How long do other people's diverticulitis attacks last? Just read someone on soft diet x 2months?!

Posted , 153 users are following.

I'd love to know how long other people's flare-ups last on average. Have had D disease x 15 y. Had 3 attacks in past 6 wks. Urgh! I usually take antis & get up after 1 or 2 days, liquids only x 36hrs then soft foods x about a week, then gradually reintro fibre, seeds, pulses. Maybe I should stay on soft food more than a few days after 36h on liquids?? Opinions please! And btw its almost impossible to lose weight when this rotten condition dictates eating all the wrong stuff after an attack.. White flour pasta, mash..all those carbs! And stodge! Not helpful. Any ideas? Thanks. New to forum. Am 63 now & desperate to do anything to avoid surgery. Hi to all fellow-sufferers..this thing is a so 'n so & invades at the drop of a hat. Oh..and...

If anyone has ideas about how to address core strength safely please...do tell. Caz

I can't thank you enough for these postings! I didn't expect the CT diagnosed diverticulitis to last this long. 3 weeks, antibiotics the past 10 days and still in pain. Going back to clear liquids and Miralax, heating pad on and off. Nasty disease but thankfully not cancer.

Unfortunately 3 weeks is not enough time to cure Diverticulitis...you need time and patience...at least 3 months of taking care of your diet, and when it's cured you should have a healthy diet to ovoid a new attack.

My first and only attack lasted about 5 weeks then another 2 by the time I felt like myself. Patience is needed, lots of water and rest. Liquid diet for a few days, then low fiber for a couple of weeks and gradually work back into your normal diet. My doctor told me there are no restrictions on my diet. My Attack was in January and I have been fine  since then. Hope you will be also.

I have had more than I can account flare ups if diverticulitis. The best I can tell you is that it takes time to heal.

My last attack took 3 months before I felt myself.  I was admitted to hospital and given IV antibiotics and some to take home for another week.

I avoid seeds, nuts and skins. Yesterday I took a chance and ate cherries. The skin is too hard to digest and while I answer your message I am laying with a heating pad on my abdomen because I started getting discomfort later today.  I will be on a light soft diet for a few days hoping it will pass. If not back to the doctor I will go for antibiotics. My last attack was in February 2017. It seems I get one of these twice a year. Hope this helps.

Hello all... first time blogger for anything.... I was diagnosed three days ago via CT that I have D and a small abscess.  Was out on flygl and Icpro. Today is day three....I still have diarrhea and slight cramping... doctor said I can have the abscess drained but I'm scared!!!! Has anyone had this procedure done and what exactly happens?

My other biggest fear is that I leave for Greece in 5 weeks... husband surprised me with a 60th bday present.

im scared that I may not be able to go due to D and afraid if I do go... another episode will happen there.

im very depressed..... im a runner... in good shape .... and this is devastating to me.

    anyone out there like me?

Man, I feel you. Just diagnosed 7.15.17, perforated bowel and diverticulitis. 6 days in hospital. 5 days massive IV antibiotics, no food or drink to avoid surgery. Still afraid to eat. Liquid diet mostly. Just started soft foods, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, canned peaches. Today seems the colon is trying to do its thing. Lots of cramping. This sure takes time to recover from.

That's the way it is...I spent 12 days at the hospital with IV antiobitcs and after 4 Months at home I'm still recuperating from my severe Diverticulitis...It's a matter of patience and a healthy diet. Metamucil once a day is helping me a lot in the last few days.

Mred1945:  Last year, I had to go to the ER and then admitted to the hospital for one week (IV and liquid diet) - with severe diverticulitis.  Then sent home and had a PICC line for antibiotics for one week - after removing the PICC I was on oral antibiotics for about 2 months.  It tooks months before I was feeling  really good.  I have been doing ok for about 16 months.  While I was in the hospital, the doctor and surgeon wanted to do surgery immediately.   Being my first time having diverticulitis,  I wanted to wait and see if I could recover from this.   I have been ok since changing my diet.  Happy at this time I did not go with the surgery - I still worry every day - never know what the future brings.

I was just diagnosed in Feb 2018, antibiotics at home, liquid diet, lost a lot of weight and nausea all the time, very weak and anxiety very bad So on Adivan, went to ER and CT showed small abcess so admitted to hospital on IV antibiotics, liquids for 4days sent home on antibiotics and low fiber soft diet. I’m now on probiotics and I drink lots of water teas and apple cider vinegar, Still afraid to eat so I stick with mashed potatoes, beef bone broth, soup and crackers and pancakes.   I’m still not better, I get a lot of discomfort and pain on left side under rib area and lower back. This is a icky sickness. I’m so over feeling this way. And it causes me bad anxiety and panic attacks.

