How likely I've contracted herpes?

Worried about herpes...

I had unprotected oral sex with a new partner (partner 1) on 10th June, had no symptoms of any infection.

I had unprotected oral sex and inserted the penis into vagina of another new partner (partner 2) on 17th June, few days later I developed a sore throats with swollen glands to the point I was struggling to swallow, this subsided but didn't finally go for a few weeks, I did visit the doctors the week after and he said there was a lot of mucus on the throat but said to see how it goes.

Then on the 30th June I had protected sex with partner 1, at the time she had a cold sore so we only had sex and no oral or kissing, however we touched hands etc. A couple of days after this encounter I developed an itch in the anus and pubic hair, the anus got quite red and was sore when wiping but I thought this was just down to poor hygiene as I've had similar before, without the pubic itching, I did look and there were no obvious signs of blisters, there was a bit of blood at one point after wiping.

The sore anus has passed but the itchiness of the pubic area and anus, sometimes small burning sensation is still present which is now over 20 days. The itching comes and goes and isn't constant, there are no obvious blisters, or rash. I have also developed burning lips but this may just be down to them drying out and cracking a little, over the last couple weeks but there have been no cold sores.

I've visited the GUM and GP, had tests for chlamydia/gonorrhoea/syphillis/HIV for tests after 28 days all coming back negative. When mentioning herpes testing they just shrugged me off saying these aren't typical symptoms of herpes, so now I'm stuck and I've started a previous discussion on blood tests as that seems the only option.

Doesn't sound like you have it, tbh. No offence, but it seems like you're grasping to find symptoms, so anxiety is driving your fears rather than anything concrete. A first outbreak of primary herpes infection would have occurred by now if you have it, and that would involve lesions.

Itching, tingling and all that by itself is not indicative of herpes. Did you know that even half of those with symptomatic herpes don't experience any of that? So many people equate itching and tingling with herpes, when it's not a given.

Personally, I don't think you have anything to worry about and that your clinic is right, but if you insist, do the IgG test privately via regular blood draw, not finger prick (as per your other post), as that is less common, so harder to say how reliable that is.

The itching/burning is still present around the genitals/anus 2 months since although it is slightly better, is it common for symptoms to last this long? As it affects the nerves could it remain there longer than, a couple of weeks? All other std checks coming back negative so struggling to understand.

I had a IGG blood test but it was done at 5 1/2 weeks post first encounter with partner 1, 4 weeks after 2nd partner so was too soon, this did come back as negative for both but not sure on the reliability of those being so early. I am scheduled for another this week which would be 11 weeks since partner1 and 9 weeks since partner 2.

With regards to the lip tingling/burning, does it always result in lesions? I had several small cuts during this time?

Is it possible to get herpes orally and genitally during the same encounter?

      Thanks

Yes, it's possible to infect both sites during the same encounter, but no, it's not common or typical for tingling to persist that long. As for the rest, I would wait for your next IgG test results. I'm pretty sure it will still be negative, and if little numeric change from your previous test, even better.

      Thankyou for being so helpful!

I plan to do the test this week and await the results. How accurate can I expect the results to be after the timescales mentioned?

With herpes is it common for multiple areas to be itchy/burn or does it tend to stick to an area? I don't know a lot about the virus.

Also, do sores or areas appear where contact was made with a direct sore for example or can they be random across the gebitals? I.e. If I had anus issues would that be possible when there was no contact with that area?

      Thanks

Very accurate at 11 weeks and pretty accurate at 9 weeks. A first outbreak will occur where the virus entered the body. Only subsequent outbreaks may potentially migrate, but even those tend to stay close to the original site. Sensations at multiple sites is not typical.

      Blood tests

      9th Aug:

       HSV1 - 0.0706 / HSV - <0.500

      5th Sept:

      HSV1 - 0.108 / HSV - <0.500

There is a slight change in the HSV1 index value, however no index value for HSV2 was given just under 0.500, is a slight change expected?

      Thanks

I am confused by your results. Were you only tested for HSV1 IgG? Such a slight change over a month is not significant, so you are still negative for HSV1.

