis too, please share your experience below as well.

Many people ask how long it takes to be cured. At first I started on dexilant for a month but I did not see any improvement. After a month I kept taking dexilant and I started the low acid diet in parallel. I got much better in 2-3 days. After two months on dexilant and one month on the diet, I felt completely good. Then I stopped the dexilant cold turkey and got a lot of pain and acidity back in my stomach. Now I regret I did not take the dexilant a little longer as my stomach was obviously not healed and not strong enough to go through the rebound effect of stopping dexilant. I regret also that I did not stop dexilant slowly taking it every other day for a week, then every three days for a week, .... I felt anxious about taking a medication that has so many side effects taken long term and I wanted to stop immediately, which was not reasonable.

Anyway there I was back at the beginning with stomach pain and acidity day and night. I felt pain related to the esophagitis as well which really scared me. I hesitated to take dexilant again but I decided to try to cure myself the natural way. Below I describe what I did. I got cured in approximately two months, getting slowly better week by week. After two months of natural cures I had no stomach pain anymore and no excess acid, I was able to sleep again, felt like a new healthy (and lighter -- I lost a few pounds) person. However after those two months, I felt that I needed to follow the diet another month for my stomach to get strong and be able to handle a less strict diet.

THE CURE

Books

Most of what I did is summarized in two books which I found very useful:

The first book is "Dropping acid: the reflux diet cookbook & cure" by Jamie Koufman. This is the book I based my diet on. The only disagreements I have with the author regard dairy products that I stopped taking as they make the stomach produce more acid (very clear for me), and the use of ginger, manukka honey and aloe vera which I find too irritating and/or acidic (and I don't feel that they help). Also she does not talk about salt which is known to be irritating for the stomach lining in excess, I felt an improvement when I lowered my intake in salt. I will explain the diet more in details below.

The other book is "Ulcer free! Nature's safe & effective remedy for ulcers" by G. Halpern. I know you may have gastritis and no ulcers but the two conditions are related and what cures one usually cures the other too. I used some of the natural supplements recommended in this book. In particular slippery elm (this one is actually not mentioned in the book) and DGL licorice for stomach pain (coat the interior of the stomach lining), Zinc-Carnosine (reduce inflammation and protects stomach lining - I felt a great improvement after starting to take it especially with acid production at night), and cabbage juice (finished my recovery with this one, after two days I had no stomach pain anymore at night). I describe the supplements more below.

What did not work for me

Mastic gum hurts my stomach. It is supposedly helpful against H. Pylori which I knew I did not have (I had been tested).

Prelief removes the acid in food and stomach very efficiently but causes constipation.

Tums works well for 45 minutes but then there is a rebound effect with the stomach producing more acid.

Manukka honey hurts my stomach (Too acidic, Ph level 4, but maybe also because of the tea tree essential oil in it). It is supposedly helpful against H. Pylori.

Aloe Vera is too acidic (around Ph level 4), and I don't feel it is doing anything positive.

Ginger is irritating and I don't feel it is doing anything positive.

Probiotics helps with digestion but not really for the stomach.

Zantac works very well at removing the acidity but makes me feel dizzy and incredibly tired.

PPI worked very well at removing the acidity and pain in my stomach while I was taking it while doing the diet, but I had a bad rebound effect when I stopped (one must stop slowly by taking it every other day for a while). Also having too low acid in the stomach because of PPI might cause problems in the long term (problems with Calcium and B12 absorption, bacterial infection more likely).

I had hpylori went for endoscapy and biopsies told I had gastritis. Told to stay in ppi until it cleared. I thought it would never go had it for 6 month or so. Slowly getting there I started tacking slippery elm powder 100% sure this is working for me 4 times a day I try and have it. Keep the faith I was at my wits end with it all it takes months to heal I was told

I think acidity is not problem for gastritis sufferers. I'm diagnosed as chronic antral gastritis and feel nauseous specially after eating. I can drink COKE without any prob but I can't handle with any raw food such as fruits or veggies.