Hi, i am new here and I am very interested in this question "How long do other people's diverticulitis attacks last"? Here is my story so far:

I am on my 7th week of attack and 6th week of infection and my 5th script (soon to be 6th) of antibiotics (moxiclav duo forte 875/125).

I was diagnosed last year 30 years old after i had a flare up, I went for a colonoscopy and diverticulitis was found. Since then i had 2 small flare ups (3-4 days) and one massive one (current) that i cannot seem to shake. During this last attack (early stages) i went to the doctor and got some antibiotics and provided some blood and stood tests. These came back with stool infection. I took the remaining antibiotics and had another colonoscopy the week after (did the whole prep and low fibre clear fluid thing that everyone does). Operation revealed that the diverticulitis had spread, they took some biopsies and said see you in another 5 years (wtf). Biopsies showed i still have an infection and that i need to treat it. Back to the doctors for a 2nd course of antibiotics and a repeat script just in case. I then went on a clear fluid diet (mostly water and clear soups / stocks and protein shakes for about 3.5 days while taking the antibiotics. I then got the third script filled as i hadn’t improved yet and was really bloody hungry by then. So i went on soft food / low fibre diet of mostly soup, noddles, plan chicken of fish, some white bread and juices. I have been doing this 2 weeks and now into the start of my 3rd. I’ve been back to the doctors and got 2 more repeat scripts (about to finish my 5th and go onto my 6th) i have noticed over the last 2 days the pain getting worse rather than better. I am back on clear fluid, water, juice and soups. I also take daily probiotic and multi vitamins.

From a symptoms perspective, i have the standard pain that everyone would be familiar with, mine is top left (rather than the common bottom left), the pain radiates into my back and it feels like i have kidney pain constantly. I also get small fevers (only lately) and left testicular pain (dull throb) constantly. I have been mostly having loose stools and mild diarrhea with the occasional blood in the stool (fresh bright red). During the last 3 weeks i also got some kind of UTI that only lasted 3 days, i read that might be associated with the constant infection in the gut e.g. travelling into the blood stream and out through the liver and kidneys (thus into my urine).

I am so over this s**t (pun intended) and need some ideas. 6 weeks seems like way too long and it doesn’t feel like the antibiotics are doing anything at all. The only time I start to feel better is when I don’t eat food and I can only sustain that for 3-4 days.

After this length of time. I think seeing another doctor is a must. Do you live in UK? In America I believe it would have been handled differently. Seek other Gastro doctors. You have suffered too long. Good luck.

I would suggest seeing another doctor, your flearup seems to long.

My suggestion is to not eat anything that has been processed, find bread that is all natural. Nothing from a package that has all this weird ingredients, there is something causing inflammation in you bowls and there for not getting better. Try to eat as natural as you can, vegetables, fruit, no seeds and peeled . Avoid meats since they take to much in time to go through your system. No dairy, my diverticulitis was cause by ice cream.  Then I drink a lot of cranberry juice mixed with pineapple and I add GSE (Grapefruit seed extract) dose is 8 drops and I put 25 that helps to kill the infection I just had a flare up 2 5 days ago and it lasted a week. On top of that I peel small garlic cloves and drink it like you would a pill whole that helps killing infection. Look for food that will help you fight the infection. Hope you get better soon!

I have to agree that it is time to see a different GI or surgeon especially because of the fever despite 3 courses of antibiotics. Sounds like you have been doing everything possible on your end. Abscess or fistula formation would be a concern.

      Hi Antonioldaho!

I really like all your natural remedies!  Thank you so much for sharing them!  I also have given up dairy, and all meat as well as sugar.  Very sad face......It is true, our food is our medicine!

I am wondering if you get garlic breath BAD from the whole garlic?  I know it is a healer!

      Take care!

My pain and discomfort is also upper left side under ribs and back, I had abcess with my diverticulitis but the CT scans X-rays and blood work says I’ve pretty much healed after 3 rounds of antibiotics, but I sure don’t feel like I have. I have developed real bad anxiety and panic attacks due to this and am on Adivan, I have lost a lot of weight am still weak and sick. I’m afraid to eat so I just drink a lot of water and teas, apple cider vinegar probiotics and only eat mashed potatoes, soup crackers pancakes. I’ve investigated on line and there’s so many diff opinions on what to do or not to do. I’m scared and so tired of this.
