How long after pre-op assessment is my surgery likely to be?

Hi all

I have my pre-op booked for 30th March and the letter says provided I pass the pre-op I will be given a date for the actual surgery.  Just wondering how long after the pre-op this date tends to be.  I'm in Cornwall, U.K..

Thanks

Paula

Hello Paula, I live in Dorset and for me it was 10 days after pre-op assesment. Are you also booked to see the physiotherapist on the same day as the assesment?

      Hi Arthur

I don't think so.  The letter just says to bring in all the measurements for my furniture at home, wc, bed, chair etc.

I did ring and ask how long the appointment will last and they said about an hour and a half.

What do they actually do at the pre-op?

      Thanks

      Paula

Hi Paula, sounds like you may see the physio - are you having this done at a NHS hospital or private (paid for under NHS) I had my THR done at a BMI hospital in Dorchester, had the assesment then was sent to the physio dept to have a chat with physiotherapist regarding what was needed at home and they looked at the form I filled in regarding chair, bed & toilet seat height.

Hi Paula, sorry my previous text was not answereing your question and for the lenght of this one. At pre-op I had the following done - bloods taken, weight, height, water sample, ECG - BP & Sats. Then the pre-op nurse filled a many page document regarding you and q & a about the op - will need a list of ALL medication currently been taken (I gave them a short printout of what and when which was then attached to the form - only have a couple of items). Once done was then passed over to the physio dept for assesment on how I walked then and the lady did a quick maniplation of my right leg (right THR op)to asess movement before op and discuss after-care. As this was a private hospital they also offeredme  hydrotherapy as a paid for service which I took. Then 10days later into hospital lunch-time wed, op same day at 5:30pm - home on the saturday

Any other questions please contact me

      Regards Arthur

ps I have never regretted having mine - no pain walking (7mths)

In the U.S., we schedule the surgery and then schedule the pre-op 1-2 weeks prior to the surgery.

So it's the other way round there, makes sense!  Thanks

Yes.  The hospital doesn't want the pre-op to take place more than 2-3 weeks prior to the surgery.  For instance, if you have an infection (UTI, sinus, etc.) that would need to be cleared up prior to the surgery.  So we need to know what the surgeon's schedule is before the pre-op can be scheduled.

Hi Paula. I already had my date before pre op assessment. It was a couple of weeks before. I also attended a 'joint' school meeting run by a physio who went through everything , what to expect, what to bring in and loads more info. Really helpful. At the pre op assessment the nurse took bloods, swabs, urine, blood pressure and ECG. She also went through everything again. I had my op at North Downs, Surrey whichbs a private hospital but I was under the NHS.  Doing really well, having staples out today!

good luck with your op, it really is life changing xxx

    Hi Paula

I think it depends on how long the waiting list is at your hospital. I had my thr last year in Sheffield, South Yorks. The waiting list was 3 - 4 weeks and they gave me a date at the end of my pre-op appointment. Good Luck.

Hallo Paula.  I do hope you get your operation soon.  I too live in Cornwall and went for pre-op on 8 February followed by delivery of crutches and other items on 21 February and still waiting fro a date.  The good news is that I know of other people who went for pre-op assessment since then and have ops arranged within 6 weeks.  The difference I think is I need two knees done (one at a time) whereas other people only need one done.  I have now been told that I can't go on the waiting list for at least a year!

      Good evening.

I hope someone is able to help with my inquiry. I am also a Cornwall based resident (down in Penzance) and, after 3 years of pain-killing injections in my shoulder, countless X-rays and countless, pointless physio sessions, i was finally given a scan on the injured shoulder & it turns out I've actually got a completely torn shoulder, along with the bone in the upper arm trying to slip underneath the bone in the shoulder each time I attempt to raise my arm. I have already been told i WILL HAVE TO have an operation because the shoulder & arm will never heal.

Today (Friday 3rd November) I got a call from the referral team, informing me that my pre-op appointment will be on Monday 27th November. So I'm wondering if anyone perhaps has a rough idea as to how long afterwards I'll have to wait to have the operation. For work I'm a courier, so obviously need my left arm to change gear & use the handbrake etc, which is both unbelievably painful & pretty dangerous at the same time. But who can afford to not work these days? :-/..

I'm desperate to get this issue sorted, I've been told that it could easily be 4-6 months of healing after the op, but possibly even longer of they have to do as much work as the scan has indicated. I'm hoping that, because of the length of time I've been in pain, along with the severity of the actual injury, I'll be sorted pretty quickly after my appointment on the 27th, but the guys at work think it's extremely unlikely I'll get seen to before Christmas.

So, if anyone is able to ease my concerns, I'd be extremely grateful.

Thank you for taking the time to read my novel length post.

      Stuart (Coopsie)
