How long before I don't have to use my hands to help lift my leg up to elevate it or get into bed?

Hi, I'm brand new here and had a THR on July 26.  I had an anterior ceramic cementless.  Am doing PT in my home 3X a week and just started using a cane today.  I think I'm doing ok but I really didn't understand how major this is.  I feel semi human when up and walking but sitting and lifing my leg to elevate it or get into bed is disillusioning.  Just started PT exercise of sitting on the edge of the bed and trying to lift my leg......it's so weak.  Think I need some encouragement other than my husband who is very supportive and thinks every step I take is great.

Thx so much,

wlee

Hi there. I am 10 days post op, I have only starting getting in and out of bed with no assistance I am still using my arms. I still need someone to put my leg on a pillow a night. Sadly I will probably been using my arm for a while as ' my good leg' needs replace once I recover from my right hip replacement. You will get there it just takes time

Wish you all the best for your recovery!

The middle of the night when I wake up at 3 or 4 is the hardest time for me. That's when everything hurts the most and is the stiffest. My husband wakes up and gets me ice and I take something for pain and of course hobble off to the bathroom. I can get in and out of bed by myself but it definitely bothers my arthritic shoulder which I was exercising better before the surgery. Everyday really is getting better though but I'm worried because I'm supposed to go back to work in 2 weeks. Thanks for your supportive words.

Hi there. Last night was the first night I slept the whole night since having my op, I was so sniff trying to get out the bed and a bit sore but as soon and I take my painkillers I was fine. sorry to here that it's sore and sniff!. At this moment I am not aloud to use ice as my right leg( the one I got the new hip) is freezing compared to my left ( which I am

Getting replace soon). So they said I can out heat packs on them and it seems to help a tad so far. I ended back in Hospital because of the swollen of my leg.

Just take each day as it comes, it will take a while but each day you will get stronger!

Can't you get more time for work or?

      Hope your well

      Megan xx

I can but I teach HS and it's really hard to come in after a week or two of substitutes and gain control of the classes. I can make it easy for myself but not if I have to keep putting my leg up.

Hi wlee / thank you for what you do, teaching at high school level very commendable/ I'm @ day 8 from THR SURGERY/ not as quick a recovery as I had hoped for / did both knees 2014 (June, Sept) went well so I thought I was an old pro. Not really ! this surgery is different / more pain and recovery seems slower. I can tell you physical therapy is everything, you will get back and even be better. I did it 3 days a week for a year and a half. My knees were really bad before , different situation, but I do know how you will continue to gain strength. Just have faith and work at it, you will get there. Dave 63380

Don't get discouraged. I was completely active, too, prior to needing a hip replacement and couldn't believe how dead my leg felt needing to have my leg manually manipulated after surgery to get in and out if bed.

It's completely normal and little my little the strength will come back and there's no norm as to when. It happens for everyone at different points. Be patient. You will heal and the strength in your leg will come back.

Thanks for your kind words. It is how active I was before that's really hard not to wonder how long before I get back. I know I'm not super girl but I guess I secretly wished I'd be 'slightly' super??

Hi there! I had my HRT on July 27th, so we are basically on the same boat GF!! My hubby too has been amazing and helpful. We are truly blessed! He had to help me lift my leg for the first 2-3 days and then on my 4th day home he was going to help and low and behold that sucker just went right up !! Lol! This surgery is harder to recover from than I had been told. I just keep doing my PT faithfully 3X's a day , rest with leg elevated a lot and take it one day at a time. I wish you continued healing sweetie.

Hi I had a right thr on 27 July. I started yesterday being able to lift my leg onto the bed without helping it. I think it may depend on the height of your bed. It's my staples which are causing me problems but having them removed on Monday. Hope this helps