Fat causes inflammation. That's totally true. I was feel almost perfect just 2 weeks ago but I ate salmon every damn day since just one week and my gastritis symptoms came back. I feel nauseous again.

    Avoid fatty and raw things.

This is my rule while I'm suffering from gastritis.

Also, PPI's cannot heal you. You are not reflux sufferer. Gastritis is about inflammation of stomach mucosa, not about acidity. This is why PPI drugs dont't work on me.

Glutamin is only useful thing in my opinion.

I agree with you also. I took omeprazole by itself and saw little improvement. When I started taking sucralfate I almost immediately saw and improvement. This is why I'm anxious to try the slippery elm, pepsin Gi and the DGL..

I never tried sucralfate. Can you tell me more about this compound, please?

I avoid fatty & raw things and dairy as much as possible as I said. Mostly white/brown rice, well cooked/soaked legumes, wholewheat bread, maybe little milk kefir, oats and chicken breast.

Sucralfate is used to coat the lining of your stomach and intestines. This acts like a bandaid by protecting the lining/ulcer and helping it to heal quicker. In two more days it will be 5 months since I started taking sucralfate along with omeprazole. My appetite is still good, and I've seen a big improvement. But, I have had to episodes where my stomach wasn't happy. The first episode ended with nausea and the second episode it was more of just discomfort. It seems like progress is coming along week by week. Although its only been five weeks since I've been using sucralfate (started Oct 5th) ive had symptoms since Aug 22nd. So my Doctor made a referral to the GI just to be sure she isn't missing anything. This is the second time I'll be seeing a GI. So far I've had two stool samples, xray, blood, urine tests and an MRI. The GI may order a scope. One last thing, from Aug 22 through Oct 5th I lost 25 lbs, maybe even a few more. After Oct 5th when I started using sucralfate I didn't lose any more weight and started feeling better. I wish you the best and I plan on posting updates here from now on.

Sorry to hear that. I really understand your pain. I also lost 65 lbs in 4-5 months, like a joke isn't it? But at least I gained 50 lbs in last three months.

Low fat diet is the key for healing process. When my fat intake up to high, I win a ticket from nightmareland again.

I see a lot of improvement, but not still good enough.

I asked for sucralfate to my doc and he said that there is no reason to take it for you. But I'll give it a try with strict diet. No fatty fish like salmon long period of time. White rice & chicken and cooked vegetables is the all I need, methinks.

By the way, how about your diet? What's your main symptom?

      Hi skythroat,

I lost 30 lbs in about 6 months with strick diet, now I am trying to gain weight back, feel like it is hard even to gain several lbs, how did you gain 50lbs in three months? Thanks for your input.

65 lbs, WOW that is no joke. I've seen 5 doctors so far and the 5th is the one who prescribed the sucralfate. I was so happy when I started feeling better, I hope you give a try.

My diet is similar to yours I believe. I mainly eat oatmeal, toast, scrambled eggs, white rice, green beans, corn, steamed carrots, potatoes, mashed potatoes, papaya, baked chicken breast, and tilapia. I want to start introducing more fruits and vegetables but I want to wait until I have a really good week.

The symptoms have changed, it used to me nausea that started 30 min to 2 hours after meals and sometimes at night. It was really extreeme, but after I started taking the sucralfate the nausea really tapered off and now its more of a queezy feeling.. but not as intense as before. last week I had 3 days in a row where I felt completly fine, 100% When I look at my food diary I can't see anything that I 'm doing wrong. what a struggle...

Yeah, that was what I guess. You avoid all fruits at all and most of veggies as I understand. I will give you a tip: Everyone is different but never try any fruits, specially grapes and berries. At least till you have troublefree weeks.