No it is a type specific, the only one I can find in the UK, not sure of the name of the test.

It gave values separately, sorry the above post I missed HSV2 is less than 0.500, they don't give a value for HSV2 just that it's below 0.500.

When is considered conclusive for blood results? I want to try and confirm so I can move on to investigating what else this could be.

3 months for IgG is adequate, and 4 months if you want to be extra conservative (but not really necessary).

I will get retested after 12 weeks then as the latest bloods were 9 weeks since symptoms of tingling, itching and burning. I'm still struggling to move on as being negative for all other STI tests leaves me wondering what this could be and with the symptoms occurring a couple days after sex with a known HSV1 carrier I'm finding it hard.

If I experience tingling, itching, burning at a specific site would you expect a lesion to appear? Or is this not guaranteed?

Thankyou so much for your help.

My concern is the partner with confirmed herpes infection (cold sores) unsure whether any genital herpes is present with her. I have never had any issues in the genital region, and I had been in a 5 year relationship prior to this with no issues so this is something new.

These issues started a couple of days after sex with the concerned partner, tingling, itching and burning in the anus area was intense and was present in the pubic area region, no issues with the penis as this was protected with a condom. I inspected the anus everyday as it was sore and tingling but I never seen any obvious blisters but it is hard to see. I mentioned my scrotum in a comment above was burning but I now think this was down to the clotzrizamole I applied as it made my scrotum red so need to disregard this as a symptom. the symptoms over the past couple of days have died down but are still present, which is 8/9 weeks since exposure, which I know doesn't seem to fit with herpes but could it?

I'm just really struggling to understand what else this could be, because it was an onset from that night and I've tested negative for everything else, the GUM clinic really didn't have any idea saying it could be herpes.

If lips tingle and burn I know this is a sign of oral herpes, I had that for a week or so but no obvious sores just cuts, and small white spots that looked like fordyce spots.

As you say it's hard when you don't understand the virus but the anus issues cause me concern as the symptoms list does contain many of what I've experience. There was no contact with the anal area, and the GUM clinic said that it would be strange to experience it there if there was no contact, how accurate is this statement? The issues around the pubic area like tingling, burning we're in the same specific places but no lesions developed.

I want to continue living a normal sex life but I'm scared to meet new people at the minute why this hangs over me, and it's really getting to me at the minute.

I don't believe it's herpes, just going by your IgG results alone. You're negative for both types and the odds of you being a late seroconverter are low. You have also had nothing to swab, as there's been no outbreak to speak of.

The symptoms are only just starting to fade a little, I.e. Itching and burning have lessened, again which has got me thinking this is a sign of herpes as other issues probably wouldn't go without treatment.

With my symptoms only just fading is this a sign that antibodies are only just starting to be produced? Hence not showing in bloods yet?

      Cheers

      19th Sept:

      HSV1 - 0.148 / HSV2 - <0.500

I've had another blood test this was done around 10 weeks since last exposure, 13 weeks since firsts, again the value for HSV1 had raised, should I expect that during the 12-16 week period this will continue to rise to a positive?

If you were infected, the increase would be much more than that. Looks like typical fluctuations, nothing to worry about.

Thanks, that's ok for the HSV1 but HSV2 can't see if any fluctuation just that's it's still below <0.500. Negative at 10 weeks is a good sign? Even though symptoms persist? Thanks

Yep, that is a good sign. Your symptoms are clearly due to something else.

Hello, the two partners have had blood tests:

      Partner 1

      HSV1: 36.3

      HSV2: <0.5

      Partner 2:

      HSV1: 28.2

      HSV2: <0.5

So it turns out they both have HSV1, partner 1 was already aware but partner 2 wasn't aware she did have it, So there is a chance it was passed on from either encounter if I did have it, is there any significance in the values?

I will repeat my own blood test 12 weeks post it all to try and confirm.

I wouldn't worry about it. Many people carry HSV1 and usually not at infectious levels. If you're going to worry that much, you really shouldn't kiss anyone or let them touch you! Your tests to date indicate no infection and they're pretty damned good at 10 weeks.
