How long after starting antibiotics for painful urination should I see results? (UTI)

Posted , 6 users are following.

As prescribed by my GP I started yesterday on a course of Nitrofurantoin antibiotic (100 mg twice a day - have taken three so far) to address painful urination which started 4 days ago. Still painful. Feeling no improvement yet.

When should I see results? Thank you.

    Jeremy,

Did you get a urine test first to make sure you actually have a UTI? If you have an infection you should notice improvement fairly quickly. If you don't notice anything getting better by tomorrow then I would get back to the doctor and let him know what's going on. We aren't really able to help you much here.

My doctor always tells me 2-3 days before seeing results. Keep in mind even as the bacteria is killed off by the antibiotic there is still inflammation and irritation that has to resolve. Take probiotics as well to prevent upset stomach from the antibiotics. Also, if they took a urine sample and sent it out to the lab for a culture, depending on what (if any) bacteria grows they might change the antibiotic. On some occasions , even when I am sure that I have a UTI nothing grows in the lab but they keep me on the antibiotics anyway.

    Good luck.

My experience is it took something like 3 days with Nitrofurantoin until I felt improvement. Bactrim worked faster for me until I found I had an allergy to Sulfa. Maybe it depends how bad the infection is. Probably you should drink a lot to flush it out.

Thank you so much all for clarifying the situation for me.

No, urine test wasn't done I will definitely go back to my GP if things don't get better by tomorrow (day 3).

      Hi

Just wanted to let you know how my problem was finally (and successfully) resolved.

Started with the antibiotic amoxcillicin 125 three times a day. After three days no improvement. My GP then changed it to another antibiotic, Nitrofurantoin 100mg twice a day for 7 days. It worked!

Thank you all again for your insights.

I experienced painful urination unrelated to n infection. I found a drug called URAL (that come in a sachet) when mixed with a glass of water and drunk provides near instant relief. No pain on urination. It is an alkaline power that when consumed reduces the levels of acid in the urine.

    Just my $0.02