You'll be ok soon. Just keep strict diet. I was very good till night. I ate 500 gr yogurt and it throwed me into hell. I'm still not good enough. Fat/dairy still is not tolerable like almost all fruits.

About sucralfate, that really gives a hope to me. I definitely give it a try.

      Thank you.

      @eric,

I prefer high-kcal foods. Rice and very well soaked/cooked legumes were my main bulk foods. I also eat about 200 gr oats in the morning. I also eat wholewheat breads, (not wholegrain) eggs, goat cheese and milk kefir. I eat almost 5k kcal per a day.

Just avoid all raw and fatty things. This is the most important rule while suffering gastritis. It prevents healing process.

Everybody says to eat apples and bannanas, but I couldn't tolerate them. The only fruit that seemed somewhat tolerable has been papaya and blueberries. Yogurt also pulled a number on me also, no fun. Thank you for the encouraging words. I do have a question for you though, why kind of oats do you eat and how is it prepared?
    • Posted

      I use rolled oats.

Overnight oat is absolutely better for digestive system. This is why I prefer it. If I feel good, I mix just 2-3 tablespoon of yogurt, little bit water and raspberry (it seems the only fruit that I tolerate) and put it in refrigerator. Next morning, I eat it with milk kefir.

My stomach is sensitive nowadays due to 500 gr yogurt party night. I ate it in this morning and had slightly nausea unfortunately. If your days are not good enough, I don't recommend it. Wholewheat bread and tonz of egg whites breakfast was my life saver when I feel really bad.

You know how to struggle with gastritis. Acidity/alkaline is bull in my experience. Just drink water, that's enough. I tried EVERYTHING. Just avoid fatty & raw things and red meat even if it's lean. If you have good week, then you can try some dairy if you wish.

You'll heal soon. I recommend glutamin to everyone who suffers from gastritis. It also boosts immunity.

Thank you for the wonderful tips. I'm learning how important diet is as time goes on. I'm so thankful for sites like this one.

I'm also wondering that. Did you try well soaked/cooked chickpea/lentils with brown rice, Chris? If your answer is yes, please let me know how did you feel after you finish that meal?
    • Posted

I haven't tried the lentils yet, but I'm going to try and pick some up at the grocery store today. I have been eating rice and beans with very little meat, fish or chicken breast. Not having a good day so far, but I was given a refferal to the GI so hopefully I'll get in there this week. This is a nightmare.. I'll let you how I feel after trying the lentils smile

I just bought sucralfate. How do you use it? Can you explain me, please? Should I take omeprazole with sucralfate?

And what was your diagnosis exactly? Mine was hemorrhagic chronic antral gastritis.

    • Posted

Enter text...My diagnosis was gastritis, and I saw another doctor who diagnosed me with dyspepsia.

First I will tell you what the instructions on the bottle say.

      1. Take medication on an empty stomach one hour before or two to three hours after a meal unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

      2. Take this medication at least 1 hour before or 1 hour after magnesium or aluminum containing antacids, iron, or vitamins/minerals.

      3. It is very important that you take or use this exactly as directed. Do not skip doses or discontinue unless directed by your doctor.

I take Sucralfate 1 gram tablets 4 times a day. As noted above in #2 you can't take sucralfate at the same time as omeprazole.

So this is how I take both medicines.

      6:30 am I take sucralfate

      7:30 am Omeprazole

      8:00 am Breakfast

      11:00 am sucralfate

      12:00 pm Lunch

      3:45 pm sucralfate

      4:45 pm omeprazole

      5:15 dinner

      8pm or 9pm sucralfate

There is a stronger dose where sucralfate is taken only twice day. And there is also liquid sucralfate. I've found these pills to be kind of big but they disolve quickly. So, what I do is get a mouth full of water and take the pill but let it sit for about 5 seconds and the pill disolves and goes down like water.

I still did not start to take sucralfate. I was feeling so good and thought there is no need of it at least for now. But had a bad night yesterday. Extreme nausea as you guess. I have no any other symptoms as I said.

