How long did it take to diagnose?

Hi all. My name is Melissa and I've been through severe ongoing trauma for the last 5.5 years and it is still happening. Sometimes I feel very panicky, crying, frightened (for good reason, flask backs etc. My pain specialist feels I have symptoms of PTSD, but after only 2, 1 hour sessions with a psychiatrist, I've been told I do not have PTSD. There is so much the psychiatrist  does not know. How long did it take for other people to be diagnosed and what did the drs do to diagnose it? I feel it has been dismissed too easily and too fast. Thanks all. Melissa

Ooh Melissa, how can the psychiatrist know if you have ptsd or not? It depends what symptoms you display, I have a very firm diagnosis of ptsd but it took 8/10 sessions of help to convince anyone just how scared I was. The new counsellor I see is a ptsd specialist she told me I definitely have ptsd as I tick boxes for it. I was blunt and asked! I think after the last 2 sessions I've had she's had the confirmation I have ptsd. The flashbacks have been horrendous. If you are on the Internet then search ptsd and look for the symptoms. You'll know if you have ptsd. Good luck it's shxx to live with, process and get help with.

Hello Melissa, I have recently been identified as having something called 'complex interpersonal trauma'. I believe another name for it is cPTSD (complex PTSD) which is caused by long term abuse from a close relationship(s). In my case the abuse is emotional/mental. And 'funnily' enough I have a pain condition too - brought on no doubt by years of emotional stress. Please google this condition and go back to your psychiatrist, or ask to see another one. I absolutely believe you.

    Hi Melissa

?I would think that to base the decision on 1 persons opinion would be unwise. It is always good to get more than 1 opinion. Maybe you can talk to someone else??? To be honest, I would think that most important is that that instead of the importance being to give a specific name to your symptoms is that they are able to correctly treat whatever it is you have to enable you to experience less suffering. Did the psychiatrist continue to treat you? or did they sign you off because you didn't have PTSD?