I really read many readings about sucralfate on pubmed and that drug seems very effective for gastritis and ulcer. It's cytoprotective and it has anti-oxidant properties for gastric mucosa.

Combining of bland diet and sucralfate should work if I'm not wrong. And it seems it works you have not nausea symptom after you take this mecidine, right?

I just logged in to check and see how you were doing and then noticed that you replied. Anyhow, I've been taking the sucralfate for 6 weeks. I've had two flare ups but no nausea. And, the most recent flare up was less intense than the the first. Besides having a cold, I've been 100% for 6 days straight. My Doctor told me when I have a normal week I could cut back the sucralfate to 3x day instead of 4x.

I was referred to a GI a week ago and he reassured me there was no cancer or ulcers, based on all the tests I've done so far.he said keep taking the omepeazole 2x day and the sucralfate 4x day. I'm going to keep taking the normal doses and if I'm still good in 2 weeks I'll cut back the sucralfate to 3x day. My normal doctor also said to take the omeprazole 2x day for 8 weeks and then 1x day for 4 weeks. Then switch to Zantac ( I believe) and then wean off that and be med free.

I started liquid sucralfate yesterday. Hoping that it will make difference. I don't take any PPI cause it seems those drugs don't work on me. I'm using x4 sucralfate a hour before meals and before bed.

Your sounds great. I'm happy to hear that you have no nausea after taking sucralfate. I have only nausea after meals as I said, unfortunately. I was good yesterday. But not good enough today, feel slightly nausea. It started after my chicken and rice meal. I really don't know what I'm doing wrong.

I checked my log to see when I started feeling better and it was about 2-3 days after started the sucralfate/omeprazole. Few weeks later I had an episode and the last day of the episode I had very slight nausea for about 2 hrs, but nothing like before. The second episode I had stomach discomfort but absolutely no nausea. I saw improvement week by week.

I'm starting to think the omeprazole may have helped. After speaking with different doctors I was told that omeprazole starts working after 2 weeks and the full effects kick in at 6 weeks.

I dont think I mentioned it in my last post, but when i saw the GI last week he prescribed Nortriptyline 10mg even though I was feeling good. I've been desperate this whole time to feel better, so I said why not and started taking it even though I was feeling fine. The GI said after a couple weeks ill just realize that feel better, but wont know exactly what day it happened. So right now I don't know if the nortriptyline is helping or not but I don't care because I've been feeling 100%. This GI is supposed to be one if the best in the business so I'm just going to continue following his instruction.

I felt the same way as you. Nothing seemed to be working. I kept going back to the hospital and saw difft doctors. I have Kaiser so I have the option to see a difft doctor for my Appt. I wanted a 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th opinion. I've seen at least 6 different doctors up until this point. Something else you can consider is that the food might not be the problem. I've been keeping a detailed food journal and it appears that I was OK eating a certain food one day but not the next. So this only made me more confused and frustrated.

I'm eating mostly rice, chicken, Fish, corn, eggs and toast or bread with peanut butter. Everything seems to be working but I still don't think I'm out the woods yet.

I've seen at 4 different doctors, some of them are GI professors and they always say me that your ok, your gastritis is not much thing, it's psychological.

I don't know. I feel nauseous since 9 months. Specially after eating. I've used nexium for at least 3 months but it really didn't help me. This is why I keep saying that these drugs don't work on me.

I really have very good times two weeks ago. I didn't eat any kind of meat in that period, I was eating mostly brown rice, legume, bread, goat cheese, sometimes kefir, eggs. I throwed salmon to my diet and nightmare came as I said before.

I gonna go for lacto-ovo vegetarian way. It seems it's safe way for me to get out from this hell.

I will take omeprazole x2 a day as you do, then. Maybe it works for me. Our symptoms are same.

Thanks for your recommendations, chris. I very thank you.
